Tippecanoe Head Coach Joel Derge Resigns

Joel Derge has resigned from his head coaching position at Tipp, the administration informed team this morning, while Derge was not present. Family issues were cited as the reason but one must presume this may have to do with the Miamisburg position.

Letter from Derge. It looks like he will continue teaching at Tipp

It is very rare that someone resigns a position before being hired somewhere else. Maybe he truly wants to spend more time with his family.

That very well could be the case.

How is he connected to Miamisburg program?

The first two candidates that come to mind are Scott Clodfelter and Shane Carter

A lot of people have suggested that he is the perfect fit for Miamisburg, especially if they want to continue running the Wing-T. No concrete information just speculation tho.

I understand that Miamisburg is a D1 program, but I am not sure I would want to be in the meat-grinder of the GWOC each week as one of the smallest D1 schools. It would be very difficult to be a consistent winner regardless of offense.

Those are 2 good ideas. The key will be if Tipp wants a teacher in the system. I believe Carter is not a teacher and Clodfelter probably could not take a paycut leaving Beavercreek with his years of teaching.

Carter is not a teacher which will limit his options moving forward. However, he would be a slam dunk hire. He is rumored to be the Springfield coach in waiting from what I've heard. But who knows??

I don’t know that he would consider it but Tipp would be crazy to not reach out to Hyatt and gage his interest. At the very least would be good to pick his brain.

That’s the last thing they should do.

Sad day for Tipp. Good coaches are much harder to come by than most realize.

Clodfelter’s go/went to Tipp I believe. I would imagine he would be interested and the school may want him. Carter is a great coach but there are certain stigmas around Tipp City (whether true or untrue, I’m not saying either way). Not sure if Shane would want the job and not sure if they would want him. Does Tipp have any “top assistants” that could take it?

If you're implying that Tipp is a racist town your dead wrong. Tipp will take the best candidate no matter if he is black, white, yellow or blue. Scott’s oldest daughters graduated from Tipp, his youngest is still at Tipp and his wife is a school teacher at Tipp. They also live in Tipp. And no there are not any assistants worthy of the job, the lack of quality assistants the past 2 years is one of the main reasons I believe they have struggled. The name that intrigues me the most is Rodney Roberts because he was all but set to replace Burbacher when he retired from teaching and was going to retire from coaching before coming back for a few more years.

When Charlie “retired” and job was posted, Roberts withdrew from consideration after the first interview so he could stay at Franklin to coach his son during his senior year. Only reason he considered Tipp back then was because of his relationship with previous AD (they worked together in Springboro). Hardly all but set to come to Tipp. I’m sure previous AD would have a LONG conversation with Roberts if he applied.

I’m very sad to see Derge leave. He did an excellent job. Just a shame that he was not supported by new administrative team. Especially with their support of helping him bring in a high quality staff. But the super never wants to hire anyone that coaches.

Not sure about racist comment, but can say that I only know of one African American ever hired at Tipp, as an assistant coach, and that was not well received by anyone.

Going to be an interesting process. Best of luck to Tipp as they search for their new coach.

From what I have heard a lot of kids in the school that stopped playing football are now saying they will play again. One of the biggest reasons the admin was unsure of Derge, as well as others, was because the kids didn’t want to play for him. So many kids stopped playing because they couldn’t take him serious or questioned him. One could say that is a product of kids who shouldn’t be playing football in the first place or a bad culture among students, but star players fighting with Derge or questioning everything he does puts questions into the admins mind. I’m only stating what I have heard from players and people around the program. Derge is a brilliant offensive mind, and a great man, but it seems to me as that it’s hard for kids to want to play for him. Whatever that reason is I’m not sure.

If Tipp was not happy with the Wing T they certainly won't be happy with the Triple Option.

Tipp was certainly happy with the wing-t. The offense that Derge ran was not the problem

Give it a rest. You obviously in the Tipp system and trying to promote someone you like. You are part of the problem the whole program is facing.

I used to like Hinders Restaurant in Tipp. The last time I was there, I noticed a “black face” charicture behind the back wall of the lower level bar. Stunning to see in approximately 2015. Never be back.

I agree with you but you can't tell the football parents that. He wasn't liked by a number of the parents.
