Ms. Basketball 2018

Since this came up on another thread and the post season is beginning thought it would be good to get the debate started! Play nice- stay positive when talking about these impressive young ladies please. You can praise your favorite player without bashing another one!

Tons of kids that could make a case.. it's a great year in girls' hoops in Ohio.. not hard to figure out who I think should get it but here's a short list of contenders:

Bell from McKinley
Mikesell from Jackson
Horston from Africentric
Sheldon from Coffman
Prohaska from LW
Hillmon from Gilmour
Marshall from MND
Puisus from Mason

Someone from Pick Central would have to be in the mix I'd imagine but I don't know enough about them to pick one

I would say Solon's Valencia Myers could easily win this although she doesn't have the scoring as some of those girls but she 6'2 Florida state commit and is playing is the McDonalds all- american game, which with that could push here to the top.

Gabbi Marshall has been out of action for a month- not sure what her status is for postseason but if unable to play in tourney, that would likely knock her out of the running.

Not sure which one you are referring to- more info? Maggie Kersting from 7 hills is the first one that pops into mind- a freshman with 20+ pts/game- they are D4 I believe.

Leads the league in scoring last I saw published but the league isn't what it was and Rogers has talent all over the floor. I don't expect the stats to mean much per Ms Basketball as they did in Natasha Howard's day.

My bad- she's a senior who scored her 1,000th pts this season. If anyone from the lower divisions in Cindy area were to get the nod it would be Alexander from Summit. She was POY for D3 last year and also an all American for soccer. I don't think Ms. Basketball will be from our area though, but it were to happen would likely be a D1 player Puisis or Prohaska. I'll make a prediction now that Loveland freshman Jillian hayes should be a finalist in a couple of years.

Marshall will be back soon from what I've heard but agreed that missing any significant part of the season hurts chances vs the other kids who played the whole way... good call on the Toledo kid too.

I have seen all of them play with the exception of Horston. It will be a tough choice, but I think it shouldn’t be decided on statistics alone. Unfortunately, that’s about all the voters probably have to go on or to what grabs their attention. If I were one of the captains on the playground, my first pick out of that group would be Hillmon. There’s still plenty of basketball to be played.

I agree that it shouldn't be based on statistics alone. But, if it's going to be, it should be all statistics (points scored, shooting percentage, assists, rebounds, steals, blocks, etc.).

Kierstan Bell has 734 points this season (33.36 per game average), but I'm more impressed by her rebounds (leads the team), blocks (I think also leads the team), steals, and assists.

I'm not as familiar with the other players so I don't know what their all around stats look like...just think all stats should factor into the award designation.

About those assists....while not necessary, especially since it was a close game, this is impressive. Yes, I'm biased!

The division players of the year have been notified. They will probably be announced in a few days.

Are you sure about that? The All-Ohio honors are usually not announced until the week of the state tournament. That would be next week.

Have the all-District teams been chosen yet?

The all-district teams were voted on last weekend (not yesterday, weekend before)... it's possible that the POY's are done already but agree with Slippery they usually don't announce that stuff til the week of state.

with all due respect to the rest of the state, here in sw ohio- cincy area I really like prohaska -Lakota west, puisus- mason has/was hurt for a minute not sure the writers/media would consider giving it to a junior-I say why not if she good enough, it should not make a difference.

I also really like Madison greene from pick central, another underclassman, as well as Katie shumate from Newark, she does not get the ink or credit state wide that she probably should get.

both of these ladies are really good and probably should get some votes at least, jmo

Given that they gave it to a sophomore last year, I'm fairly confident that a junior status wouldn't eliminate an athlete from consideration.

I'm gonna guess Bell doesn't get it because of the early exit from the tournament and since she's returning next year. She is going to be the odds-on favorite for next year and I doubt they want to award it to the same person three years in a row. Perhaps a bit unfair but I imagine that'll be the thought process.

Of the remaining players I only know about Mikesell, so I'm not really qualified to say who wins.

You’re at least as equally qualified as those voting. I doubt the majority of the “voters” have even seen a portion of the candidates play, much less all of them.

The voting for this goes on before the tourney... the tourney results have never really factored in to the Ms. Basketball voting.... I'd expect a Jackson fan to hope she doesn't get it though since your entire program has been campaigning for a change in Ms. Basketball all year Honestly, Mikesell is an amazing player and if she had come through in any other years, she'd have been a repeat winner imho.

As previously mentioned, Bell won it last year and has improved in every statistical category. She'll easily set the county scoring record next year and if healthy could make a serious run at 3000 pts/moving up very high on the state's all-time list in a career. She hit for about 850 (ish) points this year, 250 rebounds, 100 assists, 125 steals, etc, etc... I'd never say any award is a 'given', but it'll be tough to take it away from her.

Sammie Puisis was named district POY for southwest Ohio. In addition Prohaska, Marshall and Heidemann were named to first team.

Ah, interesting! I didn't know the voting was already done. What change has Jackson been campaigning for?

For a different winner... can't blame the coaches for pushing for their own kid I suppose

Either way, Ms. Basketball is picked from the District POY winners... so Puisus is the candidate from SWO. Who has won from other districts?

And in our area, Brown is not even remotely the best player, nor the best statistical year. She's 6'2", hard working player in a weak conference. Not even sure PBurg played out of the area. Voting just happens that way sometimes.
