Underwood runs wild as St. Thomas Aquinas beats Tusky Valley

St. Thomas Aquinas 38 Tusky Valley 28

Dennis Underwood seems to get better every week. The 6'2 190 lb. sophomore for Aquinas didn't even see time at the tailback position in the first two games of the season. He was finally inserted into the lineup during the 2nd half of the blowout loss to Green in week 3. Underwood took a handoff against Green and promptly went in for a long touchdown. It was a sign of things to come.

Friday night against playoff-qualifier Tusky Valley, Dennis Underwood and the Knights pulled out a thrilling victory in the 4th quarter. Tusky had beaten St. Thomas 33-14 last year, and STA was seeking revenge.

Aquinas took early leads of 17-0 and 24-7 behind two Underwood scores and a short TD run by Kevin Host, before Tusky pulled within 10 at halftime (24-14). As the 2nd half started, the wheels started to come off for the Knights. STA had three straight 3-and-outs to start the 3rd quarter, which included several fumbled snaps and busted plays. Tusky capitalized and seized the momentum, scoring two touchdowns and taking a 28-24 lead on the Knights.

STA moved the ball downfield on their next possession, thanks to a beautiful pass from QB Jason Chessler to WR Zach Turpin. But the drive appeared to be stalling at the Tusky Valley 29, where STA faced a 3rd and 16 with just about 5 minutes to play in the game. The Knights turned to their workhorse Dennis Underwood. Underwood took the handoff behind left tackle Bryson Bush, broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage and then put on one of the most incredible runs in Aquinas history. The sophomore star broke at least 4 more tackles as he not only picked up the first down, but went all the way in for the winning touchdown! Aquinas led 31-28.

Tusky tried to move down the field for the tying FG, but were stopped on downs near midfield by the Knights defense. STA took over with just a few minutes remaining in the game. Underwood promptly took a handoff and raced by the Tusky defense for his 4th TD of the day to seal the win 38-28.

On the night, Underwood had only 12 carries for an amazing 254 yards and 4 touchdowns! Underwood's combination of size and speed; power and moves is amazing to watch. And he's still learning the position and improving every week. With the win, STA moves to 3-3 on the year and back in the thick of the playoff picture in Region 17.
