I wonder why that is. The OHSAA recognizes field hockey, lacrosse, etc., but not boys or girls tennis? Seems strange.

I believe the OHSAA holds state tennis tournaments for singles and doubles but not at a team level.

That is correct. The team tournament is operated by the Ohio Tennis Coaches’ Association, a la indoor track being operated by the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches. It’s a state title but not one that the OHSAA recognizes.

OHSAA is not the only state that does not do team tennis. Some states do, but others operate like OHSAA. Not sure why either.

That's not correct according to the OHSAA. https://www.ohsaa.org/Portals/0/Spor...entResults.pdf

Any one have an answer for my question?

I think that was Westerville South.

This is just 1 man's opinion, but if it's me, I'm including it as part of the current school's history. Getting the OHSAA to recognize it as such is a different matter, but an e-mail to Tim Stried might be all it would take. Incidentally, Bellpoint also won the 1925 state track & field title as well under the same coach.

However, if I was an opposing school constructing a database of all-time series records vs. all opponents, I would consider a series with Bellpoint to be separate from a series with Buckeye Valley.

In my neck of the woods, Canal Fulton Northwest has never won a state team title, but they're not on the list EagleFan posted because Canal Fulton HS won a basketball title back in 1938. Canal Fulton consolidated with another HS to form Northwest HS in the mid-'50s.

According to the all-time softball tourney results, both Westerville North and South made it to the state semis a few times, but neither won.

Willoughby South is nowhere to be found on the list of all-time softball tourney participants.

I am going to presume that was in slow-pitch, as opposed to fast-pitch. Slow-pitch is obviously not sponsored by OHSAA at the moment - I do not recall if it ever was either. I do know that slow-pitch used to be legitimately contested in high school through most of the 1990's before it went obsolete.

To go along with that up here in Defiance County, Fairview seems to claim the 1946 basketball title won by Farmer, so personally I'd probably consider it. Of course in Fairview's case, they've also got the 1989 girls basketball title so they wouldn't be on this list anyway.

There are probably a lot of homeless trophies floating around Ohio for high schools that won state and are now closed/defunct.

My first thoughts go to schools from the larger cities that are no longer around because of population shifts etc.

A few that come to mind:

Cincinnati CAPE-football in '85 and '86

Columbus Brookhaven-football in 2004

Toledo Macomber, 1989 Division I State Basketball Champs led by Jimmy Jackson. Devilbiss won some Track Titles although I don't recall the exact years.

Versailles cut it close that year. Swanton lost to them 21-20 in the playoffs on a missed extra point.

Then I guess they will stay on the list permanently!

Mogadore played Fostoria St. Wendelin in 1995 my junior year at their field. We were supposed to play them at our field the next year...they canceled on us after we won fairly bad (35ish points) and they knew we had the whole team returning the next season (ended up winning state title in 1996).

Cleveland MSD has closed Central, East, South, West Tech as well as merging West and Lincoln High Schools. I'm sure one of those schools, maybe all of them, won State Championships at some sport, even if it was back in the gaslight era.

Wooster Triway in Shreve Township, ground zero for competitive balance, is sill on the list.

Someday, when the private and public schools split, and the public schools have double digit divisions for their sports, they might, might, just win one.

Yes, and it was almost exclusive to NE Ohio. I know it was played through at least 1997.

Got it. I know those two were district powers back in the 80s and early 90s.
