Was very surprised to see this news this morning. Wonder what prompted it.

Not much of a surprise. Many in the community knew at the beginning of the last two seasons that he was retiring any year now. As this season was about half way through, it was pretty common knowledge.

He's coached for 17 years with two titles and a runner up. He surpassed his 300 win mark this year, and has a high school boy that he wants to see graduate in a few years and a younger daughter that he wants to enjoy watching play ball. Really good coach. He will be around as a teacher and mentor in the community for years to come.

Thank you Coach Best.

I have ties to Crestview through friends...but I didn't see this coming.

I project he gets back into coaching in the next 7 years.

This is a loss to Convoy.

I have ties embedded pretty deep in the school and I had not heard this was imminent.

It was a done deal. I think he was waiting to see this senior class off. I have not spoken to him personally about the decision, but did know it was coming. I did not know when but was positive that it was imminent.

He did alot for our youth. And best of luck to him in his endeavors. He will not be back into coaching in the next seven years. He will enjoy watching his daughter grow through the girls basketball system.

Etzler part 2 is now the coach. Crestview fans are probably relieved to have one of their best.

A couple of tough acts to follow...
1) Jeremy Best is a great coach!
2) The name on the gym is a tough act to follow, too.

The biggest question is does it mean his nephew(?) is staying or is the rumor, supposedly by his brother(?) that he's going to St Henry?

I still laugh at that rumor. The family gets tired of being asked. There must be some people that really really want Kalen in St. Henry.

Kalen is going to be a Knight. For two more years. Then he will likely be a Buckeye, following in Doug's steps (unless he finds another school to fit his career goals better).

As far as a tough act to follow....yes. Dad's name is on the gym.

But, its a rebuilding act and one that should see Kalen and Doug's son help in the meantime, and one that has some pretty good players in the Jr High/Freshman class and lower. Some of the names will be familiar in a couple of years as they are brothers, family members, etc of this year's seniors and current players.

I hope you're not suggesting that leaving a DIVISION 4 school that has a 6'10 sophomore elite D1 college prospect in the program is leaving the cupboard bare!?!!? I know a bunch of D4 coaches that would take that!

Now if the Etzler boy leaves Crestview (with uncle's name on the gym), then the cupboard might be bare... but this is a division 4 school. There are a ton of Div 4 schools with bare cupboards.

Ray Etzler Gymnasium (Grandpa)
Doug Etzler head coach (Son of Ray and Uncle of Kalen)
Kalen Etzler (D1 top 50 in nation, grandson of Ray, nephew of Doug)

Larry Hester is either joking or a moron. Either way, Crestview will be good.
