Basketball is just around the corner. Who has high hopes for the upcoming season? I know Brookville has a lot returning, but will it be enough to dethrone co-champs Franklin and Bellbrook?

My prediction
1: Franklin
2: Bellbrook
3: Brookville
4: Oakwood
5: Valley View
6: Monroe
7: Eaton
Monroe will not have much this year again they have no size speed or consistent shooting. I've been proven wrong before but this is a make or break year for Kenny Molz. 12-11, 9-14, 5-18 are his records during his Monroe tenure. He is a bright young coach but the lack of talent we have can only get you so far.

Where has the talent gone in Eaton? It seems that the only sports that are having any success is the Wrestling and Baseball Teams. Basketball and Football have been on a slide since 2012.They had some very good years and it seems the talent pool has dwindled. Is there anything coming up thru the Jr. Hi ranks??

My prediction
1: Brookville ---just seem to have a lot coming back
2: Franklin ---lost too much for me to pick in 1st.
3: Bellbrook--- almost a lock for me to come in 3rd in the division no higher no lower.

Here is where it gets unpredictable. I don't think any of these teams have a chance for top 3 and all could end up in the cellar.

4: Monroe--- don't have much coming back but it could be more then the bottom 3 teams. Monroe did lose probably a dozen games last year by 5 or less including Franklin 2x
5: Valley View---Seem to have lost a lot
6: Oakwood---Twins are gone this will hurt them. Only seem to have Rubin and he can be shut down at times but man he is a pure shooter with range.
7: Eaton---They return a lot of Varsity experience but with them only getting 1 win last year it's hard to tell how much this is going to help them. They could possibly finish 4th in the division but I see them coming in 5th thru 7th.

I agree this could be it for Kenny Molz. I heard several kids already quit including a starter from last year that just dont care for him much. I think he does a lot of things right that other programs don't with the off season its just an issue of keeping the kids on the court and wanting them to play for you.
Could be another tuff year for them. I think they can stay in games they just have to find a way to win them this season. Definitely lacking all the things you said however. Assuming no one else quits they should have Osterman, Poindexter, Zumbiel back that started last season. These 3 and hopes of others need to find a way to score.

Keep hearing a lot about Brookville, I know Franklin will be very junior heavy with only one senior, so they will be young. That junior class never lost a game 7-9 I think they lost 2 or 3 times last year on JV so they know how to win, we will find out if they can do it on the big stage.

I think the 'Cats could be better because they could be very deep and they have several guys that can fill it from 3.

I guess the SWBL is going to be really down because Alter scrimmage Bellbrook and Wayne in the summer and the Eagles got crushed by Alter and Wayne.

Any scrimmage results, and I wouldn't expect Bellbrook to to be able to play with Wayne and Alter, even on their best years it probably isn't enough, those are the best D1 school in the area and the best private school in the area in basketball.

I think Bellbrook takes the crown this year. They have Caleb Scott who has been called "Ohio's Steve Kerr" by some locals

I agree and you can always tell this in tournament play.

Monroe has another player that is not playing this year. He started every game as a Freshman but no longer playing basketball??? They really don't have but a few starters back from last year when they thought they would have 4.

I agree with what most of you are saying and that the Southwestern Division will come down to Franklin, Brookville or Bellbrook.

In the Buckeye Division, I look for Madison to run away with things this year. They return basically their entire team. They have arguably the best player in the league in Whisman, and have a lot of size, strength and experience.

On the league website Franklin opens up at Brookville, kinda of crazy the SWBL starts their season night 1, and maybe the two favorites face off right off the bat, and don't play again until late February. I don't think a lot of leagues have a league game right off the bat and let them play a non conference opponent first.

Madison's run in football could possibly effect their run in basketball. If they have any tough league games early in the season and the football team keeps moving forward, their starting point guard and best post player will be missing. They still might be good enough to win since they are pretty deep, but a couple of early losses could make the Buckeye division more eventful late in the season.

Speaking of Monroe, the rumor mill says it is going to be tough year. Numbers are way down and a couple of starters have quit the team.

Their first game is TCN on December 1st, if they are still in the football playoffs, that game will likely be cancelled. Their first league game will be Waynesville on Dec. 7th. If Madison makes it to the State Championship game they will have 4 days to prepare. Beings that these boys are great athletes, I doubt they need a ton of practice to come in and contribute with little practice. They may not be in mid-season form, but they will still be good.

Is Franklin still a division 1 team playing in a strictly division 2/3 league?

Out of curiosity I looked up the information on this, and I did find that Franklin is the only D1 school in the conference. Right now in the Southwestern Division you have Franklin as D1. You have Bellbrook, Oakwood, Monroe, Valley View and Eaton as D2. Then Brookville is D3.

One crazy thing is Franklin's enrollment number for boys basketball is 362 and Brookville's number is 167. We are talking about these 2 schools as potentially being the top 2 in the league and Franklin is more than twice the size in terms of boys in the school.

I think that is Franklin's competitive balance number, they are the smallest D1 team in the state unfortunately. How about being the smallest in the D1 and being in the same region as Mason who has 1367, literally 1000 more boys than you do!

Franklin has an enrollment of 352 with a competitive balance of 10. Giving them a 362 number and places them in Division 1. Trotwood-Madison has an enrollment of 361 with a competitive balance of 0, giving them a number of 361 and they are in Division 2. That's pretty crazy, and that's how close Franklin is to being D2.

This list is not 100% correct. I know of at least one school who is not on this list so bet there are more.

I thought I would jump into this conversation I am pumped for the season as football was a disappointment and ready for hoops. Franklin has had a heck of a run (maybe best in league history)but it is over! They are too young and don't have the guys to capture their 8th in a row. Kudos to them for maintaining it after Kennard left. I think Brookville is the team to beat with Monroe and Bellbrook a close second. Franklin and Oakwood will follow. Oakwood has one of the top players in the junior class in Ruben returning for them so they will always have a chance. He was very good against us last year. Valley View and Eaton have new coaches so will be hard to tell about them. I think this is the year that the Hornets have been waiting on. Our guys have been in the heat of the battle and should be ready to get over the hump this year! Go Hornets!

Kinda hope so. Might make for more competitive season. It looks like Milton Union is 1-23 in the league the last two years. Madison should go undefeated so anything could shake out 2 thru 7.

It looks Carlisle’s leading returning scorer did indeed transfer out. Not listed in the article.
