College coach, yes and it’s not even close. Nobody will ever again have 5 titles in 9 years. It’s truly unbelievable to be able to DOMINATE that way with how recruiting is now. Not to mention another title with LSU.

No. Bear Bryant, Paul Brown etc. There are some elite coaches out there. Is he one of the best, sure.

As for all of football, Saban isn't even close to the great NFL coaches because unlike all the great FBS college coaches, pro coaches actually have to compete within a true playoff system in a league that is pretty even from top to bottom.

lotr clearly salty as evidenced by him bringing up the college football playoff in every thread, even when unrelated to the topic at hand.

I brought it up contrasting what a pro coach faces versus a college coach. I also brought up parity within the NFL, unlike college football. So yes it was related to the question of "Is Nick Saban the best coach of all time".

I love Belichick and think he's one of the best pro coaches of all time but I wouldn't put him at #1. Off the top of my head I would take Paul Brown & Vince Lombardi over Belichick.

Yes. Saban is working miracles in an era with much more restrictions on scholarships, practicing, recruiting, etc.

You very clearly made it a point to throw shade at the playoff, presumably due to salt.

That's what's great about sports - everyone can have an opinion and none of our opinions can ever be proven right or wrong at least if the opinion is within reason.

Well now that you brought it up, the current playoff system does suck and would greatly benefit from being expanded to 8 or even better 12 teams!

You have been proven wrong constantly over the last few weeks.
The committee got it right.
The SEC dominated again.
The bowls are meaningless.
Itís a FOUR team playoff.
It wonít be changing before 2026.

Seriously?

I'll just go with Paul Brown, you can look up Vince Lombardi - you know the guy whose name is on the Super Bowl trophy.

* PB founded the Cleveland Browns and then coached them to FIVE straight PRO championships (3 in the AA league and 2 in the NFL), coached his Browns team to TEN STRAIGHT appearances in their league championship game. Overall he went 7 - 3 in the pro league championship games he competed in.

* PB then founded a second freaking NFL team in Cincinnati and coached them into the playoffs 3 times as an expansion team.

* He also won a Big ten championship when coaching Ohio State

* But arguably his greatest coaching achievement was winning BACK TO BACK NATIONAL high school championships as coach of the Massilon Tigers!

As an aside he invented Sports Boosters and sending coaches to your opponents game to scout them.

This has to be the best run anybody's had in the "modern" era. Even though they've backed in twice (LSU rematch), the success in the BCS/Playoff is unparalleled. Given time to prepare, his teams get the job done once in. I'd be surprised if he doesn't get at least one of the next two with Tua and Harris. If he hangs around for another 5-6 years he'll end up with 7-8 titles in a 14-15 year span IMO.

And why would any sane football fan sound pleased at this?

* We don't know if the committee got it right - it's purely hypothetical.

* The SEC didn't dominate anything. What we saw tonight was the football equivalent of incest.

* The bowls are meaningless? Really?

* Okay you got it right that it's a 4 team competition but calling it a playoff is a bit much.

* If it really dosen't change until 2026 I suspect you might see some interesting developments prior to that date in college football. Why, because I can't believe even the limp wristed apparatchiks masquerading as conference commissioners will continue to participate in the charade that the college football playoffs are. But let's test my theory and grant automatic bids to Georgia & Alabama if they don't lose more than 1 game over the next couple of years.

Well said and I would agree that Saban is the best college coach of the modern era. But to many people forget the accomplishments of the old timers. You know like the guys that had to coach through world wars and such.

I don't know whether you're trolling or you actually want it to remain a 4 team playoff? I can't imagine any red blooded college football fan NOT wanting to go to an 8 or even 12 game playoff? So I have to conclude that since you can't possibly be that dumb you must be engaging in some drive by posting.

Now we're factoring world wars into who's the best coach. Good, expected nothing less.
