Panthers Break Out Over Central Catholic

Article Courtesy of BIG ED and The Perry Panther Football website.

Massillon Perry 57, Canton Central Catholic 0

The Panthers took the opening kickoff and drove from their 33 to the central 4 when they coughed up the ball. Central turned right around and returned the favor at the six, fumbling on their first play. After a holding call, two incomplete passes and a run, the Panthers settled on a Josh Shimek's 22 yard field goal. The Panthers defense then rose to occasion as they stopped Central on a fourth and one at the Perry 43 as the first quarter ended. The Panthers then drove 57 yards with HB Kevin Woodard taking it in for the score from 11 yards out. Shimek's PAT was good and the Panthers led 10-0.

The Panthers broke the game wide open with 21 second quarter points, opening up a 31-0 halftime lead. In that second quarter Chris Kortis scored next for the Panthers capping a 62 yard drive, as he smashed in from the 2. After another Central fumble at their own 45, three plays later Kortis took off on a 33 yard scoring jaunt. Closing out the first half scoring was QB Anthony Swick who knifed his way into the endzone from 6 yards out. This TD was set up after Matt Carona intercepted a Fred Harold pass at the Crusaders 33 yard line.

The Crusaders took the second half kickoff and drove to the Perry 44 yard line. On a fourth and one, the Panther defense swarmed all over HB Curtis Shepard for no gain. Six plays later Chris Kortis scored his third TD of the night on a 15 yard run, where he broke two tackles and dragged two other Crusaders into the endzone. Marc Englebach scored the final third quarter TD on a 41 yard scamper. Josh Shimek's kick was good and it was 45-0 Perry. Shimek was perfect on the evening hitting all six of his PAT attempts.

In the fourth quarter, junior Ryan Jedel scored twice on a two yard run and a electrifying 57 yard run to finish the scoring for the Panthers. Both conversion kicks were no good, making the final 57-0.

Some final stats; the Panthers had 17 first downs to Central's 5, 432 yards rushing to Central's 110 and in the passing department the Panthers were 3 of 8 for 32 yards, while the Crusaders were 3 of 9 for 31 yards and 2 interceptions. Next week the Panthers travel to Follis Field for their last away game of the 02 season to take on the Wooster Generals, who upset Jackson 23-15. The Panthers now start a stretch of four tough league games, that if they are to stay in contention for the league title and the playoffs, they must win. The Generals should be really fired up after knocking off the Polar Bears. Perry must now tighten up the chin straps and turn it up a notch from here on out. Go Perry...beat Wooster!
