Brush Arcs-Underrated

Why can't my beloved Brush Arcs get the love they deserve? They are stuck behind Lorain and SVSM in the cleveland.com poll and they are an undefeated D1 team with a win over St. Edward. If they can defeat Spire this week will you all finally believe in my Arcs?

be careful what you wish for .... if I were you im happy with the underdog role .... you still need to win the District title before full respect is deserved ... and Lorain was a Final Four D1 team last year while St V is defending D2 state champs

I wouldn't say being ranked #3 in cleveland.com makes Brush underrated. If they were outside the top 5, then you could say they are. Brush is good no doubt, but like Bertha said, they need to do it in the postseason if they want to earn respect. Lorain is final 4 from last year and St. V is defending D2 champ. That's why they are ranked ahead of Brush. I would say Lorain and Brush are interchangeable at this point. Lorain's only loss is to St V, and St. V's losses are against SPIRE and Moeller (defending state champs). If Brush beats SPIRE then they deserve #1 no doubt (don't think it's happening). But to say that no one believes in Brush is a ridiculous statement.

Brush is ranked #1 in NEO in at least a couple other polls. Nobody is underrating them. The lack of postseason success probably hurts them some. Brush hasnít been able to get out of the district. I was surprised they were stuck at 3 on Cleveland.com, but itís not a big deal.

Their conference schedule is pretty weak. They have to take full advantage of the times they play some big dogs. Already took care of business against Eds. Spire will be interesting.

I wish Brush well against Spire. STVM tried to slow the game down and actually made a game of it for almost 3 quarters. Unfortunately, they had to play the 4th quarter! Any way, Spire is really good. They have a PG who is a Michigan State recruit who is a heckuva player. And they have another 6'9" forward who the Irish didn't have an answer for. I don't know much about Brush this year (but I'm learning!), and I hope they can pull this one out. If so, that'll be a signature win. Good luck!

People keep talking about Ball - but that squad is loaded. They have good guards and athletic bigs that run the floor and finish in dramatic fashion. Most teams dont match up very well with them. That being said they are playing out of state teams - just not teams like Montverde, Oak Hill, etc. I would love to see how they stack up against the teams ranked in USA Today.

I think if any area team can beat them is going to be Ed's, not because they are better then Brush - it's because Ed's might be the hardest gym in NE Ohio to win in. The students make the atmosphere deafening. I expect the Brush game to end up similar to the SVSM final.

Brush head coach Chet Mason joined me on my podcast yesterday. Chet is doing a great job building the Brush program.

21 point loss for Brush tonight and the game wasn’t close after half. Now that we can compare a common opponent, St V showed that they are still better than Brush by keeping the score tied with spire after 3 quarters before they pulled away. I still think it’s Moeller and St V 1 and 2 in division 1, and then everyone else

SVSM also played Spire on a neutral court and Brush played them at home in a sold out gym.

Spire also had their explosive big man ejected early in the game. Had he played the whole game the margin would have been even larger.

Hopefully Brush gets out of districts so we can see them play St V in regionals. No guarantees though in that district. Any one of 5-6 teams could get out.

I had absolutely no idea my Brush Arcs had so many haters out there. They played a game last night against a great team and lost. It's basketball, that does happen from time to time. I do believe Syracuse beat Duke just the other night. Coach Mason and the team will learn from it and move on. In my opinion, Coach Mason is one of the top 3 coaches in the area along with Krizancic and Dave Wojeichowski at Harvey.

LOL stating facts doesn't make someone a hater. In Northeast Ohio at this very moment, January 16th 2019, St V is the best team and Brush and Lorain are the next best 2 (in whatever order you want to put them in). Not sure how ranking a team as a top 3 team in Northeast Ohio makes people haters. All I did was compare a common opponent. Spire was without one of their best players and steamrolled Brush at Brush. St. V played Spire on a neutral court with both teams at full strength and was tied with them at the end of 3rd quarter. That's all that was said about that. I'll be impressed with Brush if they get out of districts this year, beating any combo of Mentor, Cleveland Hts, Solon, etc on the way there. Once they earn respect, then you can call everyone a "hater." Such an uneducated term.

Not sure anybody has hated on Brush. Not saying they are the best when they are still unproven is not hating. Being ranked 3 in this area right now is very respectful. Brush has the chance to earn the respect they want but it starts with getting out of districts.

You are really reaching for an "us against the world" point of view here, aren't you!?! It doesn't seem to me that anyone is hating on the Arcs. And a 21-point loss to Spire is nothing to hang your head about! Brush has an excellent team and it'll be fun to see them perform throughout the rest of the year.

Brush got to experience what playing top flight competition looks like last night. Many area schools make it a point to travel outside the state to challenge themselves against elite national teams - Brush got to do it without leaving Lyndhurst. The experience along with this weekends trip should provide valuable lessons for a team looking to advance past districts.

Nobody is hating on Brush. They are very good this year and are the favorite to get out of districts. They were more talented than Mentor last year, but lost in the district semifinals. They have had trouble getting out of Euclid. This isnít hating, it is observation and facts. Nobody should criticize Brush for losing to Spire, a crazy talented group.

As for Chet and Woj being in the top three coaches in the area - I donít think you will get a lot of backing on that. Flannery from Eds and Kwasniak from VASJ are among the usual suspects. But support your coach as you should. This could be Brushís year to make serious noise. If not now, then when?

Cardzfan - dont fall for Arcs garbage. He says stuff like Mason and Woj are great coaches and Top 3 not because he believes that because even he is not that dumb. He does it like always to take a backhanded shot at Kwasniak. He has a hatred for him so he takes any and every chance he can to paint him or VASJ in a negative fashion. I know many of us have mutual respect for our opponents and their programs - he does not. You are above him and respected on this site. He was already exposed this week by a Bene fan as being a liar - us in Viking Village have know that for a long time. Anybody who watches high school basketball knows how elite and successful Coach K, Flannery and Kwasniak are and how well their teams play and represent their schools. The coaches he mentioned are not even in the same galaxy.

Bball216, please do not try to hijack this thread and make it about you or whatever sick obsession you have with trying to self-promote your school. This thread had a legitimate discussion on how Brush has been long held as a lower tier program and you have verified that. Your constant vitriol towards the Brush is some sick obsession that I honestly think you may need some help for.

The fact that you would put Coach Babe in the conversation about the top coaches in the area is laughable. If he were coaching, say at Hawken next year, and he had similar success then I would listen. To win in D3 versus teams from rural Stark Co. every year at the regionals does not make you a great coach. If VASJ had to play the playoff path that Brush, Garfield Hts., and some of the other inner ring suburbs have to play with all the hurdles they have to clear I'd listen to your to argument. The rebuilding jobs that Coach Mason and Coach Wojeichowski have done speak volumes to their ability lead young men.

Please advise me on what either coach has won - maybe I missed something. Woj has his chance to shine as he is in the same district as Lake and VASJ. Talk to me after Brush wins a district. You are trying to compare these coaches (who have done a good job) to ones who have had substantial success over a long period of time.

Your obsession with Coach Mason is causing you to become more and more unhinged. At Brush we are behind our coach and our program. We have a great freshman in Elmore James and the future is bright (no pun intended). Our coach is working in lockstep with the administration and alumni and has never threatened to resign.

Just ask yourself if Coach Babe will still be in the top 3 if he were coaching at Hawken? Besides you cannot be considered a top 3 coach if you yourself are getting tossed out of games or your players are getting ejected. I was proud of how Coach Mason handled the minor dust-up versus Spire the other night. When I contrast that episode with what I saw with Coach Babe the other night when the Benedictine players were scoffing at the sewn on jerseys all I can do is shake my head.

If im not mistaken the incident with Benedictine was handled as well as could be expected considering the riot that could have ensued.I found no fault with Babe on that occasion. However the last Playoff game I saw at Brush March of 18' against East Tech resulted in not only Arc fans being escorted out by the Lyndhurst PO PO but they had to break up the altercation between both squads in the second half.I was half expecting a real riot in the stands and on the court that night.NO JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!! The Arc fans on the opposite side of the Scarab bench never shut up with the trash talking. So there isn't many saints at that school.I have worked Lyndurst,S.Euclid,Cle Hts,Shaker,Mayfield,Beachwood and everything in all directions for 25 years so I know the changing demographic well. Was never feeling at the Palace like I felt at Brush last year during that game.Coach Mason didn't control squat that night cuz like Babe their is only so much you can do when teens act like emotional idiots. Both coaches do a fine job and deserve praise for their work with the youth.

James - dont waste your time. Nobody has said a bad thing about Coach Mason or Brush. People have only posted facts - that is something Arc cannot process. Right on que he again has taken the chance to disparage the job Kwasniak has done at VASJ and has questioned the path the Vikings have taken to make their historic run. He has also managed to say the teams they played were somehow unworthy. I can tell you that the Richmond Heights, Warrensville Heights, St.Thomas, Youngstown Ursuline and Beachwood (2016) squads Joe's had to beat to get the state bid were very good teams.

He has again said the trash talking that took place last week against Bene was about the uniforms - even though a Bene parent debunked that publicly on the VASJ thread. Time and time again he proves what a troll he is - I'm just ecstatic many of the respected posters that contribute to this site now see it.

How have you measured the Brush rebuild. Getting one good class does not constitute a rebuild. Building a winning program that is a contender year in and year out after sucking is a rebuild. Again I ask what Brush and Coach Mason have won ? That is an easy question. Last year this very same squad underperformed and were bounced in the district semi finals. This year the hound dogs, pit bulls, hush puppies, rotwiellers or what ever Coach Mason referred to his team as after losing to Spire at home Tuesday have a legit chance to advance - will they or will they fall short like last year ? Only time will tell.

You make fun of the path VASJ has taken to reach state yet fail to mention the ridiculous conference and out of conference schedule they play. You accuse Joe's of beating up on Stark County D3 rural teams - unreal. Yet your mighty Brush Arcs take their athletic urban team (like you accuse Joe's of being) to battle such powerful conference foes like Chardon, Kenston, Riverside, Madison, Mayfield, Eastlake North and Willoughby South - whew what a gauntlet. What team is beating up on rural teams ? Remind me again.

You want respect for your Arcs have Coach Mason and the other coaches ask to join the GCC - they will have openings. You want to be considered a big time program - challenge yourself. Take on the schools twice a year that you want the respect from. You cannot play in the WRC and ask where is our respect. Be glad you are 3. Brush does have a talented group of players with very high potential. I also heard that that freshman you mention should be a very solid player. Maybe with a little luck before he graduates from Brush the Arcs will be able to hang that elusive District Champs banner from the rafters in Lyndhurst.

Bottom line is, no one has hated on Brush. If they get out of districts this year in, what might be, the toughest district regardless of division in NE Ohio, maybe the state, then they will earn respect. If they fall short again, then they have no one to blame but themselves and cannot call themselves an elite program. No point in bashing schedules, coaches, etc. Let's see what happens in March

[QUOTE=Bball216;7234659]James - Again I ask what Brush and Coach Mason have won ? That is an easy question.

Indeed this is a very easy question. Coach Mason has won life, already, way more than most of these other coaches and all of us on here.

Coach grew up under difficult circumstances in a very rough part of town where most young boys end up dead, in jail, or drop out of school.

He did the unheard of coming out of the senate league, and won Mr. Basketball as the top player in the state of ohio in 2000.

He then went on to Miami to earn his degree and later was inducted into the athletic hall of fame for the redhawks.

He played pro overseas and in the D-League for multiple year.

He hosts FREE inner city basketball clinics every year for the last decade.

He then was a volunteer (unpaid) assistant coach for another school for 1 season, and took the head job at Brush.

Now in his 4th season as a head coach, and 5th as a coach, he has greatly improved his craft.

Is he an elite coach yet? Probably not. Is he on that path, I think he might be.

To me, even if he never wins a district championship and retires after this season, he is still a huge success. He truly cares about players and making a difference in their lives.

Comparing him to Flan or Kwas is just not apples to apples.
The guys grew up on totally different circumstances, and their job requirements are totally different.

These guys were handed stacked decks at birth and are handed stacked decks based on their school. Sure, it took a lot more for success and each has worked hard and earned a good portion of their success, but you simply can't ignore the built in advantages here.

At Ed's every kid shows up to every practice, keeps his grades up, and stays out of trouble. If he doesn't, he will be replaced by the next guy who probably isn't far behind on talent.

Some of the inner ring suburb schools a coach has to do way more than coach and just having the full squad together for each practice is a challenge.

To ask what has Coach Mason won is simply absurd. He has already won and won big. If you dispute any of this, you are likely one of the folks that was born with the stacked deck. Good day.

^^^^^^^ Is this Chet's burner account?? I guess we all needed a full blown biography on the guy lmao. A lot of pretty ignorant comments about Flan and Kwas in here, assuming that because these guys didn't "grow up in the hood" that they aren't successful and "don't know the struggle." Cmon now. Grow up

Good day.
Thank you for defending our coach against these haters on here. Itís real easy for guys like Bball216 to come on here and slam our coach. Coach Mason does it the right way. He doesnít lose kids to transfer. He hasnít had patents attack him after games. He hasnít been suspended by Brush for berating the administration. He isnít threatening to leave ever few weeks for another job. What he is though, is a guy that believes in the kids and would rather be a leader to them than their best buddy and on top of it he has actually beaten St. Edward which some coaches around the area have not.
