A Futile and Stupid Gesture- 5.5/8

Pretty good. Iím a fan of Will Forte. This film tells the story of the early years of the National Lampoon franchise. Worth a watch.

Yeah, I see that I have really cut down from about 40 movies a month to just a couple.... just busy watching high school basketball and watching series on HBO and Showtime before losing those channels....

Remember (2015)- found this gem on Amazon video and took a chance. Very happy I did. The story involves 89 year old played by Christopher Plummer suffering from dementia who escapes a nursing home after his wife dies to search for a Nazi prison guard and travels around Canada and the US searching for the guard, under the direction of fellow nursing home resident Martin Landau. A little slow toward the beginning, but really picks up and grabs you at the end. 7/8.

Heard of that one.

Dr Strange 6/8 I think I'd rank this as one of my favorite Marvels. Just the right amount of humor and I wasn't expecting Cumberwhatever could deliver that kind of line.

Thor Ragnorak: 3/8 the comedy central Thor didn't appeal to me. Didnt think it was well delivered either and a lot of bad timing on it at critical moments. I guess they're going Guardians with everything now. The ending wasn't too appealing but pretty much what is expected in a long running comic as writers tromp on previous writers and run out of ideas. Like the world settings though.

The Maze Runner: Death Cure

6/8

Strong finish to an underrated science fiction trilogy. Great special effects and a spectacular (and coherent) battle for control of a city at the end make this a must see for folks who like SciFi.

Ice Station Zebra - (1968) - Rock Hudson, Ernest Borgnine, Patrick McGoohan. Acting was only so-so, but a decent movie. I'm guessing the Alistair McLean book was better. 5.5/8.

Girls Trip: 5/8

A solid comedy, but a few of the jokes felt a little forced and like they were trying to hard. Particularly Tiffany Haddish, who I thought was good but not as good as I was expecting based on the hype she got following the movie's release. She was trying to be a female Kevin Hart, but it just came off as the sophomoric crap we get when the likes of Seth Rogen/Will Ferrell are mailing it in. The story and heart of the movie save it from being just an over the top comedy.

12 Strong: 6.5/8

Great movie, great story. Story details the mission of the first team to go into Afghanistan after 9/11. Very good cast. Starts a little slow, but the last hour is great.

Swiss Arm Man 4/8

Had heard great things about this movie, but just couldn't get into it. It is basically a cross between Cast Away and Weekend at Bernie's. Paul Dano is on an island about to commit suicide until he sees a dead body wash up on shore. From there they go on an "adventure" to get home.

The Infiltrator - 6/8

Also a little slow to start, but kicks in as the movie goes along. For much of the movie Bryan Cranston is just playing Walter White personality wise, but it works for the most part. I imagine the ending was accurate, so I hope this situation taught law enforcement that you also arrest the undercover person when making a bust. It bothered me that the two undercovers weren't touch, just telling all of the bad guys in the room (who none of which got more than 15yrs in prison) who screwed them over and that they should have killed.

American Assassin

7/8

I really liked this movie. It was boilerplate super spy stuff but I thought they executed it with intelligence and originality. One of the best movies I've seen in the past year.

...with the weather crappy over the weekend, I watched a couple of movies that I hadn't seen in a long time

"The Departed" with a really good cast (DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen..etc). that was directed by Martin Scorsese about the Irish mob in Boston (7/8)

"The Wild Bunch" classic western directed by Sam Peckinpah also with a great cast that had William Holden, Robert Ryan, Ernest Borgnine, Warren Oats, Ben Johnson..etc. The shoot out scene at the end is legendary. (7/8)

It Stains the Sands Red (2016)

Horror: Stranded in the middle of the desert a woman is followed by a zombie who is attracted to her because its that time of the month.... I can't make that up.... It is what it is... 2.5/8

Mark of the Witch (1970)

Horror: An old Witch seeks revenge on the relatives that wronged her. I like old Witch movies but this one fell a bit flat.... 3.5/8

Mother's Day (2010)

Horror: Who lived in your house before you moved into it? Well, the boys are back in town and head home after being on the run to find that Mom lost the house. That is unfortunate for the ones that now live there and it gets sadistic when Mom shows up.... 4.5/8

The Horror of it All (UK-1964)

Horror/Comedy: This is another one of those boy meets fiancee's family and they turn out to be eccentric and murderous. This one wasn't that bad until near the end something stupid happened and it ruined it for me.... 3.5/8

Godfather 8/8

I honestly didn't expect it to hold up but I think I enjoyed it more than I remembered. For that matter, I don't remember being particularly enamored. This viewing I really saw the performances, felt like another person in the room instead of just watching. Everytime I had a "gotcha" plot hole, they filled it in. Only bits that didn't register with me were the Sicilian marriage and the horse bit. The marriage wasn't really followed up on. Kind of glad she got blown up, she was annoying. As for the other, no problem with the threat persay but the set-up and the actor. Yeah, they somehow got a horsehead into his bed, into that mansion, second floor, without him waking. And his performance, came across more acting than real. Eh, one of those, "you just need to enjoy and not think too much" moments.

Hope to get II in tonight.

The Silence

6/8

Martin Scorsese's profound & disturbing look at faith & temptation as he follows the last Jesuit priests in 16th century Japan. Striking, naturalistic movie.

I found this so hard to get into. I agree with comments Iíve seen where it is better viewed in a theater where you have less distractions.

I enjoyed this movie. Not sure I would say 7/8 but probably a solid 6. Probably because I feel the book was better. But that is usually the case.

If you haven't read any of the books I recommend them. Great reads if you like that genre.

I happened upon the directors cut version one night when traveling for work. Only got to see some of it but the scenes left out of the standard version we're interesting. I have been trying to get my hands on a used copy so I can watch the whole thing but haven't had any luck yet.

Horrendous dialogue in the first half of the movie but the second is better.

I can see that. I had the house to myself and was able to focus on just the movie. And you're right the movie moves slowly in a Terrance Malick sort of way.
