Mentorís QB injury is the greatest threat to them right now.

In terms of teams, Region 1 is looking pretty strong. Eds/Ignatius are the teams I would be most concerned about. Euclid, Solon, and McKinley arenít too far behind. Region 4 is very winnable for Colerain. Region 1 will be a battle.

The semi-final vs the R3 champ will be no walk in the park for Colerain.

If the injury to the starting quarterback for Mentor keeps him out for an extended period of time, I would agree. If that is truly the situation, then I started this thread for nothing I guess.

R3 is always undervalued, lack of games against top tier teams from other regions during the regular season being the reason.
You can make the superficial case that since they don't play "anyone" in the playoffs, they are not as beat up as the R4 teams when they play in the Semi's; my humble opinion is that they are good and have some great high school coaches, underestimating them is an annual Yappi tradition

Really looking forward to see who comes from R3. Pick Central is the popular name but Hilliard Davidson might have something to say about that having taken PC to overtime earlier this year.

R2 looks to be rather weak. Reynoldsburg or Dublin Coffman likely to come from that region.

Region 4 is about as bad this year as I can remember, except for the fact that Colerain is really really good and Fairfield could probably play with a lot of teams. This is possibly the worst the GCL-S has been in some time, with Moeller going 3-0 in the league despite not really being good in any facet of the game. Region 3 seems to be the toughest region with Hilliard Davidson or Pickerington Central being title contenders and any of the GWOC teams (Wayne, Northmont, Springfield) likely being tough outs. Reynoldsburg or Dublin Coffman look likely to come out of Region 2, but the region has been brutal in games against other regions. If Mentor is still dealing with injury problems, Region 1 is wide open with any of Mentor, Solon, Euclid, St. Ignatius, or St. Edward's possible title contenders.

If Mentor is healthy though, the title game is going to be Mentor vs. Colerain.

Who has the best chance..............................

Even if Mentor is healthy , Eds is very capable of beating them. And Coffman is not a slouch either

The people saying a title game is a foregone conclusion are nuts.

If mentors qb is out or rusty they have zero chance of winning Region 1. If he's fully healthy and ready they are a contender along with a handful of others from regions 1 and 2

Didn't a 5-5 St X team win it all a few years back? There are a number of teams that could be there at the end not named Mentor or Colerain. Although I am okay with being wrong.

BEST chance? Since you're from down that way. St Xavier probably going to have to win two games to make playoffs or will one of those do?

Isn’t Colerain’s record against the Region 3 champ in the state semi’s like 1-4 or something like that? How can it be a forgone conclusion that they’ll make state title game? They beat Kilbourne in 2004. But I think have lost every other time.

I think they beat Brunswick one year, but that wasn’t a Region 3 team.

St. X should they play Colerain in Round 1 of playoffs. Think they gave them toughest games so far this yr.

We have seen this from them before its not how you start it is how you finish. I don't think couple of Columbus schools should be counted out either. Davidson and Central for sure. Not sold on Coffman.

Ummm no
Hillard Darby got worked at home by a not so good colerain team in 14
Dublin coff got absolutely destroyed in 15
In 13 colerain won comfortably against pick centeral
And not in the playoffs but in 12 colerain won comfortably against pick centeral again. So idk what your talking about.

Re-read the original post. If you mean just in the state semi that would be unfair since there wasnít one in 14-15-16. However in all other yrs I think since recent memory they are 2-3. 95-04 they won. 06-15-17 lost.
A lot has to do with depth. Colerain doesnít have a lot of it. And also because region 4 is usually a gauntlet they struggle.

I said against Region 3 champ in state semis. You obviously donít know what Iím talking about. I didnít say Colerain has never beaten a Region 3 team ever. I said when theyíve won Region 4, theyíve only beat the Region 3 champ once (2004).

Doesnít mean they wonít this year. Just saying I donít see how itís a fore gone conclusion theyíll make it to State title game.

1994 lost to Westerville South (Katzenmoyer)
1995 beat Brunswick???
2000 lost to UA
2004 beat Kilbourne
2006 lost to Davidson
2015 lost to Wayne (Dayton school)
2017 lost to Pickerington Central

Might have messed up on years. Didn’t look up. Just doing from memory, so don’t be too hard on me

Got it. I’m not hating on Colerain. Love their program’s history. Just saying history in State semifinals not always on their side that’s all.

St. Edward has the best chance of making it to the finals. Unsurpassed talent and superb coaching.

Your memory serves you well. You are absolutely correct.

This whole conversation is silly. Colerain has proven time and time (and time and time and time) again that they struggle...for whatever completely inexplicable reason...winning the State Semi-final.

On the flip side...look at Mentor. They have the 2nd most wins in the post-season of any school, regardless of division, in the ENTIRE STATE without a State Title. They are, LITERALLY, the Buffalo Bills of Ohio High School football. You kids under 30 can Google 'Buffalo Bills Superbowl" to get the reference. Add Wayne to that list as well.

Mentor & Wayne in the State Final: 0-8.

Now, is the reason Mentor has gotten to the Title game 4 times because they only have to beat the R2 winner whereas Colerain has to beat a much stronger R3 winner? Maybe....probably? Who knows. But the facts don't lie. Colerain has 7 Regional Championships and they are 2-5, on the field, in regional semi-finals.

Ouch, thanks for the reminder.

While I will agree that Region 3 is better than Region 2 lately, Mentor has beaten some good teams in the semifinals. St Eds was a state semi in 2013. That team was loaded and would win the title the following two seasons. McKinley was pretty strong in 2006. Last year was a gimme game against Olentangy Liberty. The 2007 opponent (Brunswick) had a nice QB, but overall not a super strong team. Mentor is 4-1 in state semifinal games. The lone loss was Whitmer in 2012.

As to why Mentor hits a road block in the state finals? 2006 was all about a struggle to stop the HD scheme and Bo Delande. 2007 was simply just a way better opponent. 2013 was a 55-52 thriller against Moeller...defense couldnít get stops. Last yearís game against Pick Central was close until the 4th quarter. A critical turnover and questionable coaching decision swung the game.
