Newark Schools Africentric 60-52

Top rated Newark (18-0) led all the way in beating Africentric on Jan.31 at Affricentric (17-2). The Nubians, rated number 2 in Div. 3, only previous loss was to defending Michigan champ Detroit Edison in overtime.

The Wildcats were hot as usual from three point range making nine. Morgan Sharps had 20 points including six threes. Jordon Horston had 18 for the Nubians.

Several scouts including a University of Connecticut assistant coach were in attendance.

Thank you for the report; however, I don’t think winning by eight is really “schooling” anyone.

Newark led by 18 at half and as many as 24 points into the 3rd before Africentric made a few late runs ( 7-0 & 10-0) to close the gap.

Maybe not.

According to the Columbus Dispatch "relentless might describe how Newark broke down Africentric's vaunted full court press".

The 'Cats opened up an early 22-8 lead and led 40-22 at the half. With a 19 point lead going into the fourth quarter they let off the gas and ran the clock. In fairness to the Nubians they were without Jordon Horston in the second quarter as she sat with two fouls.

Look for both of these teams in Columbus in March!

I'm inclined to agree, but Newark's challenge is their schedule. While Africentric is a quality win for them, their overall schedule doesn't prepare them very well for the tournament.

Shumate puts together a pretty good non conference schedule though the OCC capital is pretty weak. They will be ready come tourney time.

And while most years the OCC capital is pretty weak, it is much stronger this year than normal. Big Walnut, Canal Winchester and New Albany are all pretty solid. Nobody will dare claim it is like the old OCC Ohio days w/Nwk, PC, PN, Rey & Gahanna, and while none of those previously mentioned teams can beat them, they're not like the division has been the last 3 or 4 years.

Cats also beat a very good team from Chicago down in Cincinnati over the holidays as well in addition to all the non-league games supt3275 mentioned.
