Canton Central Catholic 2018

After three great seasons reality hit. Lower # of seniors, injuries, etc.
What do they have coming back? What's the outlook?

Unless something completely unexpected occurs, week 2 should be the annual backyard rivalry game with Massillon Perry. It would be Perry's turn to host.

Second year in a row of a pretty tough schedule.

No reason this series shouldn't continue for a long time.

Pretty stiff schedule. Good to see Louisville picking up so many local games. Expect to play them in every sport.

All things considered, this schedule is a relief from the schedule last year. Not traveling to Bellevue week one is big as is losing Winton Woods and Wooster. Wooster was a much better team as the year went along and will be very good this year. I realize Louisville is a very good football team, but one that Central will be able to play with year in and year out.

I don't think this is all that different than what Central traditionally schedules, but last year was a tough year for the Crusaders and hopefully the lumps taken will inspire growth in this team.

Central should be very good this year. They lost 17 seniors going into the 2017 season. They struggled due to a lack of experience and a challenging schedule. If they got into the playoffs I think they would of won a few games. In 2018 the majority of the defense is back. They have good skill and a few linemen back. As long as they can minimize injuries I think they will make a good run this year.

Probably great that the Pa. end of season game is finally over.
(Especially not knowing if you were gonna have a game or not)

That long trek into Pa. for week ten just to have a full schedule accomplished very little for either team.

Good to see Louisville playing Central.
I'm sure they can't be real picky who they get to play the next few years. At least not until they finally see what options they have for a conference. My guess is they stay independent and struggle to find games.
They really need to join the Fed. Regardless if they'll be one of the smaller schools.

We'll see what happens.

If not Perry, OHSAA has quite a few available.
Best bets would be:

Valley Christian, Marion Local, Bishop Fenwick, Dayton Dunbar, Nelsonville-York, Western Reserve Academy and Cincinnati McNicholas look like possibilities.

McNicholas and WRA are both willing to travel, which would add to the home schedule.

The other schools listed for week two are either too big or too small, or too far away.

Perry is the best bet and best gate.

It's Perry. Took them a while to approve the game in Arbiter.

I've heard 2018 is the last game of the contract. True?

This may be the last of the current contract, but as long as both administrations are currently employed this game will continue. It may move weeks next year as Perry has had trouble filling week three and Strongsville is not an ideal opponent for Central.

I think Central will do fine next year, and quite honestly, despite their poor record this year, had chances to win at least three games they lost, which would have put them in the playoffs. I hope that the younger players on the team don't lose sight of the forward progress that was made this year, despite their record.

That being said, I think they could easily go 7-3 with losses to Strongsville, Perry and either Jackson or New Philly. That would put them back in the playoffs and ready for another run at the state title game.

I agree that 2017 was a season of growing pains and a season that many Crusader faithful expected. Whether or not they were good or bad growing pains and whether or not the underclassmen are better or worse for the experience, I have no idea.

If they are one year older and better, I agree, but if they are simply one year older, we could be a .500 team. The line, in particular, was no impressive and did not seem to get much better as the year went on. If they do not improve, the skills kids, regardless of talent level, will struggle behind that line.

All that said, I project that the Crusaders will be a better team in 2018 than they were in 2017. People also forget that the senior class was lean on numbers and talent. In fact, during the 2014 Aquinas-Central game, Todd Porter questioned the viability of the program based on the fact we had just 8 frosh playing. I think we had a pretty good run after that tweet and the participation numbers have been up in each of the classes that followed them. What we lack are the dynamite athletes we were getting used to seeing in uniform. While I think Dylan Johnson could be that athlete if he can move back to WR, I am unsure of Austin Beck's desire or ability to take over at QB on a full-time basis.

The entire defense is back. The line has experience with 3 juniors and 1 sophomore returning. I expect this group to show big improvement. All 4 around the 6 ft 230ib range. They need to fill another line spot and pray for no injuries. I heard they are planning to keep Johnson at QB, he will be good as he gained a ton of experience last year, If Beck gets the call at QB he will do fine. 2 solid options. I'm thinking 7-3 or 6-4 this year with a deep playoff run.
