Colt turnovers help Warriors to rout

Ontario 56, Bellville Clear Fork 7

ONTARIO -- The Bellville Clear Fork Colts committed seven turnovers and five led to Ontario touchdowns as the host Warriors whalloped the Colts 56-7 in the latest contest between the two rival Richland County schools.

Five of the Clear Fork (1-2) turnovers resulted in a total of 35 Ontario (2-1) points, as the Warriors scored on their first six possessions of the game. The main concern for Ontario was how well the offense would run without senior back Josh Ohl, but backs Ian Craze, Nate Winkler and Brian Mabry, and quarterback Ben Perry silenced all such worries.

Behind Craze, Winkler and Mabry, the rushing attack racked up 194 yards compared to 57 for the Colts. Craze carried nine times for 78 yards, Winkler seven times for 52 and Mabry 13 times for 37. Perry completed 6-of-7 passes for 79 yards and a touchdown while adding 12 yards on the ground on four carries. Craze topped the Warrior receivers with three catches for 37 yards while Josh Anton added two receptions for 54 yards.

Ontario's defense received help from a pair of wild snaps from center on Clear Fork punts, which helped keep the Colts offense sputtering. The combination of stalwart Warrior defense and Colt mistakes kept Clear Fork from gaining positive yardage. The Colts total offense did not reach a positive total until the fourth quarter.

Craze started the scoring with a 17-yard touchdown run on the Warriors' first drive, then threw a halfback pass 42 yards to Anton to close out the second Ontario drive. The first of two wild snaps from center resulted in a fumble recovery by lineman Jamie Perkins and, three plays later, Perry carried the ball over from nine yards out, giving Ontario a 21-0 lead after one quarter.

Another high snap early in the second quarter resulted in a desperation punt by Clear Fork's Josh Fenton from the end zone that rolled out of bounds at the Colt eight-yard line. Craze carried around the left side on the next play from scimmage to give Ontario a 28-0 lead just 24 seconds into the second quarter.

Colt quarterback Derek Fry was then picked off by Ontario's Brian Weirich on the next Clear Fork play, and Winkler capped a seven-play, 67-yard drive with a six-yard touchdown run with 8:18 still left in the first half.

On the very next Colt play, Fry made an ill-advised pitch that sailed behind his running back and was picked up by Ontario's Eric Russlee at the 10. Russlee fumbled again at the six after a hit by the Colts' Chuck Steelman, but Brett Boyce picked up the ball at the two and ran in it for the score. The touchdown gave the Warriors a 42-0 lead with 8:01 still to play in the second quarter.

Craze would score again in the third period on a 23-yard pass play from Perry, and after a Craze interception late in the third, Bryce Rayburn added an 11-yard touchdown run early in the fourth to drive in the final nail. Clear Fork scored with 24 seconds left on a two-yard run by Fenton.

Josh Fraley led the Colt rushers with five fourth-quarter carries for 46 yards while Justin Fraley added four rushes for 26 yards, also in the fourth quarter. Fry completed just 3-of-15 passes for 53 yards with three interceptions. Tyler Doup, Keith Swanger and Josh Lang each had one reception, Doup for 40 yards, Swanger for nine and Lang for four.

Steve Feix also had an interception for the Warriors, who open North Central Conference play this Friday at Lucas. Clear Fork returns home for a non-conference contest against Columbus Bishop Hartley.
