Garfield Heights D-3 District Rankings (Off-Season #2)

I’ve started moving wrestlers around from the weights that they wrestled last year. Some of the weight shifts are based off of where the wrestlers have been competing in the off-season, some is based off of people sending me line-ups. Some of the changes are based off of how the wrestlers have grown over the last few years. A lot of the movement is pure guesswork.
I welcome any insight into where wrestlers will or may be competing next season, because I know that I’m going to be way off on many wrestlers, especially this time of year.

I paired the freshmen with the school that they were listed at on the Yappi thread about middle school state placers. If there was more than one possible school listed, I took a guess.
If there are any freshmen listed at the wrong school, feel free to let me know. Also, if there are any other wrestlers who have transferred, decided not to wrestle next year, or graduated (but I mistakenly left them in the rankings), please let me know.

I love doing these rankings, but as it has been pointed out before, they are just for fun. To any wrestlers who read these and feel that they are ranked too low, you may be right.
I am bound to be wrong on many of the rankings, but fortunately they have absolutely no impact on how anyone will finish at any tournament this season or any other year.

* = unsure about participation or availability

106-
1. Nolan Frye- Cuyahoga Hts (2nd middle school state)
2. Patrick Reineke- Hawken (2nd middle school state)
3. Brandt Virden- Columbiana (5th district)
4. Joey Bond- Newbury (6th district)
5. Jarrison Moore- Norwayne
6. William Davidson- Kirtland
7. Zach Lyons- Tuslaw
8. Jeffrey Rosin- Brooklyn

I started the former middle school state finalists at 1 and 2, though they’ll be a stark contrast between the two. Frye wrestled 102 at the middle school state tournament last year, so he may grow out of this weight. Reineke wrestled 84, so he may have to grow into the weight as the season progresses.

113-
1. Brett Szuhay- Crestwood (8th state)
2. Michael Prikryl- Rootstown (SQ)
3. Dylan Martin- (W.S.) Northwestern (SQ)
4. Deagan Foster- Waterloo
5. Daniel Demma- Garfield
6. Josh Gibson- Rittman
7. James Klingman- Berkshire
8. Justice Fraley- Loudonville

Foster has been wrestling 113 for freestyle, though that is where he started last season before cutting to 106. I also saw a result from Prikryl at 120, so he may wind up higher that 113.

120-
1. Caleb Edwards- Rootstown (3rd state)
2. Jacob Edelman- Pymatuning Valley (SQ)
3. Jackson Reineke- Hawken (SQ)
4. Kyle Keenan- South Range (SQ)
5. Jeremiah McKee- Wellington (8th middle school state)
6. Gabe Mathias- Waynedale (5th district)
7. Trevor Meeker- Grand Valley (6th district)
8. Dominic Savoca- Crestwood

Edwards has been wrestling 120 in freestyle and Reineke has been up at 126.

126-
1. Jake White- Manchester (8th state)
2. Seth Majewski- Brooklyn (SQ)
3. Jacob McHood- Mogadore (4th middle school state)
4. Robert Pinkie- Lutheran West (SQ 2017)
5. Konnor Duncan- Kirtland (SQ)
6. Blake Rising- Mapleton (6th district)
7. Andrew Kollin- Rittman
8. Reggie Bouchonville- Oberlin

Pinkie could be higher after wrestling 132 in freestyle in the spring.

132-
1. Zach Larue- Manchester (4th, 6th, 6th state)
2. Jamie Viront- Tuslaw (SQ)
3. Michael Kucera- Independence (SQ)
4. Storm Stanley- Waynedale (SQ)
5. Noah Campbell- Pymatuning Valley (6th district 2017)
6. Austin Shepherd- Norwayne (5th district)
7. Cory Stiffler- Orrville (6th district)
8. Lachlan Thomas- Lutheran W.

Shepherd wrestled 132 at the freestyle state tournament.

138-
1. Niko Chilson- Rootstown (5th, 5th state)
2. Parker Watson- Lutheran W. (4th state)
3. Cael Rowland- (W.S.) Northwestern (8th state)
4. Maxwell Kirby- Fairless (3rd middle school state)
5. Kollen Butler- Orrville
6. Austin Partlow- Mogadore
7. Maison Martell- Smithville
8. Trey Wonner- (Columbiana) Crestview

Chilson wrestled 138 in the offs-season albeit with a weight allowance.

145-
1. Nick Burgard- (Ashtabula) St. John (1st state)
2. Brier Marthey- Tuslaw (SQ)
3. Trent Duvall- Rootstown (5th district, 6th district 2017)
4. Nick Cianciola- Canton C.C. (6th district, SQ 2017)
5. Donovan Palmer- Lutheran W.
6. Chase Keener- Smithville
7. Clayton Baglia- Chippewa
8. Ryan Staton- Jackson-Milton

Duvall wrestled up at 152 in the off-season, so he may wind up higher that this weight.

152-
1. David Cumberledge- (Ashtabula) St. John (2nd state)
2. Brennan Shirley- Tuslaw (SQ)
3. Beau Lefever- Mapleton (SQ)
4. Jack Brocco- Independence
5. Connor Hrubik- Garfield (6th district)
6. Jarrett Varner- Waynedale (6th district)
7. Wyatt Zimmerman- Orrville
8. Chandler Keener- Smithville

Hrubik has wrestled this weight during the off-season, though I don’t know what the weight allowance was at the event.

160-
1. Kyle Ryder- Tuslaw (5th state)
2. Nick Skye- Mogadore (SQ)
3. Ethan Ducca- (Ashtabula) St. John (6th district 2017)
4. Jeremy Tracy- Mapleton*
5. Micah Hershberger- Waynedale
6. Brock Lowery- Loudonville
7. Devon Dillon- South Range
8. Jimmy Senick- Independence

I saw freestyle results from Ryder and Marthey at 160 this off-season, so we’ll have to wait and see who wrestles where once the season starts. Ducca has wrestled as high as 170, but will likely be at 160.

170-
1. Sevi Garza- Rittman (7th state)
2. Clayton Takacs- Grand Valley (5th district)
3. Christian Blank- (Ashtabula) St. John (SQ 2017)
4. Gavin Davis- Loudonville (6th district)
5. Chris Anderson- Rootstown
6. Nick Rossi- Independence
7. Mike McHale- Newbury
8. Tyler Knight- Mogadore

There’s the potential for a ton of depth at this weight. Hopefully, the wrestlers will grow and spread out in the off-season.

182-
1. Jacob Lagoa- (Ashtabula) St. John (1st, 1st state)
2. Julian Colbert- Clearview (SQ)
3. Kaden Kidd- Norwayne (SQ)
4. Nathan Shaw- Waynedale
5. Alex Merwin- Triway
6. Doug Byrne- Wickliffe
7. Kaleb Merrick-Neff- Liberty
8. Zach Hazlett- Grand Valley

Lagoa’s weight could strongly influence the D-3 landscape of these upper-middle weights. It sounds like Blank will occupy which ever weight (170 or 182) that Lagoa doesn’t wrestle with Ducca going 160.

195-
1. Chris Langguth- Rootstown (4th, 6th state)
2. Jake Loar- Tuslaw (6th state)
3. Mitch Sanders- Newbury (6th district)
4. Kiras Kijauskas- V.A.-St.J.
5. Luke Clymer- Independence
6. Jordan Krucek- Cuyahoga Hts.
7. Michael Lowe- Mogadore (5th middle school state)
8. Mason Shreve- Grand Valley

I’ve seen off-season results from Loar at 195, though Langguth was 182 (with a weight allowance) for one event, so he may stay put at that weight.

220-
1. Ryan Boyle- Rootstown (7th, 4th state)
2. Justin Bell- Columbia (6th district)
3. Chase Cottrell- Grand Valley
4. Austin Ryder- Dalton (2nd middle school state)
5. Anthony Czap- South Range (5th district 2017)
6. Aidan Ritaccio- Kirtland (4th middle school state)
7. Dante Pelino- (Columbiana) Crestview
8. Joe Conners- Cuyahoga Hts.

Czap has been wrestling freestyle at 220 which could be a preferable weight during the season with state placers Langguth and Loar possibly moving up to 195.

285-
1. Joe Warren- Smithville (8th state)
2. William Lindsey- Hawken
3. Owen Stoudemire- Norwayne
4. Ryan Elrod- (Ashtabula) St. John (3rd middle school state)
5. Coddie Phillips- Orrville
6. Jeff Kusar- Kirtland
7. Noah Hoffman- Garfield
8. Jack Decker- Elyria Cath.

I can’t tell if I have Elrod to high or too low to start. This weight was very strong last year but 11 of the 16 district qualifiers from last year were seniors, including 5 of 6 district placers.

Teams:
1. Rootstown
2. (Ashtabula) St. John
3. Tuslaw
4. Waynedale
5. Hawken
6. Independence
7. Norwayne
8. Grand Valley/Mogadore

St. John will be favorites to repeat as state runners-up in D-3, but Rootstown will likely have too much depth to overcome at the district tournament, though there is some room to climb if wrestlers like Blank and Elrod can make the district finals.

A special thanks to Boro Fan for all the insight into the weights of the wrestlers, Baum’s Page and Jake’s Wrestling for all of the results that they provide, and to any of the other wrestling nerds that actually read these things.

Yes 195lb last season, he came through the Perry youth system, but went back to Fairless, his brother wants to dance with the big dogs, kudos to him, he will be a force in due time, will have great training partners in Perrys room
