Four-Point Line in the NBA, College and/or High School

Some talk on national sports shows lately about a 4 point line. I'm guessing this wouldn't be welcomed in High School basketball in the foreseeable future but what are your thoughts on other levels incorporating this shot?

If they did do it, how far should the line be?

If they put in a four point line, then a dunk should only be worth one point.

Maybe they could make a 2 point line. Anything inside the 2 point line is only worth one point. Would be fun to watch players jump from behind the 2 point line for dunk attempts.

Nate Miles used to shoot as soon as his foot hit the court. Can we get a five point line?

How about moving the high school and college line back a foot. Now that's a real 3 point line, not a long free throw worth 3 points as it is now. Then we can get back to real basketball and not a 3 point shooting contest virtually every night.

Maybe they could add a second hoop at 11.5 feet for 3 point dunks ? Or put a clown's head over your hoop if you get in the penalty defensively ?

definitely more exciting

eh......you ever watch a couple 11 yr old bozos, unsupervised pre-practice, hucking up "impossible shots I'll never take in a game"? Some of them would do it for an hour, easy.

Yeah. That's why the average high school kid has limited skills. Love the 3 point line but it wasn't invented to total dominate the game. Move it back and see only the best can shoot it.

I think that the effects limiting attempts would be short-lived. Kids would adjust quickly, and still be hot dogs. It's what they do.

Nate Miles drains shots from the 3rd floor track on the 1st floor baskets at the UT Rec like he's dunking an Oreo.

Football has the hail Mary pass and two minute offense to help teams win games that are just otherwise slightly out of reach. Baseball has the homerun and no clock, so it truly ain't over till it's over, basketball needs something similar...... the three, four, six and eight point shots.

Here is the way it would work. The three point line would be placed at a location on the court where par for taking 10 shots from this range for a shooter would be exactly the same average yield as taking 10 shots from two point range. Example, 6/10x2 =12 points. 4/10x3=12 points. The four point line would be found the same way,, 3/10 x 4 =12.. The six point line would be 2/10 x 6 = 12. (Probably near half court). For the real Hail Mary, the odds would have to be less than 1.5 in ten, likely somewhere inside the arch on the opponents side of the court..

This will bring some new slower games with less scoring the GCL will have virtually every game in play with their 2? to 2? scores.

It's become a 3 point clown show. Move it back a foot and let's work on basketball skills. Let's get back to real , skilled basketball and leave this ,now long free throw worth 3 points, a thing only for the very best players/shooters.

Are you kidding ? The NBA is "a 3 point clown show". It's obviously what they want. Ever see a Steph Curry brush-flop ?

Here's Steph now -

Yeah. It's what the NBA wants and now the high school and college players think that's what they should be. The 3 point line wasn't meant to dominate a game. It was meant to supplement a game. Move it back a foot and begin to watch real basketball

I don't see a lot of kids toeing the line. Moving back a foot, I don't see that bringing back anyone's definition of "real basketball" unless maybe someone decides it's ok to DEFEND against it.

Move it to Timbukto and by definition, it's still basketball. Someone is going to win and someone is going to lose. The competition is still there. But if there's no defense, of course the offense doesn't have to work together. Give ME an open shot from the stands and I'm going to take it. Why drive into a packed middle when I have better makeable open options? It's not shooting percentage that matters. It's scoring percentage.

Here's the deal. As a coach today it is so easy to defend most players. Run them off the 3 point line. Most can't dribble more then 2 dribble. Most don't have a pull up jumper and god forbid they drive to the hoop and get knocked down. There's an exception too every rule, but most kids today are so easy to guard today, it's ridiculous ! If you don't have basic skills, you get exposed ! Stand still 3 point shooters are a dime a dozen and they're are MANY of them.
