Raising Cane’s Opening This Fall in Kent

This should be interesting. After all the businesses that closed down over the last 15 years on State Route 59, this should revitalize the area. Looks like Cane's, another restaurant, and mini-plaza opening up where Giant Eagle once stood.

Quote:
A new business development is in the works for a nearly 4-acre parcel on Route 59 in Franklin Township, near the Kent eastern city limits.

Drew Gatliff of Olio Development in Columbus, said construction on a Raising Cane’s restaurant is expected to start this month, weather permitting.

The fast food eatery specializes in chicken fingers and french fries and has a number of locations in Ohio, mostly near Columbus and Cincinnati.

Kent has really come around. The downtown area is wonderful. Looks like the success is reaching out to other parts of the city now.

Agreed. That area that Cane's is going in was at one time a fairly busy area. Then everything moved towards the downtown. At one time, they had Damon's, Ground Round, Ponderosa, and Denny's. Damon's has been empty for at least a decade and the other three are Chinese or Mexican restaurants that are lucky to have 4-5 cars in the parking lot.

An old restaurant chain.

Pretty much like a TGI Friday's

I remember they had an appetizer called the Pot O' Gold. It was just a mountain of fried everything. Probably killed a few people.

Ground Round was the hangout after high school football games a couple decades ago. Free popcorn and you could throw the peanut shells on the ground. There was always a line out the door on Friday and Saturday nights. Looks like there are a couple dozen still around in the Northeast and Upper Midwest.

Ground Round had a ridiculously large menu, so large that their food inventory probably put them out of business.

God I remember that thing. Had one on the northeast side of Cbus. The area is a major crap hole now.

We went to the new Raising Cane's in North Canton over the weekend. Line was out the door and the drive-thru had probably 30 cars in line with a cop directing traffic. I've only gone to Raising Cane's twice and it's good but I probably wouldn't wait that long again. I doubt that the one in Kent will be as crazy.

The Eastgate (Cincinnati) Canes was like that for about a month. It since settled down to a normal amount of patronage.

Agree with e_p that Canes chicken is nothing special...but their sauces are pretty good, and worth the occasional visit.

Strip mall area of 59 has an original big hat Arby's sign on a hilltop. You can probably see it from Ravenna

My high school's basketball team played Euclid at KSU in the late sixties, iirc. (Regionals?) We ate at this Arby's and - as a new experience - we loved it!

Update on the sign:

One of only a few remaining. Reminds me of the Big Boy signs...

Too bad they didn't leave the big hat and refurbish the inside. That place is in pretty bad shape. I believe their bathrooms are still on the outside and you need to get a key to open the door. It's been a couple years since I've been there but I'm guessing it's still the same.

For those in Cincinnati, City Bird Tenders is a solid new chicken place in OTR. Big fan of the spicy chicken sandwich.

Yep, that sounds like an original Arby's building. That's how it was when I worked one in the mid-1970's. Talk about a security hazard. I don't remember if we kept the doors locked or not - maybe we did and just told customers we didn't have public restrooms.

We have a new Chipotle on Columbus' south side, I-270 at Alum Creek Dr exit about 10 days old. It's one of the first to have a drive-thru window .... excuse me, that's a vehicular pick-up window, per Chipotle nomenclature.

I hear tell the VPU window line at that location has been wrapped clear around the building many times over the past week. But after the initial euphoria, it'll go back to normal. We had the same situation nearby when Popeye's and Hardee's opened. It doesn't take much for us South-Enders to get excited.

BTW, for any gourmands who remember the Ohio Deli (as seen on "Man vs. Food) - sadly, it's gone for good. That's where they put the new Hardee's.
