I'd echo that sentiment. While there will be a substantial amount of turnover once again (particularly on offense), the classes of '18 and '19 have some talented guys ready to step in. We got a little taste of Dzuro and Castleberry late in the season, and those two should combine for a formidable offensive backfield. Freeman became a pretty reliable target in the playoffs, and Kent will be making his varsity debut after proving to be a pretty dynamic receiver at the JV level. Defense brings back Fattah, Shields and Dowell. How quickly the 2017 Eagles come together may depend on how the lines shake out. Expectations should be tempered early on, but the talent is there to make a deep run.

I keep seeing the week 1 game with Pine Richland here listed for Saturday 8/26. Is that 100% confirmed that it is Saturday vs. Friday 8/25? Typically the WPIAL games are Friday.

Really?

Wasn't St.Ed's ranked #1 in the region at the beginning of the year? As for talent...St. Ed's had plenty. They definitely had less than 2015 St. Ed's which I think is confusing you a bit.

I'd disagree with the talent discrepancy last year as well. No team on the schedule last year was head and shoulders above St. Eds. Hoban probably had the most marquee talent of any team we played, and we beat them. Moeller had comparable talent to us, probably more D1 guys, and we beat them. Elder out-schemed the hell out of us, but did not have a talent advantage. Ignatius was certainly more talented in the trenches, as well as at QB (although the QB play for both teams this year was down), but things were pretty even everywhere else. Every other team we were clearly more talented than. Some teams had a few big time buys (that QB from Pine Richland for example), but we were better overall.

Want to pick one of those and go with it or would you prefer to argue both sides?

Very interesting.

Cathedral has a national-caliber level rugby team as well and has played the Eagles a number of times, though less-so after Cathedral moved away from the single-school bracket and into the multi-school bracket (they allow Bishop Chatard students to play) at Midwest and Nationals. Last year, they took second at nationals in their division, losing in the title game 14-8.

I just found out via the AD for Pine Richland that the Eds at PR game (week 1) is not even scheduled or official yet. PR is looking at a couple options and it could be Friday 8/25 or Saturday 8/26. That week 1 opponent is NOT confirmed or final and may not be St. Eds. That's the latest so far regarding St. Eds vs Pine Richland. Keep ears open.

The Eagles have had success when their OL is athletic and allows them to maintain a run first "spread" offensive scheme. They are asked to be mobile in both trapping interior D linemen and getting to the edge and blocking LB's and DB's. Even when the Eagles play a 1st year starting QB and RB combo, like they did in 2016 and will be asked to do so in 2017, they are at their best when they get dominate OL play.

OL plays well in 2017... I expect this team will be very good.

Go Eagles!

That's interesting, do you know of any reasons why they may be looking for a different opponent?

No. I don't know. I was actually surprised to hear that. I figured it was scheduled, and was trying to confirm it being that Friday or Saturday. Unless Eds has someone else in mind too. He did not 100% rule the game out, he did say that he has other options and looking into them all. I don't know if the Friday/Saturday thing is an issue for PR or not. He was somewhat vague about it. I hope it gets scheduled though. 2 nice programs and I liked watching the game last year, and would like to see them play again. If I hear anything, I will post it. You can do the same. Thanks.

Cathedral is now affiliated with the Brothers of Holy Cross as of recently, after the Brothers has pulled out back in the 70's.

Any idea of where some of the 2016 senior Eagles will be playing college football? SEHS usually has a handful of seniors sign on signing day, which is coming up in a couple weeks.

St. Ed's had talent, but nowhere similar to other years in terms of numbers or quality. The difference was most apparent in terms of real game changers. They've had one or two players on each side of the ball most years who could take over games for stretches. They didn't have that this year. Lot'[s of nice players but everybody needed to do their job on almost every play for the team to be effective.

Only commitment at this point I am aware of his Kordell Hoover to D2 Grand Valley State. Mel Jackson may be the only 2017 grad with D1 offers, but he remains uncommitted to date.

I imagine St. Edward would jump at the opportunity if McKinley has interest.

Any update on the 2017 schedule now that the Cathedral game appears to be confirmed? Glenville, etc.? It would be nice to see a full 10 game schedule with a young team entering the 2017 football campaign... promising classes over the next two years aside, the weekly opportunity to get game rep.'s will make a difference as any season unfolds.

Go Eagles!

No updates. Week 1 is only tentative, and have not heard about weeks 2 or 3. Week 5 Buchtel also not confirmed.

Just watched the Senior Bowl. St Ed grads Tyler Orlowsky (W. Va.) at center and Kyle Kallis (Mich) at guard for the North on the North's final drive. They missed the 2 point conversion for the win. Kareem Hunt (Eastlake North or Willoughby South? - For some reason I can't remember) was awesome.
With all the red shirt business in college, I can't remember if Orlowsky and Kallis were on one of the Ed's title teams? Also, Kareem Hunt from the MAC looks like he can definitely play at the next level.
