Surprised by Ogunjobi too. I think the numbers confirm my disappointment with the results of he Njoku/Peppers first round. We can respectfully disagree on Kirksey. I think he was dinged up all year until he went out for good. I don't think he's an all-pro, but he can contribute and he's a very good guy in the community.

Kirksey's a light in the pants JAG. Only reason people valued him so much was because he was the shiniest of the turds.

Disagree on Peppers. Think he improved and will do better with a good DC.

Jury's still out on Njoku.

I think Peppers is primarily flash. He could be better than average but nothing special. I've thought he was vastly overrated since his Michigan days.

Of the LBs currently on the roster, I would keep Schobert, Kirksey, and Avery and jettison the rest. I honestly believe Dorsey & company will target LB in the draft.

I know hindsight is 20/20 but Bradley Chubb might have been the better pick at #4, not because of Denzel Ward's concussion issues, but because of that empty vessel at left defensive end. Ogbah was the invisible man. He was adept at batting down passes, but mostly because he was rarely in the opponent's backfield. Even getting doubled and held the lion's share of the time, Garrett was outstanding. Help on the other end would only increase his effectiveness.

Peppers? Still a work in progress, but I think he has plenty of upside. I don't think he's overrated. Some guys take awhile before the light goes on, and he seemed to be getting it the second half of the season.

When I see ratings like this, I reach for the salt shaker and sprinkle out a few grains. For instance...where is Jamie Collins in the bottom of the ratings? Kirksey was hurt. I'm not saying the guy is Kuechly, but he's serviceable and I think will see a reduced role next year, but will still be a viable member of the roster.

I think Peppers playing that deep safety role as a rookie really helped his vision on the field. With his athleticism he is really going to be fun to watch next season.

I'm really shocked to hear that Phelps, Levine, and some others don't seem to understand why Dorsey is interviewing so many guys as "HC" candidates. Guys of diverse ages and very different backgrounds. One even said, "It's almost like Dorsey doesn't know what he's looking for...."

Dorsey is gathering information. He's keeping all his cards close. He may already actually have "his guy", and he may not have even bothered to or have been able to interview his actual "guy" yet. I think he's working beyond just a HC search for this current hire. He loves the process, and he's building dossiers on guys. All the players that Dorsey scouts before draft day, you don't think he may drop a suggestion or two about their tendencies later when chatting up his coaches ?

When you bring someone in for a HC interview and talk football for a few hours, you get the candidates best shot when he is trying to impress. He spills it, to an extent, in most cases. Not all of these guys are going to get hired in this next cycle. They'll go back to their teams, and those staffs could get blown up next year. Dorsey will have scouted all their games in the coming season with "the soundtrack" of these interviews playing in his head.

Seems obvious to me

I've heard an interview with Dorsey where he's said he will interview guys who could be "1 year, 3 years or 5 years from potentially being a HC." To me, this says, as you mentioned, that he's interviewing candidates for future roles. The guy who may not be ready now could be in 3 years (if they need a re-hire) or could become available as a coordinator. Never hurts to have a relationship. Some of these guys I doubt he's even considering for HC but is "information gathering", as you also said.

To me that is the key ... while I don't think he is completely bad .... he is an average player getting paid like an elite player ... not worth his contract.

I don’t think Collins is “the key” but I’d keep him for 2019 and 2020. He’s right in his prime. With Avery’s performance as a rookie, I don’t think LB is the “need” many made it out to be before this season but it’s certainly in my Top 5 of positions I could see us targeting in rounds 1 or 2 this year. I’d be OK taking more of a “specialist” LB who we think could be an impact player situationally as a rookie but would need some time to develop into an every down star. That’d line up perfectly with really pushing for a playoff run in 2019 and 2020. Then Collins leaves/lower contract in 2021 and younger guy steps up/ready to lead.

We’re in a great position. Crazy how many options we’ve got.

There's no impact player at that position, including Schobert. I like that he's the QB of the defense but he's not the terror they need. Not only do they need a "thumper" tackling machine but also a LB that can cover a friggin TE. Haven't really had that guy since they've returned.

While he perhaps may be statistically "NFL average" by some measures, he also is sometimes tragically inadequate on critical plays. There is no excuse for his approach to football at this level, unless he 's just a dimwit running on pure instinct. I can't tell sometimes if he is taking plays off, burnt flat-footed on a bad hunch, or just plain lost.

Collins is a key to mediocre outcomes. He is a ticket to first round exits.

The beautiful part of a declining North while the Browns are building is that they can probably afford to play a raw late 2nd or 3rd round LB and get him up to speed by playoffs.

Do you really want young guys looking at Collins as a solid vet ? GTFOOH

They'd be better off FA shopping for LBs with a similar cap toll and better habits.

Just heard Fox say that the FG kicker should be replaced by a QB hucking the ball through the uprights. Maybe they could move the Allstate "Good Hands" up between the posts, and make them light up like the hockey goal lamp ? Make it worth 5 points if the opposing HC gets a remote control like the pulley system on the SkyCam to move the "Good Hands" around ? I guess Cardale has a future in Dustin Fox's NFL

Then the goofs go off riffing about traditional rules......

Adam the Fool eventually followed that up by demonstrating 0% understanding of a bicameral National Legislature. In Adam Gerstenhaber's vision of our Republic, the antiquated concept of each state having 2 Senators needs to be abolished.

I can only hope that he isn't such a dimwit and is merely trolling, but as an East Coast liberal from the center of the universe, NYC, his belief in this take is plausible.

Schobert is a TACKLING MACHINE.

There's a lot of unfair criticism for players on our defense thrown around by some Browns fans and the media.

One group seems to automatically dislike guys like Schobert and Peppers because they were brought in prior to Dorsey and played on those losing teams of the past few seasons. The entire point of playing young guys then was to give them experience to make them better players now. People need to get over the players some of these guys used to be and recognized these guys are making plays NOW. This defense is quickly becoming FEARED in the league. To be clear, I'm not saying you fall into this group BRFB.

The second group of people I see casting a lot of unfair blame towards players on our defense either don't seem to understand what Gregg Williams' defense is actually designed to do or they just don't agree with it. If you don't agree with it, fine, but that's not on the players. As for not understanding... Playing a safety DEEP and having Schobert focus more on stopping the run is because we're running a "bend but don't break" scheme where we'd rather let the TE pick up cheap yards over the middle than let them beat us deep or let them break huge runs.

I'm not saying we couldn't find a LB that is a better cover LB than Schobert, but he's one of the best run-stopping LB's in the league! You can't ignore that.

Schobert it 25 and is entering the final year of his rookie contract. He's going to get PAID after this season whether it's in Cleveland or elsewhere.

You're a tough guy to read. Sometimes it seems like you understand the process, other times...

I absolutely think Collins is a solid vet. He's proven to be a solid linebacker and he's got all those famous intangibles people love with him having playoff experience from his time with the Patriots.

The Browns are in a position where we are going to have DEPTH in the coming seasons. Unlike past seasons, I think the plan will be to constantly rotate young guys into the lineup to develop experience.

It's going to be VERY interesting to see how we approach re-signing players in the coming years. I suspect the plan, whatever it is, revolves around the rookie contract and will keep a pipeline of fresh talent cycling into Berea for a very long-time.

Schobert stays, obviously. And BR never said the Browns only needed one "tackling machine". Why are you not starting a different post for the other stuff up there ?

Collins obviously has some strengths, but he has some glaring negative "intangibles" that must escape a straight-up stat humper with no eye or sense for the game like yourself.

As for the rest of your post, I hope that stating the obvious in "faux rebuttal" makes you feel smart. It's creating the opposite opinion of you for me

Coincidentally, Collins and Schobert are 34th and 35th in the NFL tackling stats.

Looking at the top ten in the NFL tackling stats, only one of the players was drafted at a spot higher than the Browns pick in this draft, Kuechly who is 8th. Vander Esch, who is 3rd, was picked with the 19th pick. Of the remaining 8, 3 were picked in the 2nd round, one was picked in the 3rd, two were picked in the 4th and two were picked in the 5th. That tells me there are real "Tackling Machines" available down in the draft that could help the Browns.

I actually think Sashi Brown had some real nice "hits" in his drafts and Dorsey had some whiffs (Chad Thomas, possibly Corbett). Obviously, Garrett was the no brainer but he did get some nice guys. And I don't "hate" on Schobert, I just don't think the LB corps has a difference maker. I also like Peppers.

Don't get me wrong guys, I don't hate Peppers. I just don't ever seeing him being a star like many predicted when he was at Michigan. There were some early that saw him in the top 6 or 8 in the draft. I think he'll be decent and I have yet to see anything justifying his 1st round pick, but it's still early.

I am interested to see when comes of Corbett. He went from being a possible starter to a nobody very quickly.

To be fair the Browns line was rated among the best in the league, particularly inside...tough lineup to crack.

Always believe in a fat man with a Maserati.

Never judge an NFL O-lineman in his first year.

Wouldn't it be fun to be Bob Wiley's physical therapist for his busted ankle rehab, and make him stretch while busting his chops about it ?
