Toys R Us Files for Bankruptcy, Crushed by Online Competition

Quote:
Toys R Us Inc. filed for bankruptcy as the retailer, loaded with debt in a buyout more than a decade ago, failed to keep consumers from abandoning its stores for the lower prices and convenience of online shopping.

The company filed Chapter 11 documents late Monday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Richmond, Virginia. The chain secured $3 billion in debtor-in-possession financing to stay open while it restructures, according to a company statement.

Doesn't look good for Toys R Us...

Quote:
Toys “R” Us Inc. is making preparations for a liquidation of its bankrupt U.S. operations after so far failing to find a buyer or reach a debt restructuring deal with lenders, according to people familiar with the matter.

While the situation is still fluid, a shutdown of the U.S. division has become increasingly likely in recent days, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the information is private. Hopes are fading that a buyer will emerge to keep some of the business operating, or that lenders will agree on terms of a debt restructuring, the people said.

The toy chain’s U.S. division entered bankruptcy in September, planning to emerge with a leaner business model and more manageable debt. A new $3.1 billion loan was obtained to keep the stores open during the turnaround effort, but results worsened more than expected during the holidays, casting doubt on the chain’s viability.

Not a shock, traditional retail business struggling big time. Heard a story on the radio yesterday that a significant number of people shop on line while legally drunk. Smart businesses have begun to offer bigger discounts after 9PM in hopes to snag more business. I'm honestly not making this up. That's where we are at these days.

They were always the most expensive toy store. I'm surprised they lasted a long as they did.

Looks like the end of the road is here as Toys R Us is going to liquidate it's inventory and closing it's 800 stores.

This sad. I really like taking my son to Toys R Us, although I'm sure I contributed to its demise in my Amazon shopping.

I dont know how much of this is accurate, but I heard it wasnt so much the millennials and online shopping as it was actually Toys R us inability to invest back into its stores over time.
