Maybe there is some other reason I don't know of that includes the number 12.
Does anyone actually have an answer for this? I've seen it a lot and would like to know if there is a special meaning. Years ago #38 held a special place in the memory of Brandon Shima.

It is definitely a reference to Tatarunas. There are shirts out there with a picture of him and the BEL12VE slogan. I think it started internally with his family showing pride in their son/grandson/nephew possibly by creating shirts, but then it expanded to beyond them. I don't like it, but whatever. Just get the win tonight. Please...

I certainly didn't expect to be in this game. I thought we'd be out in round 2. Team has already overachieved big time imo and I'm proud of the kids for coming together and being so tough

But please God win tonight ! I don't want to be 4 time runner ups. Program has paid its dues and needs to finally win a title. Go Cards!

4th time is the charm. Two of my favorite teams won 1st in their 4th attempt, St. Edward and St. Paul. St. Xavier, Bishop Watterson, and Orrville also won 1st in their 4th time there.

Unfortunately, the dream season came to an end. At the beginning of November, most rational and unbiased observers thought Mentor was more likely to lose to Stow in the first round than they were to win the region and eventually return to the state championship game. Mentor pummeled Stow, grinded out wins over Eds/Ignatius, took care of business on a so-so night against Liberty, and played one solid half in the state championship game. It takes two halves to win and the dream ran out of gas.

This team improved a lot throughout the season and overachieved. For the most part, I felt like this was a pretty average Mentor team. I can think of several other years (02, 03, 06, 07, 11, 12, 13) that probably had better teams. But the emergence of McDougal and the improvement of the defense showcased what could be. The teams that beat Eds and Ignatius were as good as Mentor has played in the Triv era, all things considered. Ran the ball and played good defense for the majority of the game. It was fun while it lasted.

As for last night's game, it is hard to say "what if" when you lose by 28. But those watching knew the game could have been a lot closer than that. Three critical plays changed the complexity of the game.

The first was the kick return. I don't remember Mentor fumbling a kick return all season - please correct me if I'm wrong. I love what Luke Floriea brought to the team this season. His emergence as a big playmaker on offense forced Triv to use the 5-wide often in 2017. He will be a fantastic football player the next two seasons. But he was not a regular kick returner and was put into a situation he shouldn't have been in. That turnover was very costly. Mentor outplayed PC in the first half. Should have been up a touchdown, maybe more. Had they been up 21-14 and getting the ball to start the half, we would have seen a closer game...maybe even a Mentor win.

The second big play is the one everyone is talking about. Going for the score on 4th and inches to start the half was a huge game changer. To be fair, Triv rolled the dice in the first half by using the pass on a critical 4th down that led to a touchdown. So all things considered, Triv was 50/50 on those plays. But IF Mentor ran Tatarunas up the middle, you have to believe there was a great chance he gets those few inches needed. Up 28-21 does not guarantee a win. But it changes the complexion of the game and likely means Mentor is probably going to have a chance to tie (at worst) in the 4th quarter.

The third big play was when Mentor was down 35-28. PC had the ball near midfield. It was 3rd and 4. One stop by the defense and a punt will give Mentor's offense the ball with a chance to tie. Mentor's defense couldn't stop the run and a pretty conservative play call gave PC a first down and they would continue to wear down Mentor's defense on route to a 35-7 second half beatdown.

4th and Inches

Did Triv make that call or could it have been made by the Offensive Coordinator?

Also, could Triv have been having a flashback to the Championship game against Moeller when his QB had the lights turned out?

Great season. Unfortunately, to go this far, that 4th and inches play should never have been called. McDougal was right there to easily get the first down. The players deserved better.

Once again, NO adjustments in the second half. It's as if the coaching staff thought that their QB would not run the ball in the second half. They could take a lesson from the Houston Texans, taking their best player -- DE Clowney -- and putting him at MLB to put some big hits on their QB and stop the run. They needed to at least try something. Very discouraging once again. But the team did overachieve.

I was at the game but I watched part of the replay. Nice words for Tadas Tatarunas by the commentators -- said he has all the tools to be a D-I QB. Hope Syracuse is still in the mix along with possibly new coaches changing teams. Sub-division Robert Morris offer is still there but the preferred walk-on at OSU is really not an option if looking for the prospect to play.

Mentor Cardinals Football 2017

Great summary cardz. I agree with those 3 play calls. Game could have definitely been closer. Pc was awesome though

I think this team was better than 2002, 2012 and maybe 2007 as an overall team. But 2006 , 2011 , 2003 and 2013 were definitely more talented. I still think 06 and 11 should have won the state title. To me they were the best team in the state those years

But this team should be proud. They achieved a ton. And like we talked about , I never expected this to be a state title contending team. The players should be proud.

Hopefully. McDougal will get the chance to play in college. A D-I of D-II school could benefit from a player like him.

Do you ever expect Mentor's "Funky" defense to be good enough to help the Cards win the state title? Though the D performed better than expected against St I and St EDs this year................not enough D in the title game?
