Buckeyes took a brief lead after a Andre Wesson three but Purdue counters with an old fashioned three point play.

2017-18 Buckeye Basketball

Heck of a game. Never would have thought it would end this way midway through the second half. No way do the Purdue bigs get away with that style of play in the tourney. Get an ACC Ref crew and the entire front court would foul out.

Big props to the elder Wesson and the youngster Jallow. They hit some big shots and Andre played great defense on Haas in the 2nd half. Definitely not the Wesson we'd expect to be a key player tonight.

Huge win! Again, what Holtmann has done has been amazing. They never quit, and he demands defensive effort. To get a Big Ten championship this year would be something not even the most optimistic fan could have expected. But Holtmann has it in his grasp. KBD is the player of the year in the league, no doubt.

Damn what a freaking game. To do that without getting much of anything from K. Wesson at Purdue is just insane. Agreed with cjb, not a single person could have guessed this.

Between this and snagging NPF, yesterday was a great day to be a Buckeye fan.

Haas totally trucked over Tate in one sequence with a totally unbelievable no-call. Tate literally went flying into the basketball goal support.

It was as if the rules of basketball didn't apply all of a sudden, because the refs decided Tate had the obligation to get out of Haas' way, since he was smaller. I didn't realize there was a you-shouldn't-have-gotten-in-the-bigger-guy's-way exception all of a sudden.

Andre Wesson has responded extremely well to being forced into a starting role with Williams out. A lot of people thought he didn't deserve a schollie, and he was only getting one to get Kaleb, but he has proven the doubters wrong. I'm not saying he's great, but it was not a "sympathy schollie" after all.

What this team lacks in talent, they more than make up for it in guts. Can you imagine what the last couple of years would have been like if they had played with this kind of toughness?

Bodies tend to bounce off Haas. There's not a team in the league not saying the same, and sure it happens but it's usually the defensive guy initiating contact and losing the mass game.

I've posted before didn't think Purdue was the favorite here. They play excellent rotation ball but are very susceptible to even a good outside shooting mid-major. They simply don't have the recruits OSU does (heck two of Purdue's best are OSU's didn't even look ats) and the new OSU coach has those recruits playing as good a team ball as I'm seeing on ESPN replays. How that equates for OSU when they do meet a team with equal or better athletes will be the real measure.

As I posted, I think the suspension will benefit the team, giving next man up more time before tourney.

Being Purdue alum but not really a follower of their athletics, I'm 50-50 split on who I root for when OSU plays, simply because I see it as a David - Goliath thing. I'd root OSU if they have more on the line, like the Holy Buckeye. If they were to meet in the final four? Probably Purdue. Wouldn't cry though. Been a LONG time since OSU got a NC in b-ball. I'd like to see it. Just would like to see Purdue get it first because it's a one in a lifetime for them.

Had to have been a dream. Or maybe the games you saw just weren't big draws? I would think OSU would be. They've averaged over 11,000 all but a couple years over the last 50. Nearly 80% on average. Dungeon?

When Toledo played OSU in football, I asked some people on their board what I should see and do. They told me about the "Skull Session."

I've been in the Schott. Now I've been in St. John's. What were they thinking when they build Schott? St John's would have been a dream place to see a basketball game, much as Mackey still is. It's one of those places that screams atmosphere from the instance you walk in the doors, much like St John's appeared to be with it's much different configuration.

One of my favorite fan experiences was seeing OSU at Mackey. Kid in my grad class in HS played for the Bucks. Big deal to me, had to stifle my shouts for the "wrong" team.

I believe the major drawback to St. John's is that there is no way to configure the arena to cost effectively include air conditioning. While OK for basketball during the winter it limits the revenue stream for an arena as they cannot have concerts and such from April to October. Its not bad for volleyball when there are only a thousand or so fans in the seats but I was at a boys HS tourney game during an unseasonable warm March day and the upper balcony was a steam bath. Wish they could have figured something out as it was a great place to see a game as the balcony hangs over the court and has incredible sight lines even with the small polls holding it up. Only place similar, polls and all, that is still in use is the Minnesota's Williams Arena>

I was refering more to the design of the Schott really. I understand OSU was going to need a modern high capacity arena but am puzzled why they couldn't have recreated that close to the floor atmosphere that the balconies give. That parabolic roof... I'd have probably saved some of the old seats and reused, just because. I've only seen high school at Schott. Just blah. Heck, even that photo makes me want to go see a game.

That was the reason I liked it so much. A big, great place to see a game, but it still had that feel of some of the bandboxes many rural schools had as their home courts.

Biggest reason for OSU's success this season I believe is how fundamentally sound the Buckeyes are. Rebound well, don't turn the ball over and play sound defense ( do not gamble defensively ). Really can not understand why coaches do not stress fundamentals more, fundamentals can make up for a lack of talent to some extent.

The game has been AAU-ized at every level. The fans want offense and flashy plays. So do the players. It makes for worse basketball, but it is an entertainment option, so you have to do what the people want to see. It wasn't that long ago the Buckeyes were in the Elite 8 against Wichita State, and all season long that year...a Big Ten title season...all we heard was how boring they played.

Agree about the AAU style of play. However for me personally I would rather watch fundamentally sound basketball played at an up tempo pace, you can do both. Indiana did it for years under Bobby Knight.

Wesson is starting. Time to get that revenge. I expect them to come out intense considering how the last game wasn't that long ago. It's still fresh in their minds.
