Portsmouth Trojans 2018-2019

The Portsmouth Trojans will feature a lot of new faces on its 2018-2019 roster. After losing 4 starters from last season, only leading scorer Matthew Fraulini, a 6-2 junior, returns. To date the Trojans have lost 2 players to football injuries, one of which may return by January. Fraulini averaged 14 PPG as a sophomore.

Right now, 3 starters are penciled in the starting lineup. MyQuel McKinley, a 6-3 SR, Miles Shipp, a 6-2 SO, and Fraulini. A 4th most likely starter will be Amare Johnson, a 5-7 FR. Johnson will be the PG, and has a very high motor and is a tenacious defender. The 5th starter will be 5-11 Danny Lattimore if he decides to play. He is currently the QB on the Trojans playoff football team. This team could be the most athletic team Portsmouth has had since its 2015 regional final squad.

The Trojans finally have some size in 6-6 SR Andrew Meadows, who has improved immensely from playing JV ball last season. He will most likely not start, but will get major minutes. Also in the rotation will be 6-1 junior Richie Bowman. Eli Johnson, a 5-9 junior, could also help off the bench.

Coach Eugene Collins begins his 10th season at PHS, which is the 3rd longest tenure in school history. Collins led the Trojans to back to back state appearances in 2011 and 2012, finishing state runnerup to Cincinnati Summit Country Day in the 2012 championship game. His overall record is 155-64, with a regional final, 3 district titles, and 5 sectional titles, in addition to his state teams.

Portsmouth will once again play in the Ohio Valley Conference, which will take up 14 games on the Trojans slate. Gallia Academy, the only D2 school in the conference, is the overwhelming favorite to win the OVC. 5 of the other schools, Ironton, Fairland, Rock Hill, Chesapeake, and South Point are D3, with Coal Grove being the only D4.

Portsmouth enters this season with an all time record of 1,450 wins, 767 losses. The Trojans have made 15 state apperances, tied for 3rd in Ohio all time, have won 16 games in the state tournament, tied for 3rd in Ohio all time, and have played in 27 state tournament games (16-11 record), 3rd in Ohio all time.

Portsmouth will open its season at Piketon vs. Southeastern Ross on Dec.1st in the Piketon Tournament.

I am really excited about how athletic these Trojans are after watching them in practice. This just might be Coach Eugene Collins' quickest team in his 10 years at PHS. Portsmouth has to replace 4 starters, and early in the season will come signs of inexperience on the court, but their athleticism alone will make them competitive, even in losses.

GO TROJANS!!!

The Trojans fared well in their first scrimmage by beating Raceland (KY) 3 out of 4 quarters. The starting lineup was 6-3 SR Myquel McKinley, 6-0 SR Daniel Lattimore, 6-2 JR Matthew Fraulini, 6-2 SO Miles Shipp, and 5-8 FR Amare Johnson at PG. Fraulini scored 30 points total, and the Trojans basically won their quarters by forcing numerous turnovers. The quickness/athleticism that was advertised in my initial post was evident against the Rams.

Portsmouth will scrimmage at Waverly on Monday vs. Waverly and Unioto.

The Trojans will open the 2018-2019 season at Piketon on Saturday, playing Southeastern Ross at 4:30.

Portsmouth's starting 5 will be:

MyQuel McKinley 6-3 SR
Daniel Lattimore 6-0 SR
Matthew Fraulini 6-2 JR.....14 PPG last season
Miles Shipp 6-2 SO
Amare Johnson 5-8 FR

Off the bench:

Chris Duff 5-11 SO
Andrew Meadows 6-6 SR
Richie Bowman 6-1 JR
Brandon Clark 6-3 JR
Gage Rhodes 6-4 JR
Eli Johnson 5-10 JR
Caden Davis 5-10 JR
Jack Workman 5-9 JR
Daryionne Bryant 6-1 FR
Drew Roe 5-9 FR

The Trojans will be going for their 9th winning season in the last 10 years. The last 3 seasons have produced identical 15-7 regular season records, ending overall in 16-8, 17-8, and 16-8, with a sectional title in 2017. It was Portsmouth's 64th sectional title in school history.

Portsmouth opened its 2018-2019 season with a 61-52 win over the Southeastern Ross Panthers Saturday afternoon at Piketon HS. Matthew Fraulini led the Trojans with 22 points, while Danny Lattimore pitched in 20. Miles Shipp added 12, MyQuel McKinley added 6, and freshman Amare Johnson made a FT. The Trojans quickness forced a number of Southeastern turnovers. The Panthers have a nice team with a couple of good outside shooters. Their PG Ruby is a solid player who led them in scoring with 17.

Portsmouth will play Franklin Furnace Green in the Shawnee Classic on Wednesday at PHS. Then the Trojans play Thursday vs. Huntington St.Joe at PHS.

GO TROJANS!!!

Portsmouth defeated Franklin Furnace Green 78-46 last Wednesday at PHS. The Trojans placed 4 players in double figures, led by 6-2 junior Matthew Fraulini with 22 points. The Trojans outscored the Bobcats by 20 points in the final 2 quarters to pull away and boost their record to 2-0.

Last Thursday, Portsmouth defeated Huntington(WV) St.Joe 73-42 at PHS. Matthew Fraulini led the Trojans in scoring for the 3rd consecutive game with 28 points, including a slam dunk. Miles Shipp pulled down 10 rebounds in only 3 quarters of action. Coach Eugene Collins benched the starting 5 at the start of the 4th quarter to let the bench get some minutes. The Trojans outscored the Irish 37-6 in the middle 2 quarters for the win. Portsmouth is now 3-0 on the season, and will travel to Coal Grove on Tuesday. Coal Grove has beaten the Trojans 3 of the last 4 games between the two. PHS hasn't been 4-0 since the 2015 season, when the Trojans went 20-7 and finished regional runnerup to Columbus Eastmoor Academy.

Matthew Fraulini is averaging 24 PPG through 3 games.

The Trojans suffered their first defeat of the season at Coal Grove on Tuesday by a score of 66-54. The Hornets led 18-10 after 1 quarter, and Portsmouth had to play catch up the whole night. At the half, CG went into the locker room with a 40-26 lead. The Hornets upped their lead to 47-30, then the Trojans started a spirited comeback, cutting the deficit to 56-50 with 4 minutes to play. But it proved to be too much to overcome, as CG outscored PHS 10-4 the rest of the way. Matthew Fraulini led the Trojans with over 20 points for the 4th game in a row, but Portsmouth did not have scoring balance, as in the first 3 games. The Trojans especially going forward will have to find more scoring from the perimeter, as Fraulini is the only threat from the arc. As a result, zone defenses have given PHS trouble.

PHS did force 18 turnovers, and outrebounded the Hornets 36-33, but the Trojans committed 24 turnovers of their own which proved to be their undoing. Coal Grove has now won 4 of the last 5 games between the two.

Portsmouth (3-1) will host South Point on Friday. The Pointers are coming off a win over Chesapeake. The Portsmouth JV upped their record to 2-0 win a win over CG. That win surpasses the JV's win total from last season (1-21 record).

Portsmouth used a spirited second half rally to edge the South Point Pointers 47-45 last night at PHS. The Trojans (4-1) were down 29-20 at the half, but fought back to within 6 points at the end of the 3rd quarter. In the final 8 minutes, PHS caused several critical turnovers by SP which led to some fast break baskets. With Portsmouth leading 45-42, the Trojans allowed the Pointers 2 offensive rebounds, and on their 3rd shot of the possession, knocked down a 3 to tie the game at 45. MyQuel McKinley proved to be the hero of the day for PHS, as he scored a put back basket with just 4 seconds to play for the winning points.

McKinley led Portsmouth with 19 points, while sophomore Miles Shipp tossed in 18 to go along with double digit rebounds, which is becoming commonplace for him. Matthew Fraulini only scored 3 points as SP was determined to make someone else beat them. Nevertheless, Fraulini played a good all around game despite SP's lock down defense. He is still averaging 20 PPG.

The Trojans are 1-1 in OVC play.

Portsmouth will travel to Western Pike on Wednesday, and will play at Portsmouth West next Saturday.

Portsmouth fell to 4-2 on the season with a tough 64-61 loss to the Western Pike Indians at WHS. The game was close all the way, with PHS having a 5 point lead 41-36 in the 3rd quarter. Western quickly tied the game at 41, then both teams traded baskets virtually to the end of the game. With the score 62-61, Western missed 2 FT's, but the Trojans' potential game winning shot missed its mark, and WHS sealed the game with 2 FT's. 1,000 point scorer Brewster for the Indians made some key plays down the stretch.

Portsmouth's lack of perimeter offense really hurt them last night. Matthew Fraulini is the Trojans only consistent threat from outside. After the 1st quarter the Indians shadowed him the rest of the night. Still, he scored 19 points, while Danny Lattimore added 17, and MyQuel McKinley chipped in 12.

The Trojans will try to get their 5th win of the season on Saturday as they travel to Portsmouth West.

Portsmouth West jumped to an 18-6 lead and was never threatened as they defeated the Trojans 61-47 at PWHS. At one point West had a 20 point lead. West guarded Portsmouth's leading scorer, Matthew Fraulini, close all night, making it difficult for him to get any open looks. The rest of the team could not provide any outside shooting support to help him out, and as a result the Trojans couldn't win the game with just layups. Portsmouth also allowed West hit 9 three pointers, which was the difference in the game. Their closeout defense was not good.

Opposing coaches are simply trying to take Fraulini out of the game scoring wise, because there just isn't enough scoring support elsewhere to help him out. Going forward, that is most likely the game plan of every team the Trojans will face. Western Pike and West Portsmouth made it work. With the bulk of the OVC schedule ahead, and with Wheelersburg just a week away, things look gloomy for Portsmouth. PHS lost 4 starters from a year ago, but what happened at West last Saturday was inexcusable. They just didn't compete against a team that had been struggling themselves.

Jesse Johnson had an outstanding game for West with 22 points. Portsmouth(4-3) will play Minford at home on Saturday, then will play at Chesapeake next Friday before entertaining the undefeated Wheelersburg Pirates the following night.

Scoring totals against West were unavailable. GO TROJANS!!!

Portsmouth outscored the Minford Falcons 34-18 after halftime en route to a 63-47 win at PHS. Matthew Fraulini led the Trojans (5-3) with 22 points, while Danny Lattimore scored 21, with Miles Shipp adding 12. PHS's aggressive defense was the difference in the 2nd half.

Portsmouth will play at Chesapeake next Friday, then entertain undefeated Wheelersburg on Saturday.

Portsmouth fell to 5-4 after a 62-52 loss to the Chesapeake Panthers last night at CHS. The Trojans jumped to a 10-0 lead and 20-8 after 1 quarter, but turnovers doomed the Trojans the rest of the way. Matthew Fraulini led Portsmouth in scoring, but official totals were unavailable.

Portsmouth battled undefeated Wheelersburg hard, but in the end the Pirates downed the Trojans 70-57 at PHS. The Trojans (5-5) were down double digits early, and at halftime trailed 33-25. Portsmouth coach Eugene Collins had his kids come out in a full court press, and it jump started a comeback that saw PHS tie the game at 40 late in the 3rd quarter. But the Pirates responded with a surge of their own, and going into the final 8 minutes, the Burg led 50-42. Portsmouth did cut the lead to 8 again early in the 4th, but the Pirates once again answered, pushing the lead to 16. I think fatigue finally set in for the Trojans with the effort of trying to keep pace with the Pirates. WHS's outside shooting was the difference. Tanner Holden, 6-6 senior for the Burg, had 26 points, mostly on shots in the paint and at the FT line.

Still, a great effort vs. a very good Wheelersburg Pirate team, which certainly has the look of a top 10 D3 team in Ohio. If the Trojans can bottle this effort and carry it with them to the rest of their schedule, good things will happen. The Pirates just might be the best team in the SE district, regardless of division.

Portsmouth leads the overall series 23-19, and 5-4 in tournament play. PHS has won 11 of the last 14 between the two, but the Pirates have a 2 game winning streak.

Matthew Fraulini led PHS with 23 points, while Miles Shipp and Danny Lattimore had double figures as well. At one point in the game, the Trojans had 2 freshmen and a sophomore on the court. Wheelersburg starts 4 seniors.

Portsmouth travels to Fairland on Tuesday, then comes home for Rock Hill on Friday.

Portsmouth (5-6) fell behind 18-7, and scored only 13 points in the first half in a lackluster 49-30 loss to the Fairland Dragons. Danny Lattimore led PHS with 13 points. The Trojans' continued lack of outside shooting has really hurt Portsmouth offensively. Matthew Fraulini is the Trojans only outside threat, and opposing coaches have been game planning to take him out of the game and make others beat them. Last night, that game plan by Dragons coach Nathan Speed worked to perfection, as PHS struggled to put the ball in the basket all night. Portsmouth simply died a slow death last night, as the Dragons competely controlled tempo.

The Trojans must find some perimeter shooting other than Fraulini is they are going to win any games the rest of the season. PHS is 0-3 on the road in the OVC, with games left at Ironton, Gallia Academy, South Point, and Rock Hill. The only OVC win was a 47-45 win at home vs. South Point. Portsmouth hasn't had a losing season since 2013, when they went 10-12 after losing 11 of 12 players from their D3 state runnerup team. Since that 2013 season, the Trojans have gone 88-36.

6-2 junior Matthew Fraulini broke the all time single game scoring record in Trojan history, as he tallied 46 points as the Trojans beat Rock Hill 80-61. Fraulini surpassed Jayllen Carter's 44 point mark which he set in the 2012-2013 season vs. Jackson. Carter's total passed Dion McKinley's 42 points in 2012 vs. Logan. McKinley's mark broke Larry Hisle's 41 points which was set in 1965 vs. Wilmington.

Portsmouth improved to 6-6 on the season, and 2-3 in the OVC. Portsmouth will entertain Gallia Academy on Tuesday, followed by a home game with Ironton next Friday. Ironton is in first place in the OVC.

Portsmouth last night vs. Rock Hill started 2 freshmen and a sophomore.

Gallia Academy jumped to a 10-2 lead and cruised to a 62-44 win over the Trojans last night at PHS. Despite the loss of 7-1 center Zach Loveday (transferred to Huntington Prep last week), the Blue Devils dominated the game. Portsmouth started 2 freshman and a sophomore, while Gallia started 4 seniors. Their experience advantage over Portsmouth showed. The Trojans once again struggled in their half court offense with their serious lack of outside shooting ability. Matthew Fraulini and Miles Shipp led PHS with 9 points.

Portsmouth is now 6-7 on the season, and 2-4 in the OVC. Things don't get any easier for the Trojans as Ironton comes to PHS on Friday. PHS travels to South Webster on Saturday, and then come home for Coal Grove on Tuesday.

Ironton jumped to a 24-10 lead, and pulled away in the 2nd half as they defeated a scrappy Portsmouth team 73-56. The Trojans did rally to a 33-29 deficit at halftime, but the Fighting Tigers had too much offense for PHS. Ethan Wilson of Ironton scored his 1,000 point and led IHS with 26 points. Matthew Fraulini led Portsmouth (6-8) with 20 points. The Trojans are now 2-5 in the OVC, in 7th place out of 8 teams.

Portsmouth travels to South Webster this afternoon in a game moved up to a 3 PM start for the JV contest.

Portsmouth's season continued to go in a downward spiral, as the South Webster Jeeps defeated the Trojans 68-54 at SWHS. The Jeeps had a big 2nd half to pull away from PHS, and the Trojans couldn't mount any sort of rally. Once again, the lack of outside shooting really hurt Portsmouth, and that has been the trend all season. PHS falls to 6-9 on the season. Danny Lattimore led Portsmouth with 15 points.

Portsmouth hasn't had a losing season since 2013, when the Trojans went 10-13 after losing all but 1 player from its 2012 D3 state runnerup team. PHS hasn't failed to win at least 10 games since the 2008 season. With only 7 games left, with 4 OVC games on the road (Ironton, Gallia Academy, South Point, and Rock Hill), and an 0-3 record on the road in the conference, the Trojans will be hard pressed to win 10 games in the regular season. Ironton and Gallia Academy have already won handily at PHS.

Portsmouth is staring at an #8 or #9 seed in the Waverly sectional, which would be their lowest seed ever.

The Coal Grove Hornets continued their dominance of Portsmouth as they drubbed the Trojans 64-33 at PHS. CG jumped to a 12-4 lead, and PHS never threatened. The Hornets have won 5 of the last 6 vs. the Trojans. Matthew Fraulini led Portsmouth with 19 points. The Trojans are 6-10 overall and 2-6 in the OVC. The Trojans have been plagued by a severe lack of outside shooting and turnovers. In the last month they have been getting beaten by double digits routinely.

Portsmouth travels to South Point on Friday.

Portsmouth (6-11) played much more respectable basketball despite a 57-56 loss at South Point on Friday night. The Trojans' previous week had been a disaster, losing 4 games by a total of 80 points. Last night, though, they took the Pointers to the buzzer. SP's Austin Webb made the winning FT with 6 seconds to play. A last shot by the Trojans' Danny Lattimore missed its mark. Still, PHS played much better at both ends of the court, and made 6 three pointers by 3 different players. South Point is the only team to beat OVC leading Fairland. At one point in the game, Portsmouth had 2 freshmen and a sophomore on the court.

Portsmouth is now 2-7 in OVC play, and will play 2 conference games at home, on Tuesday vs. Chesapeake and Friday vs. Fairland on Senior Night.

Portsmouth once again had serious offensive problems as they were routed by the Chesapeake Panthers 60-31 at PHS. The Trojans only lost at Chesapeake 62-52 earlier in the month, but this time around never mounted a challenge. PHS fell behind 11-0 and the game was essentially over. With a minute to play, the Trojans only had 25 points.

Portsmouth is now 6-12 overall and 2-8 in the OVC. This Trojan team could tie the 1962 Portsmouth team with the second most losses if they don't win another game. That 1962 squad went 1-17 after winning the 1961 Class AA state title. The 2006 Trojans went 6-16. In 5 home game losses in January, vs. Chesapeake, Coal Grove, Ironton, Gallia Academy, and Wheelersburg, PHS has averaged a meager 44 PPG while losing by an average of 21 PPG.

Portsmouth lacks shooters, with the exception of Matthew Fraulini. Going forward into next season, the coaching staff has got to emphasize getting shooting back into the program. Ballhandling is a concern also, but if the shooting woes are not fixed by the 2019-2020 season, the Trojans will find themselves back in the same situation, a losing season and trying to stay out of last place in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Portsmouth's game with Fairland was postponed to 2/12 because of the weather. The Trojans will play at Rock Hill on Tuesday. The Trojans are 7th in the OVC, while the Redmen are 8th. RH hasn't won a conference game this season, while PHS is 2-8.

Portsmouth won its first game since the middle of January with a 59-50 win at Rock Hill. The Trojans broke open a close game in the final 2 minutes. Danny Lattimore led PHS with 24 points, while Miles Shipp added 12. The Trojans made 7 three pointers.

Portsmouth coach Eugene Collins said before the game that there would be some changes, and there were quite a few. 3 freshmen and 3 sophomores all saw playing time, with freshman Drew Roe and sophomore Miles Shipp starting.

The Trojans are 7-12 overall, and 3-8 in the OVC, while Rock Hill is still winless in the conference. Portsmouth could be looking at a sectional seed from most likely #8-#10, with Adena, Western Pike, and North Adams all vying for the #1 seed. Portsmouth lost at Western earlier in the season 64-61.

Portsmouth had a lackluster night offensively vs. Gallia Academy Friday night, and the end result was a rather easy 55-37 win by the Blue Devils. The Trojans (7-13 overall, 3-9 in the OVC), fell behind 9-0 and trailed by as many as 17. PHS then mustered a spirited rally to cut the GAHS lead to 7 in the 4th quarter. But the offense ran out of steam, and the Blue Devils pulled away again. Matthew Fraulini led Portsmouth with 15 points. PHS still leads the overall series 41-16.

Once again, the Trojans featured 3 freshmen and 3 sophomores with playing time. This experience for these kids should prove dividends for the 2019-2020 season.

The Portsmouth JV lost but has a record of 10-9, which is a big improvement over the 1-21 disaster from a year ago.

Portsmouth#8 will play Portsmouth West#9 in the first round of sectional play at Waverly HS on Monday, Feb. 18 at 6:15 PM. The Trojans lost to the Senators in December 61-47 at WPHS in one of PHS's worst games of the year. Jesse Johnson of West had 22 points.

The Trojans will be playing for the 65th sectional championship in school history, with the last title being in 2017. Portsmouth went on to lose in the district semifinal to South Point 59-42.

Portsmouth's offense struggled mightily again in a 60-35 loss to the Fairland Dragons. Danny Lattimore led PHS with 18 points, but there wasn't enough offense to even remotely threaten the Dragons. It was Portsmouth's 5th game this season in which they have scored 37 points or less. Fairland clinched the OVC title with the win, a season after they lost their top 6 players from a year ago.

The Trojans will play at Ironton on Friday to end the regular season. The Tigers defeated Portsmouth 73-56 earlier.

Portsmouth only played its starting 5 for the 1st quarter only as Ironton crushed the Trojans 69-24. It was the largest margin of loss by PHS to Ironton. The Fighting Tigers played most of their starters for the first 3 quarters. Jayllen Thomas and Richie Bowman led PHS with 5 points apiece.

Portsmouth ends the regular season with a 7-15 mark. Only 8 other Trojan teams in history have lost at least 15 games in the regular season, dating back to 1913. The 1946, 1958, 1962, 1996, and 2005 teams all lost 15 games, and the 1993 and 2006 teams lost 16. The record for most losses is the 1962 team, which lost 17 games, a year after PHS won the BIG school(Class AA) state title in 1961.

It was also the 6th time this season that Portsmouth scored 37 points or less, and not surprisingly went 0-6 in those games. Portsmouth lost by at least 29 points in 4 games this season; Coal Grove 64-33, Chesapeake 60-31, Fairland 60-35 (all home games), and Ironton last night 69-24.

Portsmouth will play Portsmouth West at Waverly on Monday in the D3 sectional tournament. West has lost 10 straight games (6-16). If PHS were to win, they would play #1 seed Adena on Friday at 6:00 PM.

Portsmouth's MyQuel McKinley made a 5 foot jumper in the middle of the lane at the buzzer to give the Trojans a 47-46 win over Portsmouth West in the first round of the D3 Waverly sectional tournament. The Trojans jumped to a quick 5-0 lead, but the Senators controlled the game throughout and had a 6 point lead with 3 minutes to play. For offensively challenged Portsmouth, it seemed like a 10 point lead.

West, though, really hurt themselves at the FT line, going 10-16 in the 4th quarter, and in the end that cost them the game. The Trojans trailed 46-45 with 8 seconds to go after PHS's Matthew Fraulini made 1 of 2 FT's. West was called for an offensive foul on the inbounds play, a controversial call at that, but it gave Portsmouth a last chance for the win. The Trojans inbounded the ball, made a couple of passes, one to McKinley, and he made the winning shot.

Coach Eugene Collins' defensive game plan was the difference for PHS. He had the Trojans playing 95% man to man, and despite foul trouble, it kept Portsmouth in the game. The man to man D allowed the Trojans to use their quickness, which in turn created some critical turnovers by West late.

Portsmouth (8-15) moves on to play #1 seed Adena at Waverly HS at 6:00 PM Friday. The Trojans will have to up their game if they are going to win the sectional championship. PHS will be in the rare role of being a decided underdog.

This Portsmouth team is the 9th team to lose at least 15 games in a season(dating back from 1913). Of those 9, four have lost 16 games or more. The 2007 Trojans have the distinction of holding the all time loss record, going 4-18. The 1962 Trojans went 1-17 for the 2nd most losses in PHS history.
