Foles is in limbo because of the uncertain timetable regarding Wentz' return from knee surgery. Some speculate he'll be back by training camp while others have suggested that it would be stretching it to have him back by opening week. Either way, Foles will be under the control of the Eagles. If he's on the roster by February 2019, he'll have the option to become a free agent or take a $3M roster bonus on top of his $4M salary. He'll command much more than that, the Eagles know it and, if Wentz returns to form, he'll be fodder for a trade. But the Browns don't have that luxury of waiting.

I much prefer a proven commodity to a bridge QB to mentor a rookie. But I highly doubt the Browns are even on Cousins' radar. I don't think the Browns are going to have any choice but to go the bridge QB and cross their fingers - once again - that they've drafted a franchise quarterback.

Here's your deal. Everybody gets together and McCarron withdraws his grievance/appeal to be a UFA in return for the Bengals agreeing to trade him to the Browns and the Browns signing him to a 2 or 3 year deal. McCarron get a new contract, a raise and a chance to start; the Browns get their bridge QB; and the Bengals get something for a guy an arbitrator might well deem a UFA.

Unfortunately, after the last fiasco, the Browns probably aren't getting a return call from the Bengals. I also doubt Dorsey would give up the 2nd rounder that was at the center of the deal that fell through.

Guess we wait until next week.

I think the Bengals pick up this time because Sashi Brown isn't on the other end.

Why would McCarron agree to go from a back-up for the Bengals to a bridge/mentor QB for the Browns? Why would the Browns trade for that when there are a bunch of FAs available? And why would the Browns treat a 27 year-old QB as a bridge to begin with?

The interest in McCarron is puzzling. Not much evidence he's good.

He might not have any other choice ... which is better, bridge starter or backup? He might not have another options to start.

Second, he is going to be a free agent ... whether it is restricted or unrestricted is still not decided ... they have might trade for him, but only if it is cheap.

Third, they would treat him as a bridge because he could come cheaper than other option and he is really just a quality backup and not really a starting QB.

If he's a competitor, he would want to be a starter. He's not moving ahead of Dalton on the depth chart. Also, he apparently has a good relationship with Hue. Maybe the Browns like him more than the free agents out there. He'd be a bridge as the QB they would likely pick with the first pick of the draft likely has a brighter future than a 5th rounder and career backup to this point.

Just to clarify, I was laying out an improbable scenario and I am not sold on McCarron.

Todd McShay's newest mock has the Browns taking Darnold at 1 and Barkley at 4.

This

And that^ said, this fact is why a 27 yr old would be willing to play bridge QB. It's likely going to be his only sure opportunity to start for a year and showcase his talents, whatever they may be....

Was someone else taking Fitzpatrick at 2 or 3 ?

I sure hope someone trades up and gets him off the board before 4

I still like the idea of taking their QB of choice at #1 and then selling the #4 pick to either Denver or Jets and still getting Fitzpatrick (and more) then drafting Penny in the 2nd round and/or trading up a few spots into the first to get CB Josh Jackson from Iowa. From that point draft BPA.

thus getting
QB
Fitzpatrick FS
Jackson CB
Penny RB ... with the first 4 picks

this would give the Browns a top 10 D (IMO)

Denver has no incentive to move from 5 to 4 if the Browns already have their QB at one as they know the Browns aren't going QB at 4, but maybe the Jets take the opportunity to move ahead of the Broncos to get the QB they want.

That is what you sell ... to either, if you want your QB, then you need this pick, because we are trading it to you or the other ... if Denver does not want to get jumped they will trade ... all this is assuming neither gets their QB as a FA ... this is why I want Cousins to go to Arizona.

Sure. He's also a guy Bill Belichick apparently wanted to replace Brady and for whom the 49ers traded a 2nd rounder, which was unanimously considered a huge steal.

It's unusual a player like Garoppolo becomes available; typically it's the old vet who is sent to out to pasture. This may be a sign that we're entering a period of readjustment in the league in terms of how teams approach the QB position once they have a quality player. 34-35 has been seen as the expiration age for a QB, but that may no longer be case due to all of the protections the position has been given over the past decade or so. It may be that guys like Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Carson Palmer, etc. who play at a high level into their late 30s and early 40s, are just the first wave of what may be commonplace in the future. It is, afterall, a position that, if the player avoids serious injury from the shoulders up, because of it's stationary nature allows for an extended career second only to kicker.

I guess his contract is just a sign of the times. I'm still a little surprised how long they took to get him in the lineup after the trade.

He also had all the leverage. It's not like the 49ers were going to spend a 2nd rounder an then let him hit FA.
