Cadet World Championships

It's freestyle season people, and the first World Championship of the year starts tomorrow morning with Cadets. Held in Zagreb, Croatia, the time difference is 6 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time, meaning wrestling will start at 4:30AM each day, the semis will be at 10:30 (noon on Monday), and the finals will be held at noon (after Monday).

This is the first year for the two day format, so Day 1 will be through the semis, while Day 2 will be repechage and the finals. I'll be up for men's freestyle and maybe another day or two, so if you find yourself bored at 5am talk to me about Cadets.

U.S. Cadet men’s freestyle roster
42 kg/92 lbs. – Chance Lamer, Corvallis, Ore. (Orange Crush WC)
46 kg/101 lbs. – Richard Figueroa, Sanger, Calif. (Sunkist Kids/Monster Garage)
50 kg/110 lbs. – Matthew Ramos Lockport, Ill. (Colt Wrestling)
55 kg/121 lbs. – Robert Howard, Cranford, N.J. (Titan Mercury/Bitetto Trained)
60 kg/132 lbs. – Joshua Saunders, St. Louis, Mo. (Titan Mercury)
65 kg/143 lbs. – Carson Manville, Shakopee, Minn. (Banditos WC)
71 kg/157 lbs. – Alex Facundo, Davison, Mich. (Team Donahue)
80 kg/176 lbs. – Abe Assad, Carol Stream, Ill. (Izzy Style WC)
92 kg/202 lbs. – Albert “AJ” Ferrari, Allen, Texas (Best Trained WC)
110 kg/242 lbs. – Daniel “Greg” Kerkvliet, Inver Grove, Minn. (Titan Mercury/Pinnacle)

Monday: Figueroa, Howard, Manville, Assad, Kerkvliet
Tuesday: Lamer, Ramos, Saunders, Facundo, Ferrari

I like Cadets because it lets guys kind of announce themselves to the world. Kerkvliet wasn't a known name like he is now before winning a Cadet gold medal- now he's a guy Im seeking out.

Okay morning for the Americans. As expected, Kerkvliet rolled up three opponents 10-0, and will face probably the Russian in the semis. Richie Figueroa had a pin and a 10-0 tech of the Russian and is looking pretty good headed into his semifinal bout with either Ukraine or Slovakia.

On to the other wrestlers. Howard, Manville, and Assad all won their first match then lost their second; Howard and Assad's opponents are in the semis tonight. Manville lost to the Japanese wrestler, who unfortunately dropped his quarterfinal match, ending Manville's world championships.

Richie Figueroa with the 10-4 win over Ukraine and he moves on to the finals! Figueroa is a Cadet world medalist and will be wrestling Amirli of Azerbaijan (2017 Cadet world champ) in the finals tomorrow at noon eastern.

Kerkvliet beats the Russian and makes it two in the finals for the USA on day 1! They wrestle in the finals tomorrow and will be joined by Abe Assad, who got pulled back into repechage with the Iranian making the finals. Howard and Manville did not get pulled back and will end their tourney 1-1.

I'd say mixed bag at best out of day one.

Kerkvliet did what he was supposed to do.

I thought Figueroa was a medal contender, and he showed that.

I thought Howard and Manville could contend for medals, and they didn't. We'll see if Assad can "steal" a medal tomorrow, as he was the one from today's group I didn't see as a realistic medal contender.

In terms of tomorrow's group ... Saunders, Facundo, and Ferrari are the realistic medal hopes. I don't know what to expect out of Lamer, except that it's his "time", so maybe there's hope; however, for Ramos I just don't see it.

Okay, eventful day two so far. Lamer, Ramos, and Facundo all advanced to the semifinals and will be competing shortly. Ferrari lost to a good Iranian and needs a win from him in the semis to be pulled back in. Saunders was stymied by the Indian wrestler who then lost, and he finished his tourney 1-1.

Abe Assad won two matches in repechage this morning and will be wrestling for a bronze medal; Kerkvliet and Richie Figs will be wrestling for gold shortly as well.

Tournament of his life. Love his defense and his feel for freestyle. Looked good in every match so far.

Lamer and Facundo dropped their semifinal bouts, so they will be wrestling for bronze tomorrow. Ferrari got pulled back into repechage, so four USA men's wrestlers will be competing tomorrow.

Kerkvliet, Figueroa, and Assad for medals soon.

Day 2 ended with three medals, as Assad comes through with the bronze. However, Figueroa and Kerkvliet both dropped their finals matches and will settle for silver. Four wrestlers going for medals tomorrow

Today's thoughts:

FINISHING OFF THE FIRST GROUP
Figueroa lost to a defending champ for gold
Kerkvliet failed to repeat as a gold medalist
Assad was a surprise bronze medalist

THE SECOND GROUP
Matt Ramos out of total left field into the finals. Never has made a state final in Illinois high school, never been a "mega-star"
Facundo in the medal hunt as you would have thought
Lamer doing what was possible, though I honestly had no expectations in that weight class
Ferrari pulled back into the hunt is good news, and he certainly has potential to medal tomorrow
Saunders not being in medal contention has to be a disappointment given his freestyle exploits

USA Cadet freestyle will exit with four-to-seven medals. I'm blanking on what the medal count has been the last two years, but we can get to something that's right in line with it (six-ish, right?)

2017- 6 medals (4 gold, 2 bronze)
2016- 7 medals (3 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze)
2015- 5 medals (3 gold, 1 bronze)

If Ramos loses tomorrow it will be the first time since the re-institution of cadets (2011) that the USA didn't win a gold medal. However, they do have a chance at tying their most medals ever (7) if Lamer, Ferrari and Facundo all can take bronze.

The USA gets a Cadet World Champ in Matt Ramos!! Steps over a single from the Japanese wrestler and gets the pin; what a tourney from Ramos.

Lamer dropped his bronze medal bout and will finish 5th- believe he has another year of Cadet eligibility to improve on that finish.

Facundo with the clutch come from behind win against the Russian and he will take bronze! Was losing 5-0 after the first period, great match. That's five medals for the USA so far.

AJ Ferrari with a takedown with five seconds left to take bronze!! Two straight clutch takedowns for USA upperweights, the team finishes with six medals. Great tourney, will have more later.

Tons of random things:

45kg- The US has only medaled at the lightest weight once (McHenry, 2015). But of the 7 guys who didn't medal, 5 got pulled into repechage.
48kg- Before McHenry last year, the US hasn't medaled at this weight. Figueroa made it two medals in a row here
51kg- Ramos is the US' second medalist here (Lee, 2014); both of them are gold
55kg- 11 wrestlers have made two world teams: 5 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze, 4 DNP. Howard has a chance last year to be the first cadet to make 3 freestyle teams
60kg- Back to back years I thought this weight would medal and didn't (Decatur)
65kg- First time in four years USA didn't medal here (Teemer, Yianni, Verkleeren)
71kg- The US has medaled at the upper four weights each of the last three years. That's impressive
80kg- Assad was one of two Illinois boys to medal (Ramos) and the third straight year Illinois has medaled (Lewan, 2017; Warner, 2016)
92kg- Fourth straight year the US has won bronze here (Hoffman, Warner, Webster). First Texas wrestler to medal at cadets
110kg- FIFTH STRAIGHT YEAR the US has medaled here. Fourth straight year a Minnesota wrestler has medaled here (Kerkvliet, 2017; Steveson, 2016/2015)

Thank you much. Always a fun two days with not enough sleep and 20 year old Russians, but always worth it.

Support the women tomorrow too. Two Ohio wrestlers (Olivia Shore and Leilah Castro) will wrestle, as well as Emily Shilson going for gold (and Macey Kilty. She's great).

Next world championships is Juniors on September 17th-23rd

Good day for the women. Emily Shilson won a gold medal, Tiare Ikei won bronze, Macey Kilty is wrestling in the finals tomorrow, and Olivia Shore and Leilah Castro (both Ohio natives), along with Sterling Dias, are wrestling for bronze tomorrow.
