I'm confused radiodave. The OHSAA has rules. Here are a few:
1) Max for games is 22 games and then the OHSAA tourney.
2) There's a dead period rule where a coach isn't allowed to do anything related to basketball (except lift weights) for the 4 weeks following the team's last game.
3) After the dead period, a coach can only work with 4 players at one time in something called individual workouts.
Just curious why you would think the OHSAA would approve breaking its own rules.
It does not matter what Geico's rules are. The OHSAA has rules.
And to your point, when I looked at the Geico brackets, there were mostly the sport-factory high school programs that were in this tourney. Kinda making Snodgrass correct.

Articles from that blog should honestly be banned from Yappi. A disgrace to journalism. I haven't read one credible thing from that source.

Then again I reckon that's why it's a "blog."

I think the point is/was that some nationally affiliated high school sports associations are letting some of their member participate. It is not a national high school affiliation thing. And... so what. The OHSAA can make its own rules if it wants to. This happens in some other sports but there have been some work arounds. Running and track comes to mind. Team sports is probably not possible

If you read the posting...it was not to say that OHSAA teams should participate, but that the Exec Director absolutely was wrong in his explaination of who plays in the tournament to the person who asked him.

Plus, Ohio is one of the few states that allow their member schools to play any school, even those not affiliated with an NFHS state association...including schools like COF Academy and SPIRE.

Those schools some of you say are sport factory schools compete in the Flyin To The Hoop tournament.

In 2016 the National Title games were played in Madison Sq Gardens, the OHSAA plays games at the Schott to very small crowds...so playing at a HS gym may not be a big deal, but national coverage on ESPN makes up for that.

Plenty examples of the Exec Dir responding to a tweet with misleading replies, see the other example in the story. That is just one of the recent ones.

I disagree with you on this. I think his point is that some of those factory schools don't belong to their own state associations. Schools like Spire. IMG. Oak Hill Academy. So they don't have to follow their state rules. I think this is the point he is making. And I think he is correct.

What part of "There might be a few (referring to HS's) but if you look at participating schools - they are mainly prep schools" did you not understand? It is not at all misleading.

He literally acknowledges that there may be a few HS's participating but for the most part, it is a prep school infestation and not something that a majority of state associations are going out of there way to allow their member schools to participate in... which, by the way, is a bylaw voted on and approved by the member schools themselves.

No story here. You should probably stick to fact based pieces (which are a great source of information) instead of op-ed. It is just better for everyone.

The OHSAA (and Jerry Snodgrass) are like the president. No matter what they say or what decisions they make there are people who will be unhappy and b*tch and moan regardless.

Did you read the story? Ohio is one of the few states and NFHS member associations that allows their member schools to play schools that do not belong to a state association...including all of the GEICO schools, plus a school like SPIRE who had a former player who competed as a pro overseas.

Plus the COF football mess this past fall...that could have been avoided.

The Exec Director made a statement that was very misleading on the GEICO Nationals...again the article was not that OHSAA schools had to compete in the event, but the statement was not what that event represents.

radiodave....what is your point? Look at the Geico schedule.....it is full of prep schools....not normal HS teams. Those teams are HS kids...so by the Geico rules, they are eligible. OHSAA rules do not allow participation in outside events after the season....simple enough. Find something else to complain about. It's raining and cold, maybe cry about that a little bit...it's about the only thing you haven't complained about on here

This is the right call by the OHSAA, if for no other reason than eliminating scheduling headaches with other sports and activities.

The basketball season is long enough - we don't need to give teams the option of pushing it into April.

This is the most Yappi post ever.

Radiodave posts drivel.

Bootlicker crew shows up to defend Snodgrass/OHSAA.

If we could get a Massillon argument started, it would perfectly encapsulate this site.

Bootlicker? Try reasonable logical folks who see a good leader for what he is. Snodgrass is very approachable both virtually and in person and gives honest direct answers. If people don't like it, that's their problem. I much prefer this style of leadership to being lied to/ignored.

There are definitely bootlickers on this site/in this thread. Sorry if that hurts your feelings.

Again...the story is not about allowing OHSAA member schools to play in the GEICO Tournament....it is about the Exec Director's misleading statement about the event.

As for leadership, he does a great job with the Golden Megaphone program.
His one major downfall is absence from the OHSAA office on numerous days.

Time to be the leader and not the cheerleader, plenty of issues need attention.
