This team has the potential to be very good. The girls should be even better. Should be an exciting year.

Taborn playing again??

Excited to see Andre Gordon on the court. How are the other freshman? Heard that the youth in Sidney is very good.

Only problem I see is they might have trouble with teams that have size.

Not sure how they did in scrimmages. I've seen photos but haven't read any specifics. I know they played Beavercreek, Fort Loramie, and Northmont but not much else other than Gordon has already had some highlight reel dunks.

Jackets open on the road at West Carrollton - Sidney Daily News

Sidney head boys basketball coach Andy Slaughter will unveil this year’s edition of the Yellow Jackets Friday night when they play at West Carrollton to open the season. And he hopes there aren’t as many ups and downs in that game as there were in preseason.

“A lot of ups and downs,” he said. “I felt at times we were really, really good, but there were times when we had lapses and were really bad. But today (Monday) was probably the best we’ve looked in practice all preseason.”

The Jackets have a good core group of players returning from last season, when Sidney won nine games, but there is also an influx of young players with a lot of promise. And it’s Slaughter’s job to bring them all together.

“A good returning group but also a lot of newcomers,” Slaughter said, “And we’re trying to mesh everybody together and make it a cohesive unit. You can’t come in and just start playing well together.”

The returning list is led by guard Cameron Gallimore, who averaged 16.5 points per game last season, not to mention shooting 84 percent from the free throw line.

Along with him are veteran players like Darryl McNeal, Allec Gordon and Devon Rogers, the latter two being the team’s top rebounders a year ago.

Then you have players like freshman Andre Gordon, who is expected to be a key player for the Jackets, 6-4 senior Lorenzo Taborn, who is back after a year away, and sophomore Isaiah Bowser, who saw limited action last year because of an injury.

“We feel we have eight guys that can start or be in there at the finish,” the coach said. “If you don’t start, that doesn’t mean you’re not going to play a lot of minutes. We started a different group every scrimmage and about every quarter in preseason. So as far as who will start in the opener, realistically it will be the guys who practice best the next few days, and the group that we think will give us the best chance to beat West Carrollton.”

Slaughter is trying to get across to his players the importance of defense.

“I’ve said that record-wise, we’ll be as good as we are defensively,” he said. “If we play to 50 percent of our defensive capabilities, we’ll win 50 percent of our games. So for us to be a good team, we have to buy into the defensive end. And if we can block out and rebound, it will allow us to do the things we want to do offensively.”

Slaughter said the Jackets will be challenged Friday night on the road against the Pirates, who were 5-18 last season. When they met the Jackets, Sidney won at home 72-66.

“They’re going to be athletic, quick and get up and down the floor,” Slaughter said. “They will press a little and use the run-and-jump in the half court. They lost their best player to graduation so personnel-wise they will be different.

“We’re focusing more on ourselves right now,” he added. “If we come out and execute at both ends, we should be fine. So we’re not worried much about what they do.”

The Jackets come right back on Tuesday and play their first home game. Neighboring rival Bellefontaine will provide the opposition, and if last season is any indication of how the game will go, fans will be in for a treat. Sidney won 44-43 on Gallimore’s buzzer-beater.

Jackets win big - Sidney Daily News

Sidney led from start to finish in pounding West Carrollton 88-52 in the boys basketball opener Friday night on the road.

The Jackets next take their 1-0 mark up against Bellefontaine Tuesday at home.

“At times we looked good and at times we looked like a young team that was not using to playing together yet,” said Sidney coach Andy Slaughter. “But we did a good job of attacking the rim, and getting to the line.”

The Jackets shot 60 percent from the field and hit 25-for-35 from the line. They also put 11 players in the scoring column.

Freshman Andre Gordon led the way with 20, 10 of those coming in the third quarter. Cameron Gallimore added 15 and Isaiah Bowser finished with 13.

Sidney (88) — Bowser 13, Duff 6, McNeal 8, Gallimore 15, Taborn 6, Cooper 3, An. Gordon 20, Al. Gordon 6, Rogers 6, Hudgins 5, Roberts 2.

WC (52) — Mattheus 12, Holland 5, Landess 4, Vanskyer 4, Custenborder 4, Price 2, Evans 9, Marshall 2, Champion 4.

Awesome start to the season. Did you see the freshman score? 83-21. And that's without the 3 varsity players.

Nice start for Sidney. Nice start for all the North too, with Butler and Troy also winning. I don't know what Bellefontaine has, but I know they lost their three best players from last year's district champ team. May be another big win for Sidney.

Not that concerned with Bellefontaine although they have a history of playing close games. Sidney beat them last season on a Gallimore buzzer beater.

Wow...Sidney opens the game up with an emphatic alley-oop from Gallimore to Gordon. The energy in the gym is crazy.

21 points in the first quarter and 23 the rest of the game. Was it the zone? If so, that's the blueprint everyone else will use to slow them down.

It was the zone and Bellefontaine ate clock each possession. They figured out real quick that they were outmatched trying to run & gun. Jackets did miss quite a few good looks in the 2nd half though. But yeah it looks like the recipe to stopping them is play 'small ball'.

Still credit to the defensive effort that kept them in the game and allowed them to pull it out. A late steal put them up 42-40 and they maintained the lead through the last minute plus.

Andre Gordon finished with 11 points, Gallimore had 18

SIDNEY — Going forward, the Sidney Yellow Jackets will have to figure out how to score against zone defense.

But playing defense themselves doesn’t appear to be a problem.

Sidney scored 21 points in the opening quarter, and 23 the rest of the way after Bellefontaine switched defenses. But the Jackets played solid at the defensive end all night and it led to a 44-42 thriller in a non-league rivalry match at the high school Tuesday night.

Sidney goes to 2-0 heading into a challenging weekend, with road games at Xenia Friday and Lebanon Saturday.

“Bellefontaine played great,” said Sidney coach Andy Slaughter. “We started the game out well, but Bellefontaine never gave in. They are very well-coached, very disciplined and very fundamental. But I was proud of the way our kids fought back when we were down 40-36 with two-and-a-half minutes left. They never felt defeated. You could see it in their faces. They never felt like they were going to lose.”

Sidney had a good first half, mainly behind the long-range shooting of Cameron Gallimore, who hit four three-pointers before the intermission.

Sidney poured in 21 points in the opening quarter, with Gallimore hitting three of his treys, then hit the first bucket of the second quarter to make it 23-14. But at that point, Bellefontaine head coach Henry Stolly switched from a man-to-man to a 2-3 zone and it effectively slowed Sidney’s offense.

The Jackets didn’t score again in the quarter until just 1:58 remained on a bucket inside by Lorenzo Taborn. But because the Jackets continued to play well at the defensive end, when Gallimore hit his last three of the half, it gave the Jackets a 28-18 lead.

However, after the Chieftains scored to make it 28-20, Sidney ran the clock down and Gallimore was fouled. An 84 percent free throw shooter last season, he missed both attempts, and Bellefontaine was able to score at the buzzer to make it a six-point game at the break, 28-22.

Bellefontaine was down 34-25 midway through the third quarter but scored the final eight points of the period to pull within 34-33.

The Chieftains then scored first in the final period and later used a three-pointer to go up 40-36 with 4:20 remaining in the game.

But the Jackets then mounted a comeback of their own, with an 8-0 run that made it 44-40 with just 28 seconds remaining.

It started with two free throws from freshman Andre Gordon, then Gallimore came up with a steal and a layup. Taborn and Gordon hit one of two free throws each to make it a four-point game.

Bellefontaine got a free throw to make it 44-41, and with :16 left, Gordon missed the front end of the one-and-one.

Things really got interesting when Bellefontaine hit one free throw, missed the second, only to have the rebound go off Sidney. The Chieftains had one final chance, and a three-pointer bounced off the rim as the buzzer sounded.

Gallimore had 18 to lead the Jackets, and Gordon added 11. Taborn chipped in seven.

Bellefontaine’s Jacob Rogan had 27 in Bellefontaine’s win over Celina, but was held to seven Tuesday by Sidney’s Darryl McNeal.

“Darryl played 32 minutes and was stuck to Rogan the whole night,” said Slaughter. “And Rogan’s a scorer. Darryl played tremendous defense on him all night.”

Bellefontaine (42) — Nease 10, Rogan 7, Miller 6, Clement 6, Tillman 7, George 6.

Sidney (44) — Bowser 2, Gallimore 18, Taborn 7, An. Gordon 11, Rogers 6.
