The face of Akron Schools are in for a Change

This is looking like the plan for Akron Public schools.

Akron might be in the near future 6 or 7 years. Go to an Academy style format for it's High schools. Those would be specialized in certain fields of study that would link up with industry and lead to jobs.

Here's how it would work 4 High schools would become 2 High schools. This would create a 2 campus format for both schools under a joint name. Kenmore-Garfield was just a precursor as to what is coming. The plan would keep North Open and combine 4 into 2.

East-Ellet would be merged and Buchtel-Firestone would be the other as they would become the Academy schools. The mascot would be selected by the board. This would bring the count to 4 high schools. The state of Ohio facilities commission would approve of this under this format. Otherwise the Akron Public schools would have to mandate 2 schools and buildings to close by that state agency.

Words of wisdom from a majority of the board and city council say that they should have built 4 new High Schools and create new names mascots and colors for all. They now know they should have taken a clue from Canton City Schools

Akron had 11 High schools and 132,000 kids in 1964-65 school year now for the 2017-18 school year 22,800 and 6 High schools
Oh and by the way ther would be new names for this

It would have been nice if they were at 4 schools. It would also be interesting to see how many kids are in Akron's school district that are homeschooling, online, or open-enrolling.

What was the population of Akron in 1964? 11 Public High Schools? That's amazing that the school age population has dropped to about 1/6 of what it was...

Sad days for Ohio's cities, all over the State except the Columbus area.

EDIT: To answer my own question: 1960 pop of Akron was 290,351 and 1970 pop was 275,425. So maybe about 282,000 in 1964... give or take.

There was 513,000 people in Summit County in 1960. And 553,000 in 1970. In 2010, there was 540,000.

So, the county hasn't shrunk considerably at all in that time. But what you see is urban blight from people fleeing to the suburbs.

Hudson: 3,933 in 1970; 22,262 in 2010
Green: 3,553 in 1990 (earliest record); 25,699 in 2010
Stow: 12,194 in 1960; 34,837 in 2010

All 3 are very well-to-do school districts now.

Yep. Funny that Barberton, I looked after, is actually smaller than in the 60s.

Follow the money.
