Quintel Kent landed an offer from Michigan after taking the WR MVP at their recent camp. I believe this is the first Power 5 offer for the class of '19.

Looks like promising junior RB Alain Trice has transferred to Cleveland Heights. I expected him to be a contributor this year even with the return of Castleberry, allowing the Eagles to keep fresh legs at the RB position.

Anyone know if Mac Wainwright will be playing this fall? I know he participates on the baseball travel circuit all summer. Already being committed to play baseball for OSU, I wasn't sure if he was going to hang up the football cleats.

Unfortunately transfers are the price of success sometimes. In the early 2000s, St. Ed's had three great running backs, Rashaun Stover was the only one who remained at Ed's and wrote some of the records in the program. The other two went on to star at Rocky River and St. Peter Chanel. It happens and continues to happen when you have a big program that wins a lot.

From Norm Weber's write-up, seems the Eagles performed well yesterday. Defense gave up a TD on McKinley's first play from scrimmage, but then settled in as the offense put up four unanswered scores. Kent, Castleberry, and Formani all found the endzone and the Eagle offense showed a lot of big play potential. Other good piece of news is that Mac Wainwright was suited up and contributing. Offensive skill positions will be strong again.

Can't provide a full depth chart, but based on the camp visit and first scrimmage, we can probably piece most of the starting lineup together.

QB: Garrett Dzuro - 5'11, 200 (Sr.)
RB: Jordan Castleberry - 5'7, 185 (Sr.)
OT: Caleb Herring - 6'7, 300 (Sr.)
OG: Zach Cepis - 6'3, 310 (Sr.)
OC: ?
OG: Crishoun Roberts - 6'1, 300 (Sr.)
OT: Brian Kilbane - 6'3, 275 (Jr.)
TE: Chris Elliott - 6'4, 230 (Sr.)
WR: Quintel Kent - 6'0, 170 (Sr.)
WR: Mackenzie Wainwright - 6'1, 190 (Jr.)
WR: Jack Kurz - 6'1, 190 (Sr.)

DE: Seamus O'Malley - 6'3, 210 (Sr.)
DT: Deeb Alawan - 5'9, 230 (Sr.)
DT: Alex Colangelo - 6'1, 240 (Jr.)
DE: Pat Mullen - 6'2, 235 (Sr.)
OLB: Teon Smith - 5'9, 185 (Sr.)
MLB: Jeff Pietrowski - 6'2, 235 (Jr.)
OLB: Devin Hightower - 6'1, 200 (Jr.)
CB: Logan Nash - 5'10, 170 (Jr.)
FS: Caden Kolesar - 5'11, 190 (Sr.)
SS: Daylen Jernigan - 5'10, 190 (Sr.)
CB: Giovanni Hutchings - 5'10, 185 (Sr.)

Lot of new faces on both sides of the ball, but many of these guys did get action last year. A very good junior class should supplement the seniors. I think we have a good idea of what to expect from this offense with what is returning, but the key to a deep playoff run will be the defense. Sounds like we could see a lot of rotation in the defensive back seven. Kolesar has been playing some corner, Jernigan as a S/LB hybrid, Lawson Nash also at safety. Also looking forward to see how Pietrowski transitions to MLB to replace Fattah. He is a physically gifted player who performed well as a sophomore on the defensive line in spot duty. Great motor. Colangelo is another physical specimen who should be a nice addition to the defensive line this year.

Sounds like a pretty even scrimmage, with a Massillon pick 6 sealing the varsity portion for a 21-14 edge. Definitely a good primer for the opener at Mentor with a "green" Eagle defense facing off against a very talented Massillon offense. Hopefully Dzuro gets to rest that arm up this week and get the passing attack back on track. I anticipate a heavy dose of Castleberry early on to test the Mentor front 7, but that unit was more than up to task in last years playoff game.

Here is Norm Weber's 2018 primer, including projected starters: http://sehseaglesfootball.blogspot.c...ts-dot-st.html

Pretty much what I posted above, with the addition of Devin Crowder at center and Charlie Kirkholder at LB instead of Hightower (who is apparently at Hoban now after a move).

Can anyone give a breakdown of the game? Is the D that bad or was it just another case of not being able to handle the Mentor offense?

I think your Eagles have the personnel on defense, they just need more experience. Kipp and the RB were killing them with both the read option and cutting back. There is no way to prepare for Jacoby and Samac. They are the real deal. Jacoby in particular was dominant.

The Mentor passing games was all screens. It was effective but but not like their running game, obviously.

On another note, Kent was damn near impossible to cover.

Just my opinion, but both schools looked good and more talented than Ignatius.

I agree with PDC. The linebackers and D-line were manhandled by Mentor's o-line with several running plays having the RB or QB get to the secondary completely untouched. I believe they sacked the quarterback 4x, usually bringing some pressure from the linebackers or dbs, no coverage sacks. The unit should get better as they usually do and we are missing some experience in some key positions, I'm not worried about the defense.

The offense can move the ball, once again I worry that we are relying on the big play too much. Kent was impossible to cover and had two bombs thrown to him for TD's where he just outran everyone. A nice drag route opened that they hit once before the last drive and that they just used 3x as Mentor sat back in a prevent. Running game was ok but the O-line had trouble establishing themselves, not really entrenched as the game went on.

In a rematch, we need to bottle up Mentor's qb and make him sit back to throw. He never had to sit in the pocket and find a couple of options, it was usually a quick hitting route or a screen as was said above. I don't know much about Cass Tech but it seems that they are an established program and with our starting qb probably sitting out it will be another big game for St. Ed's.

Its tough to assess this team so early in the season. It was difficult to see them struggle searching for a scheme to stop the Mentor offense. Given that the QB was a sophomore and untested, I might have forced him to throw the ball to get the win. Instead they seemed inclined to drop 7 into pass D giving the young man too much room to advance the ball with his legs. A few missed tackles gave the Mentor offense positive yardage instead of forcing them into 2nd and 3rd down and long situations.

Dzuro seems to have weapons and they moved the ball fairly well. Castleberry has home run potential. However, he tends to sit on a linemen's hip waiting for the backside D to over pursue before really hitting the hole.

The one thing they will have to solve is running the read option when the opposing D has a dominant DE. Jones from Ignatius single handedly destroyed the read option those years he faced the Eagles. Potter seemed to live in the O backfield on Friday evening.

Looking forward to the Cass Tech game...Go Eagles!

It appears the young Eagles D will see a very run oriented Cass Tech visit the nest next weekend. Another early season test for the run D.

https://www.detroitnews.com/story/sp...ic/1100041002/

Keep the Cass Tech O off the field with sustained drives could be a key to a victory.

Go Eagles!

Cass tech comes to town this weekend. Lots of D1 talent. They will remind you of the early Glenville teams that went to the state finals in d1.

Dual threat rb's and a huge offensive line. The defense will have its hands full again. Looking to bounce back from rare week one loss

Haven't been to a game at Lakewood before and from looking at google maps the parking lot doesn't seem to be very big. Am I correct in guessing people are allowed to park on the side streets?

Yes...any side street is an option. Lakewood HS has a public lot off Franklin Avenue just west of Bunts Avenue for a nominal fee.

Arrive early, park in the lot and walk across the street to McGinty’s pub. Drink a beer, order a pizza from Angelos.

Ignatius is getting smoked on Friday.

God forbid the Eagles lose. (I don’t see that happening)

But...

Have these schools ever both started 0-2?

An earlier post stated that the last time both teams lost week 1 was 1967. The last time both started 0-2 was 1960

1958 & 1960 i believe are only two shared 0-2 starts

The revived rivalry in the 70's was played in week 2, preventing that possibility

1966 for 0-1 (if my records are correct).

Thanks for the suggestion. Wish I could, but if I go I won't be getting there until 7 at the earliest. Could get Angelo's for the drive home though.

Some great players from Ed's and Ignatius have had promising college careers ended by ACLs.

Shaun and Kyle Berger come to mind first. Both are outstanding kids who will be just as successful off the field as they were on.

Who else?

Obviously not an ACL, but shoulder issues ended Scott Mcvey's football career.

I feel bad for Crawford, so many injuries for a still very young guy.
