I agree with Jerry. Too many times have I seen teams and players complain about how unfair playing a post season game near one of the schools playing in that game. If you are a good team, it should not matter where you play. In the article stated above, this Skylar who just happens to be from Danville, complains from having played at Beavers Field in Lancaster twice against Fisher Catholic in baseball. Beavers is not Fishers primary field even though is it less than a mile from the school. We as a society seem to always make excuses when we need to show encouragement and support. Complaining about where you play and how close it is to one school or the other show a sign of weakness from the team complaining and that is already one reason that team will lose. When you play a game, you need to go into it without negative thoughts. If you do, you are done. Let quit making excuses and just say we were defeated by a better team. It does not matter if you are at a site closer to your opponent or if you playing a million miles away. As long as you have fun and have the love and support of family friends and coaches, you will be alright.

Totally inappropriate. Comes across as an a-hole. For the head of OHSAA to dismiss in such an arrogant manner rather than attempt to explain (if needing to respond at all) the very real issue of balancing fairness with logistical/financial/hosting concerns - as a professional would do - is a disservice and frankly an embarrassment.

NE OH trolls should love it though. Just cut and paste the OHSAA Commissioner's response to everyone from SE Ohio and laugh.

Aren't District sites decided on before the two teams playing in the title game are determined?

There is absolutely nothing controversial about his comment. It is a personal, subjective opinion and will not effect how the OHSAA functions as a whole because the OHSAA does not determine district sites at all. That is up to the district board. EagleFan is correct that these sites are all determined before the tournament starts.

With that said, this type of engagement with people is great for the association. Everyone knows at every moment where he stands on issues whether or not it is popular opinion. His subjective opinion play no role in the decisions the association makes. Transparency in leadership. I am sure the majority or coaches and players who actually understand these types of issues and don’t look for excuses to why they are not successful but just work harder next time, agree. And I would also argue that that group is the majority. Coaches and administrators respect who he is, what he stands for, and his leadership abilities because he stands up for THEM so that they can do what is best for THEIR kids. Local control.

The only thing Jerry uses his twitter for is answering questions with another question.

But, he's not wrong.

To be fair, e\he explains very in depth, very often on twitter to exceptionally rude and mean posts. Poor guy should get credit for responding at all. People have no idea what goes in to sites. And the fact of who is willing to host.

But, he's not wrong.
Asking probing questions is part of him being a former educator / coach... and a good one at that. It allows him to get an understanding of why people have the opinions they do so that he can first put to rest any misunderstandings about how things function. Once he addresses that and gets a good feel for where they are coming from, he can properly educate on the reasons and purposes of why the OHSAA makes certain decisions (or non-decisions).

People may still not agree with it but he is extremely transparent and is providing outstanding leadership by approaching things in this manner rather than jumping to conclusions about a poster or ignoring them all together. A skill that many people today lack.
