Region 1: Holy War II: St. Edward (6-3) @ St. Ignatius (8-2)

Let's try this again, thoughts and predictions? Has been a while since we saw this matchup. Can the Cats defeats Edwards 2 weeks in a row?

My biggest concern is Dzuro on turf compared to grass.

Looking at the stats, itís hard to believe St Ignatius won the game, let alone by a couple scores. The only stat advantage I saw in Ignatiusí favor was red zone efficiency. When Ignatius got in there, they executed. St Eds didnít.

Anybody have the records/details on the playoff games these two have played in? I know they played in the regional final a couple years ago. Before that, I just remember rematches being pretty one sided.

I believe Ignatius has won each of the playoff games, and that they won the regular season game as well those years. I believe back to back weeks has only happened once, 2008, and playoff game was 37-0. I believe the other 2 playoff games were very close, including the ot playoff game a couple years ago

Ignatius had a few breaks go there way last night, and IMO, they will need them again to win next week.

Eds just just has more weapons on offense. The Ignatius defense is very good, but they will need help.

There have been 3 rematches of the Holy War

2008
Wildcats 34 Eagles 12 (wk 10)
Wildcats 37 Eagles 0 (wk 11)

2011
Wildcats 20 Eagles 17 (wk 10)
Wildcats 20 Eagles 17 (wk 12)

2016
Wildcats 34 Eagles 7 (wk 10)
Wildcats 38 Eagles 31 in OT (wk 13)

In each case, Ignatius won the rematch.
The good omen for Ignatius is that in all 3 years, the Wildcats ended up playing in the state championship

Agree. St. Edward is more talented overall, but the teams are not that far apart. The Eagles have more playmakers on offense whereas Ignatius has more playmakers on defense.

If the Ignatius offense can achieve a reasonably close time of possession (and last night may be considered reasonable - within 5 minutes), the Ignatius defense can stay fresher and have an impact. In weeks 1 and 2, the Wildcat offense had minimal time of possession and the defense was gassed by early in the 3rd quarter.

If Cats are to make it out of the meatgrinder, will likely have to beat 3 teams 2 times this year...Edwards, Euclid and Mentor

I think Region 1 is quite tough this year. If Mentor had beaten Solon to finish 10-0, I'd be more comfortable making them heavy favorites. I am not sure if the loss to Solon provides a roadmap for other teams to take the Cardinals down.

You are correct. Kipp was hurt in the Shaker game, the week before the Cards played Solon

I believe he was also out in their thumping of Euclid, 29-7.

I don't disagree with you. However, i believe without Eds'mistakes and turnovers Ignatius head to head will fall short. The teams aren't far apart but Eds moved the ball well. The Ignatius defense will once again have to rise up. I think the focus will be on Dzuro this time around

I agree, Ed's is overall a much faster team on offense but they made crucial mistakes at crucial times which Ignatius did not do. The revenge factor could be at play a little bit too but I think Kyle will have his guys ready for it. The weather could be something to watch for if it mitigates the speed at all.

So, "home team." Does that just mean they switch sides of that stadium in Parma? Not much interesting going on locally, might be fun to travel for this one.

Well they cannot stream video of the game, it will be audio so if people want to see what happens they need to go in person.

St. Edward plays at Lakewood, not Parma.

I'd seen that field behind St. Ed's and was pretty sure they didn't play there. I should have realized there would be a Lakewood High School. Thanks.

Hey, if Larry Kelly, St. Ignatius' oldest living alum ( 103),could make it to the game last Friday in that weather, everybody should be able to make it this Friday.

I don’t see that being the motivating factor to get a whole new generation to show up.

Let's not invite everyone, no online presale so this guy needs to get tix at the gate. Dont think there will be an issue though, people these days shrink when football weather shows up

He must have been from the class of '33. Pretty sure Ignatius went undefeated against Ed's in all sports that year.
