Measuring Success in the Akron City Series

This post is for all the Haters out there that want to degrade coaches like Haslem(North)and Boyd (Garfield-Kenmore). Let me say first and foremost that both of these coaches are men of Character. They have the best interest of the kids at heart and are doing everything they can to build a program. Coaching in APS is one of the hardest jobs in the world, unless you are at a top tier school. Kids these days have too many distractions and it is very hard to get any commitment. In addition, the pool of students is smaller than ever before, so finding 22 kids that are actually playable is very difficult as well. Before any of you haters say anything bad about the coaches that are putting countless hours in with kids, you should try and walk a mile in their shoes.

A coaches success should be measured by the following, IMO:
1. IS the coach a role model for the kids?
2. Does the coach hold his kids accountable on and off the field?
3. Does the team, and the coach, show character and sportsmanship at all times.
4. Does the team show improvement (not necessarily in # of wins and losses) from week to week and year to year?
5. Does the team win the games it should? Is the team competitive?

Everyone want the coaches job on friday nights, but no one wants the job Saturday-Thursday, nor January- July.

So please tell me how you measure success?

Great post. Unfortunately coaches are now evaluated on:

1. Do they win?
2. How many/which parents complain about him?

Making kids accountable for their actions usually leads to angry parents. This is not good for coaches in the long run.

Sad.

The Akron City Series has a rich history dating back to 1911, when Central and South were its ony members. The caliber of football played in the 1940's, 50's, and 60's, when the league had 8 and for a short time 9 members, was as good as anywhere in the state. Kids came out in huge numbers, to play for their neighborhood schools. Akron was booming and the Friday night double headers at the Rubber Bowl drew huge crowds. The Turkey Day title game could draw as many as 20,000. Fans from all the factory towns, from Y-Town, Toledo, Dayton, Canton and many more, remember these great days. Those days are gone, and the once small schools on the edge of town, are large suburbs with beautiful facilities. As schools consolidate, kids have to travel farther, so just getting numbers to field a quality team, are getting harder. So I tip my hat to both these gentlemen, and any others who give their time, and it is a lot of time, to these under funded, slowly disappearing City schools.

Sonil Haslem (North) and Kemp Boyd (Kenmore-Garfield) are both high character men who are good leaders of men. Not all successful programs are judged on wins and losses. The City Series is blessed with many quality coaches Marques Hayes-Akron East, Ricky Powers-Akron Buchtel, Eric Mitchel-Akron Firestone, Chuck Shuman-Akron Ellet. 4040 is correct when noting the challenges these coaches face on daily basis. Sometimes, success is giving kids a male role model and giving them a wholesome activity that keeps them off of the streets.

Not sure where this is stemming from. Haven't seen much "hate" on these message boards directed towards these two guys.

I saw someone bash the hire of Kemp Boyd to Garfield-Kenmore and felt I needed to stand up for him. I also saw someone say negative things about Sonil in the past. Finally, some people didn't like the hire of Shuman at Ellet, a man that has put his time in and been very loyal to the Ellet community, and while I didnt mention this in the post, I think he is a man of High Character as well.

I agree with you about all these coaches.
With the Ellet hire, the issue wasn't with Shuman as a person and coach but rather the opportunity for a young, talented guy to secure the position for years to come...and the opportunity was there.

Orange, I hear you that some people in Ellet may have wanted a young coach, but I think Shuman deserves the chance, I know for a fact that in some years Yost put the handcuffs on him offensively. The job will probably be open in 3-5 years, and Ellet can hire a young man then.
