2018 Perry Panthers

As two a days open today, it’s time to look at the upcoming season. I’ll starting with a quote from Coach Wakefield, who doesn’t blow smoke and something I’ve said, but has been rebuffed by a poster or two.
"It might be as good of a group as I've ever had," Wakefield said of his running backs.
While Perry’s fortunes, like everyone else’s, begins and ends with the offensive and defensive lines, IMO, the QB Sciury(6-2 185) FB Curtis(5-9 205) and WB Coleman(6-2 200), along with backups, Lightner, Cundiff, Lemon and Armstrong, they are as deep and talented as I’ve seen in awhile.
Max Millin(5-11 270) and Vinny Sciury(6-5 272) return up front to help bring along the lines.
Newcomer and sprinter Tre’ Robinson(6-2 170) WR brings breakaway speed at that position. Another weapon is place kicker Caden Basham, who is a threat from 40-50 yards away.
Numbers are down from 59 to 50 with 25 seniors gone, but that’s one more than they had in 2015.

People who know tell me that once some of the new guys get some reps and get it figured out, Perry will be the team no one wants to play come late September.

I’ll be able to form a better opinion once the Panthers have scrimmaged Buchtel and Boardman.

Who is Tre' Robinson? Agree with Ed that old Wakey usually does his annual Lou Holtz routine about now. If this really is his best backfield ever then WOW, may not matter who the receivers are.

Love it though. Optimism reigns supreme. (in early August).

Tre’s family moved here from Cleveland. He only ran track. Doesn’t wrestle lol, He does sprints and relays.

The only thing that matters with WRs is if they can hold their block against the SS.

Lol. Good one 1480. And thanks Ed. Might be a good return man or db too we'll see.

Btw, wr's who can block are VERY underrated.

(Google Spencer's block vs. Alabama for the National Championship - one of my fav plays of All-Time).

My take on first scrimmages is that a lot of times there are certain positions that are up in the air. So coaches will look at different players even though the first or second units are out there. As far as scoring goes, obviously, much better to win than lose, but depending on a certain teams experience, that’s not the end all be all, unless said teams are giving up TD’s like it’s candy on Halloween.

Varsity only
On Buchtel’s first possession they got about 16 yards on ten plays. Perry drove from their 30 to Buchtel’s 14 on ten plays.
Second possession for Buchtel they went from their 30 to their 43 on nine plays and on play 10 completed a pass to the Perry 30.
Perry’s next possession on play 4 they broke off a 63 yard TD run.
I thought Perry’s defense played pretty well. Probably some work on pursuit angles and in the secondary, but overall not bad.
Offense was pretty basic. It looked to me they ran about the same 10 plays throughout. They moved the ball decently.
I thought Buchtel looked better than last year. They seem to have a better passing attack than last year.

I think we’ll get a much better idea where the Panthers are after Thursday. Boardman is supposed to be a playoff team, their kids play hard with a lot of heart.
Size wise the Panthers have their more typical linemen this year. Although two good ones are Sciury 6-4, 260 and Millin 5-11 260. Others from 190, 215, 230 and 237. A couple of those guys are wrestlers, which I think is a big help.

At first glance I think their are about 5-8 wrestlers from Perrys State and Nationally ranked team, but if you go to the scrimmage if you could would you give us updates if possible? thanks

Hey Big Ed....hearing numbers are low. That JV games and freshman games are influx for this year. Perry is letting teams on its schedule know in advance. What have you heard?
