Euclid DI District 17-18

In what was once criticized to be the "Mentor Invitational" - the Euclid district has really stood out lately with its quality of teams. Mentor won the Euclid district ten times from 2001-2013. After a three year drought, Mentor defeated Solon in last year's district final. Not quite as top heavy as the Solon district (Garfield, Shaker, and CCC) - but I would put the depth of Euclid up with any other DI district in Ohio.

The inclusion of Cleveland Heights and the rise of Solon are the biggest reasons for this district standing out. Benedictine moving up to DI this year and joining Euclid only further strengthens the depth. Brush has been a staple at Euclid, and this may be one of their most talented groups ever. Mentor is certainly having a down season, but they are fully capable of pulling off some magic in March. Those five teams are the big boys. There are a handful of others that are having nice seasons too.

- Solon is going to be the unanimous No. 1 choice for top seed
- I think Brush might have the edge at No. 2 for now, but Benedictine and Cleveland Heights will be right behind them depending on how the next 10 days or so goes
- Mentor has probably buried themselves as the No. 5 seed since their biggest win of the season is probably against South. They do play Shaker, Solon, and VASJ before the vote on seeds. If they want to climb out of a difficult path in the tournament, they will need to win two (or possibly three) of those games.

Here is my prediction as things stand now:

1. Solon (12-0)
2. Brush (10-4)
3. Benedictine (8-4)
4. Cleveland Heights (9-4)
5. Mentor (8-4)
6. Mayfield (10-2)
7. South (7-5)
8. East Tech (11-4)
9. John Hay (10-7)
10. North (3-9)
11. Riverside (1-8)
12. Madison (??)
13. Lakeside (1-8)

South and Mayfield both played Brush tough and Brush was one of only a few teams that have beat Garfield. This tournament is 7 deep with a number of teams capable of pulling off an upset. Benny is very good when they are on and could give anybody in the field fits. There will be killer games from the second round on. There will be no cupcakes come round two.

A few thoughts on this district:

Solon's the clear #1. I believe that #2 will go down to the wire between Brush and Benedictine.

I know that Cleveland Heights and Mentor have played tough competition so far this year, but the fact that NOBODY is mentioning the great job that Bob Pacsi is doing so far at Mayfield is criminal. That team is 12-2 thus far, and has a close loss to Brush.

I could possibly see them move into the #4 spot, depending on what happens with Cleveland Heights and Mentor. If not, they'll be a really strong #6, especially if they face off against Brush in a sectional semifinal.

East Tech and South aren't teams to look past either, and could possibly pull off an upset if the stars align correctly, but if one of them has to face Solon, it will be VERY difficult.

Brush lost to Riverside last night. That one's got to sting a little.

Riverside sucks. Nobody saw that coming. Brush also had tough games with South, Chardon and Mayfield. They have an uncanny knack of playing down to their competition.

One thing is certain: Solon is the top seed. I have a really good feeling Benedictine locked down the 2 seed with wins over Lake and Ignatius this weekend. Brush's loss to Riverside coupled with Mentor's strong week turned the tides some. The vote of the WRC (South, North, Riverside, Brush, Mayfield, Madison) really helps dictate seeding. Usually those teams show favor toward Mentor after many years of earning their respect. Cleveland Heights has run through the LEL, but has not played well in the independent part of their schedule. With no fellow league members voting at Euclid, that will hurt their seed some.

The week that was:

-Solon (15-0) beats Euclid and Mentor
-Benedictine (13-4) had a huge week that included wins over St Ignatius and Lake Catholic
-Brush (13-5) beats Chardon before getting shocked by Riverside
-Mentor (11-5) goes 2-1 against Solon/Shaker/VASJ...a great week for them
-Cleveland Heights (11-6) edges out a game with Lutheran East and also beats Maple
-Mayfield (13-3) beats Valley Forge and North, but falls to South by 11
-East Tech (13-4) beats John Marshall and remains undefeated in the Senate
-South (10-6) beats Mayfield and Riverside

As I noted, about half of the coaches voting at this district are from one league. The power of that vote can't be overlooked. Brush is at the top and normally that would mean a lot. But the Arcs have a two-point win over South and a three-point win over Mayfield. Those tight contests (plus the recent loss to Riverside) might make some of the coaches rethink how high they put Brush.

Mayfield and South will be another interesting vote among the WRC coaches. Mayfield has a stronger record, but South has beaten Mayfield twice head-to-head. South took more chances in their non-conference schedule.

As I said above, Solon and Benedictine are probably locks into the top two seeds. Mentor, Heights, and Brush could go anywhere 3-5. Being the 3 seed would be a huge advantage over the alternative. The 5 seed will be a good team that has a very difficult path just to get to the district final.

St. Ed and Solon are the cream of the crop in NE Ohio this year. IMO there are 12-15 teams out there, that on any given night, could beat one another. That being said, Benedictine's SOS and quality wins (CCC, Lake Catholic X2, Revere, St. Ignatius and St. Francis of Staten Island N.Y.) should earn them the second seed. Their 4 losses came against Garfield Hts, @SVSM, @St. Ed, and @Hoban. I know the road will be a tough one for any teams that makes the district finals, but I would love to see Solon and Benedictine in the finals.

This is the first year of the new system of seeding. The top four seeds get placed on the bracket without any choice. After that, the rest of the seeds (5-13) have a choice. I have to believe the 5 seed, the first team with a choice, will avoid Solon's half of the bracket. The 6 seed may do the same thing. I think it will end up something like this:

1 Solon (Bye)
9 vs 10 seed

7 vs 8 seed
4 vs 12 seed

3 seed (Bye)
5 vs 13 seed

6 vs 11 seed
2 seed Bye

My prediction on seeds (which I think will mostly get voted on before this weekend's games are complete):

Solon (15-0)
Benedictine (13-4)
Mentor (11-5)
Brush (13-5)
Cleveland Heights (11-6)
South (10-6)
Mayfield (13-3)
East Tech (13-4)
John Hay (10-9)
Riverside (3-9)
North (3-12)
Madison ??
Lakeside

So it might almost be a disadvantage to end up with the 4th seed? This seeding/bracketing system might be even worse than what we had before.

In any bracketed tournament, if it goes "chalk", the #1 seed and #4 seed will meet in the semis in the top half of the bracket and the #2 seed would play the #3 seed in the semis in the bottom half.

bucksman will become famous soon enough
Northeast district - starting with baseball/softball in spring 2017, all of the team sports are now straight up brackets. The seeding is done by online vote and the bracket is set off the seeds. No choice of lines.

13 teams:
1-BYE, 8-9; 4-13, 5-12
3-BYE, 6-11; 7-10, 2-BYE

The debate over the concept has been beat to a bloody pulp across the sports.

I remember hearing that there was a change involving the top seeds being forced to take a bye as well as having a rule where the 1/4 were on one side and the 2/3 seeds were on the other. I thought that the process started letting the 5 seed choose their path and so on. I can see now that the girls brackets are set up like bucksman shows. I prefer the system before, but I was OK with some change. This is way too much change at once.

With all of that said, the difference between being the 3 seed and the 4/5 is going to be HUGE at Euclid.

-Path of the 3 seed to the district final is BYE, 6 seed (likely South/Mayfield), and Benedictine.
-Path of the 4 seed: 13 seed, 5 seed (at home), and then Solon
-Path of the 5 seed: 12 seed, 4 seed (on the road), and then Solon

The 3 seed has a much more manageable path to the district final. The vote between Mentor, Brush, and Cleveland Heights will be very close. I'm hoping Mentor finds favor and gets the edge. I think they have a reasonable chance at making the district final with that draw. As the 4 or especially the 5 seed, that will be incredibly difficult.

Mentor wins at Brunswick and Mayfield knocks off Brush. I would like to think that propels Mentor into the 3 seed. I wonder how the WRC coaches will vote teams from their own league. Mayfield has a good record and picked up a signature win, but they have lost both times to South. Brush is currently at the top of the league, but they have a couple recent losses.

It is going to be very close between brush and mentor. Will see how they account for their wins over Garfield and cornerstone and also being in 1st in their conference. For mentor the conference is better and they have been playing better in the last 7-8 games. This is my 1-6

Solon
Bene
Mentor
Brush
Mayfield
Cleve hts

Nice win by Mentor over (at) Brunswick (78-70) last nite. Mentor led by 17 at halftime & led all the way. Mentor had 5 tough opponents to play last 2 weeks, beat Shaker Hts, lost to Solon by 6, beat VASJ, beat Brunswick for a 3-1 record, 12-5 overall. Also won 8 of last 9 games during that run. This is typical Mentor basketball, peaking at tournament time. Don't know where they will end up in the seedings, but I would not feel comfortable meeting them in the tournament. Coach K always has his team ready to go at this time & they always seem to rise to the occasion. It will be interesting to see where they end up in the draw & which bracket they end up in. I personally would like to see a Mentor/Solon match-up in the district finals.

Tigers win the LEL with a hard fought 65-55 victory over Lorain last night Heights is starting to pick up some steam at just the right time of the season, this team will not be a easy out come tournament time, they should have six wins in a row before the game at home against the Bulldogs, and will surprise some people.

The Tigers’ physicality around the basket also played a huge role in the victory over Lorain Heights outrebounded Lorain, 13-9, in the second half, including seven offensive boards as the Titans struggled giving up two, sometimes three, shots a possession.

Heights had three players in double figures, including Tyreke Smith with 20 points, Javon Roberts with 16 and the Tigers’ all-time leading scorer, Yahel Hill, with 13.
