No Rolling of the Shorts Rule to be strictly enforced in the OHSAA Tournament

Apparently a point of emphasis sent out in the past few weeks...

So worried about stuff that has no bearing on the game... Add it to the list of stuff the OHSAA has screwed up.

True, I don't know how many times our games has been interrupted because of the shorts..... it is not a big deal, they should be worried about more important things..

i want to see if actually happen. most refs dont even care. I saw a kid blatantly dunk in a JV warm up last week and the refs were to busy talking to each other that they didnt see it.

I went to a game a few years back with two officials that were from different districts. One from the Cleveland area and one from the Akron area. What was interesting is that both had their own specific call that they were known for. This was a game with a team from Akron and one from Cleveland.

The first ref always enforced the shirt tucked in rule. If you were waiting to come into the game and had your shirt untucked, he would send you back to the bench. The Akron team knew this and was always tucked in. The Cleveland team took a couple times with players being benched before they caught on.

The second official called the running out of bounds by the baseline a violation every time. The Cleveland team knew this and the Akron area team took a few violations before getting used to it.

It's always interesting at tournament time to see teams adjusting to officials they are not familiar with.

I'm guessing you will have most officials enforcing the rolled shorts and it will take some teams a little while to get accustomed to it.

Cincinnati has been handling this very well, it seems the majority of Officials have bought in.

I would have to say that almost every team in the Canton district has a player or multiple players that do it. will be interesting to see what happens. I have not seen one player get asked to unroll the entire year.

What is the reason for this becoming a point of emphasis?

I think it looks ridiculous, especially with the tags hanging out and all that. But I was wondering what the officials position is.

North Carolina (NCHSAA) has been enforcing this rule for 2 years now. It was funny, I was home over break in OH this Christmas and went to a couple games and saw lots of kids rolling shorts over and it looked very sloppy. Just used to NC I guess where this is enforced.

In NC, if shorts are too big, then kids rolled the shorts in, not out. It works the same and looks a lot better.

A couple of years ago OHSAA decided they were going to crack down on the width of the headbands the girls basketball players wore- I still just shake my head at that one

Was it a fixed width or a percentage of the forehead that mattered?

I've seen some so wide the kid got pulled over for driving blind.

A few things I think always get overlooked on this topic-
This is an NFHS rule, not an OHSAA rule. Sometimes people get that confused.

The exact rule is uniforms must be “worn as the manufacturer intended.” That covers rolling of the shorts, but it isn’t something that’s singled out.

The logic behind wearing uniforms “as the manufacturer intended” is safety, but how much that actually comes into play with any given thing is subjective.

It's also in place to keep the kids from bringing attention to themselves. They're called "uniforms" for a reason.

Why exactly do they roll the shorts? Are they mimicking someone? I think it looks ridiculous myself but whatever.

Rolled Shorts

This is why they do not want the shorts rolled

^^Yep. This is what inspired NFHS to stress it as a point of safety and enforcement. It happened within the last month or so in NY, I believe, and the player lost their finger as a result.

The photo is from a game north of New York City about a month ago. However, according to the game photos, the girl stayed in the game and continued playing.

Fixed Width- keep in mind for the ladies they don't wear on the forehead but to keep their hair in place!

I'm a big rule person- I love having rules and making sure my kids follow em. This is just a little silly to me especially considering that the girls hair is not uniform in what size works best to hold it back.

Kids are copycats....they also push the envelope...

If rules aren't in place to control what's being worn, it will get out of hand in a hurry. Hairbands were a prime example......

Hence, restrictions on what can be used.

They roll the shorts because they saw someone do it.

If the shorts are too big, it's on the school to get the correct size.

I apologize for interrupting this thread. This is a uniform regulation, I presume? Is the size of the headband in the uniform regulations, as well? I thought the headband rule was no larger than 2 inches wide? is this correct, or not a regulation?

This has gone too far. What about middle school teams who get hand me down uniforms from the high school. Small 8th graders trying to wear adult size shorts that are way to long and big. Some school district don't buy new uniforms for middle school. Is it a safety hazard if the string is not out? Let's worry about more important things. Refs are more worried about shorts than they are about the game itself. Many refs are annoyed by the rule but they have to do their job and enforce it. Why was the rule ever put in place. If some kid wants to role his shorts up 10 times and look ridiculous that's on him. As soon as the short shorts start to come back Michigan will bring back the super long shorts and kids will be wanting to wear that again. If all parents start wearing short shorts the kids will want nothing to do with it. If you want to stop a trend have 40 year olds start doing it and it disappears.
