GOAT OH HS Top 10 Poll

This poll is asking who you think are the Top 10 OH HS wrestlers of all time. SO SELECT 10 WRESTLERS IN THE POLL. While we are talking about HS and not NCAA or World Team accomplishments, I added post graduate accomplishments b/c I think that validates HS success. And we're talking about not just senior year, but HS career. But that doesn't mean you have to be a 4xer to be on the list, although the wrestlers on the list needed to have a minimum of 2 OH state titles to qualify for this poll.

Once we whittle this list down to the Top 10, we'll do another poll asking for the GOAT (may do a Top 5 in between).

There will be a little lag time between this post and the poll, so check back in a bit to see the nominees and pick your Top 10.

To decipher the info, I listed OH state titles, NCAA titles, WT FS/GR teams made, and WT medals in parenthesis. Kemp, i.e., is listed as follows:
Lee Kemp - 1974 OH 2 NCAA 3 World Team FS (Medals) 4 (1,1,3,1)
2 OH state titles, 3 NCAA titles, 4 WT appearances, and placed 1st, 1st, 3rd and 1st in those WTs. Again, this is FYI only and we're really looking at the Top 10 HS wrestlers.

I'll let this poll go for about a week and then announce the Top 10.

I seen all of your like wrestle in HS. If you do HS only I think guys like Mark Zimmer, Luke Fickell and Bo Jordon are defiantly in. Just my thought.
The title of the Poll is
Select the Top 10 OH HS wrestlers of all time. Post HS data is just FYI.

The title of the thread is
GOAT OH HS Top 10 Poll

If you read the first post it clearly states this out. The first three sentences of the first post are:
"This poll is asking who you think are the Top 10 OH HS wrestlers of all time. SO SELECT 10 WRESTLERS IN THE POLL. While we are talking about HS and not NCAA or World Team accomplishments, I added post graduate accomplishments b/c I think that validates HS success. "

I'm not sure how it could have been any clearer.

its not difficult, we all understand it, its HS GOAT -- could be a Johnny McGhee who had not much after HS, a Jr College ntl champ i think but everyone who saw him knows he was Mr Dynamite in HS. State champ at 4 different wts starting at 135 i think.

thanks for your efforts BDHOF, u put alot into this, excelent list---- but there is one HUGE omission, huge. Harry Lester 3X state champ, 3x Ironman champ, 2 time World Greco bronze medalist, Fargo free runnerup and Cadet WORLD free champion. World i said, every guy on the list who won a World of any kind raise your hand, only two i think.

Harry Lester is on the list and 2nd place (tied) in votes as of now, behind only Stieber.

One omission is I made is Joe Heskett. I had him on my early longer list but somehow missed him when doing the poll. He was a 3x Ohio champ, won an NCAA title and was on the World Team. He's probably not top 5 but very easily could be in the top 10. My apologies to this great wrestler.

Is this the same bdhof who rigged the system during the B1G pick'em tourney, awarding the title to the runner-up, thus making a mockery of the "B1G awards presentation"?

Surprised! aren't there some 3 time Ohio State champs on here. Wouldn't that exclude them from the GOAT category?

Nope. Some only had a chance to wrestle 10-12 and there are other 4xers who just weren't as good as some 3xers.

There are some 2xers who are better than some 4xers as well. Probably about half of those leading this poll in the top 10 are 2 or 3xers.

2x champ Jermaine Daniels , D1 Huber Heights Wayne in the early 90's was built like a bear and literally wrestled like a beast. Coach Masanek said Chris Coffing was pretty good for a 2 timer and a world Espoir champ

Some 2xers on the list who were pretty good - Bobby Douglas, Wojo, Kemp and Rowlands. Not more than a handful or so of 4xers that are better than this group.

bdhof,

Well done my Friend. I enjoy this and reading about others thoughts on most of the older guys on this list. I was able to watch about 98 percent of these guys in action at the high school level and they all could be top ten guys. Will be interesting.

Coach McCoy

PS. Did not see Heskett on the list. Did he not make it or did I just miss him?

I included all names that were mentioned over a 2 day period plus names that I researched. Heskett was someone I meant to list but mistakenly left off.

Jaggers, a 4xer in OH and 2xer in NCAAs. I actually mentioned him in my original post, thereby qualifying him for the poll, then left him off. It's hell getting old. I may have to do a top 10 and add a couple of wildcards (Heskett and Jaggers). As I mentioned with Heskett, I doubt that Jaggers is a Top 5 but could've been a Top 10. I'll think about that one.

Some others on my original list that I did not include purposefully are Andy Horvat OH 3xer, 1 World Team, JD Bergman OH 2xer, 1 World Team, and Hetag Pliev OH 2xer and 1 World Team (Canada). I didn't want to use all of my nominees, so I kept my list at about 10 and wanted others to bring out their favorites. Bob Preusse, Borofan and others added to the list.

Are Fried's accomplishments not all listed? I thought he did something in FS that was unprecedented and - due to classification changes - never to be done again??

yes Fried the only 4X Jr Ntl freestyle champ ever. National comp and for this era Ironman results are "SEPARATERS".

BDHOF good solution to list top 10 plus "Wildcards" ie "forgottens " like Jaggers and Heskett. JD Bergman significant too, i believe the ONLY Ohioan ever to wrestle in Fargo Jr Ntl Finals in BOTH styles 2 years in a row. ----and he won 3 of the 4. Bergman was a Warrior.

i find it hard to believe 17 of 48 didnt list David Taylor. 4X Ironman champ, many time Fargo champ in Both styles Greco and Free--- beat Logan Stieber head to head, dominated 3rd period, Ironman finals--- as a junior moved up a wt to face 4xer senior Colin Powell of St Eds and beat Palmer. Did have 2 losses as a frosh but otherwise WHAT ELSE COULD HE DO in high school ??

A lot of people didn't select 10 wrestlers. Maybe some didn't read the instructions (Select the Top 10 OH HS wrestlers of all time) and thought they could only pick one. That's my best guess. I think the last time I crunched the numbers, the average picks per voter was about 6.5. Maybe some only picked 5 or so, but I think most of those that didn't pick the full 10 only picked 1. Like Taylor, how could anyone not put Stieber in the Top 10? If someone's picking only 1, then that could make sense (for Stieber or Taylor).
