USWNT ripped for over-the-top soccer celebrations

Quote:
The US womenís soccer team did not make many friends after beginning its World Cup title defense with a tournament-record 13-0 blowout over Thailand in Group F on Tuesday in Reims, France. Alex Morgan scored five goals in a dominating win for the Americans.

The lopsided score didnít draw the brunt of the criticism ó it was what many deemed over-the-top celebrations by the Americans, especially after some of their late goals when the game was already out of hand. The reason the blowout score itself didnít receive criticism is because goal differential is an important part of the World Cup.

ESPN analyst Taylor Twellman took to Twitter to say he had a problem with the late-goal celebrations, especially goal No. 9, which was scored by captain Megan Rapinoe:

Is really stupid to celebrate like they did when you get up big like that.

It is in very poor taste. Typically you wont see people celebrate much at all when they score while being up big time.

I'm glad people seemed to get the "don't let up" aspect. In international soccer it's pretty much considered disrespectful to take your foot off the pedal. In their own qualifying, Thailand did the exact same thing to smaller countries when they could.

I can see where the late goal celebrations rubbed some people the wrong way (especially the last few), but I think the celebration with Rapinoe in particular was a case of "she's towards the end of her career, glad she got one after setting up so many others" than a case of "yeah, 9-0!!!"

The thing that annoyed me the most (and this was mentioned in one of the Tweets in the article) is that they unnecessarily emptied the clip with the set piece plays. That's just dumb. It's the equivalent of throwing out a trick play in a football game when you're up 56-0 against a non-conference cupcake. You save those for later, when you need it. All that accomplished was making things easier for the scouts of the better teams they'll have to face later.

You are correct . High school girls know better than this. High fives, pat on the butt is enough celebrating up by 10 goals.

This. I understand continuing to score, itís the over the top celebrations for going up by 9 that are classless.

To see how it SHOULD be done (in an almost identical situation - World Cup play, lopsided score, etc.), see Germany vs. Argentina from the 2007 Womenís World Cup.

Does it bother me? Not really. Would I have celebrated like that up 9-0? Probably not.

Part of the reason for that is because high school rules are stricter than FIFA for celebrations. In high school a lot of these would've earned yellows for being excessive/time wasting...

I completely agree though... After you're up 4 or 5, just slap hands and run back. Now, if some girl just scored her first goal ever in the World Cup, OK, but as others mentioned Rapinoe and Alex Morgan are seasoned vets... Came across as rubbing it in... Bad look.

I will say it was funny seeing the Canadian commentators, many of them former national team players, ripping the US for the celebrations... They're very clearly still salty the US beat them in the finals. Canadians have a HUGE little brother complex... They're inferior in every regard and deep down they know it.

Nah. Just most HS kids and coaches have more sense of reality than those WC players.

You don't go buck wild in celebrations when you are up big. That is something you learn in like Junior High.

In every sport there's a classy way to win and a classy way to lose. The USA team showed no class whatsoever.

As our coach told us when we were getting beat 36-0 - "if you want to stop them from celebrating, stop them".

You couldn't be more wrong. Canada wins everything they really care to win. Of course the only thing they really care to win anymore is Curling. We down here in the US are just lucky that the Canadians don't really care about any of the sports that we care aboot.

Just some b1tches on a self-hype trip.

Half of them are probably still high on sniffing their own farts after being fluffed up so hard by Sports Illustrated et al for LGBQRST! month.

It will be interesting to see what the other teams in the Group do against Thailand. At least then we could argue that the score was justified.

When differential is the first tie-breaker, bad stuff like a big scoreboard thrashing is kind of inevitable.

Good baseball tourneys use "runs allowed" first, which is a necessity when pitching talent is uneven and such a large part of the game. Why isn't "Goals allowed" the first tie-breaker ? Too many ties in that column ?

No problem at all with them running it up, the goal differential makes it imperative to do so.
The celebrating, ok somewhat. These things always come back to how classy you want to come off. There is isn't a group that's whined more in the last few years than the women's national soccer team. They want equal compensation for games, TV contracts and others like the men, although nationally and globally, people just don't attend or watch women's soccer (or women's sports in general) than men. That's not sexist, it's reality.

Most of the women on this team has been on this team for years, they've won alot of games, not sure if it's normal or out of character for them to celebrate like that. Generally when you have orchestrated celebrations like they did, it's premeditated and that's what gets people upset.

I honestly expected this type of blowout result. The US Women's team is basically the equivalent of the old Soviet Hockey Teams from 50 years ago. Like the Soviets in the 70s, the US team is made up of professional players competing against a bunch of amateurs.

That's not a knock of the skill of the players from other countries, it's a point that the US team has the advantage of doing this as a full-time job allowing them to train 24/7 while woman on teams from other countries are doing this on the side of jobs they have to support themselves... A lot of the goals came late in the 2nd half. I think that's a reflection on the fitness advantage the US has over other teams in this tournament.

The one player from Thailand was a California-born and raised girl who is allowed to play for Thailand because her dad was born there. The depth of talent in US Woman's soccer is pretty insane, there are multiple countries starting American-born woman. Kind of like Brazil on the men's side.

One thing to remember is that it was the not number of goal scored, that can be justified, but that the celebration of those goals was classless, made me ashamed that the letters on their shirts were USA, and that, as someone above said, act like you've been there before.

So sometimes the question comes up as to why the US women's soccer program is so much more successful than the men.
It's really very simple, in the US, the women's team is made up of some of the best athletes in the country. The only women's sport they have to compete with is the WNBA. Logically, when you look at basketball players vs. soccer players, pretty much different types of athletes.
On the guys side, when you're a young kid in America, the sports you can make the most money at is the big 3, football, basketball and baseball. Soccer is way down the list. Therefore, most kids do not go that direction. That's no saying the US Men are bad, it's just the best athletes from most of the popular soccer countries, play soccer first. Ours don't.
