Strip sends Golden Eagles past Braves

Sunbury Big Walnut 13, Lewis Center Olentangy 10

LEWIS CENTER -- It could only have happened on Friday the 13th -- with the game seemingly in hand, the Olentangy Braves watched their victory slip away in the final minutes.

Big Walnut defensive end Ryan Kofron stripped Olentangy running back Jason Hughes of the ball at the Eagle seven and sprinted 93 yards for the winning touchdown with 1:10 to play, giving the visiting Golden Eagles a 13-10 victory over the rival Braves Friday night in the latest round of their Delaware County rivalry.

The score marks the ninth time in the past 12 meetings where the game has been decided by seven points or less. It also marked the first Olentangy (2-2) loss in their new home stadium, Braves Field.

But it really shouldn't have been this way. Olentangy controlled the line of scrimmage and seemingly moved the ball at will on Big Walnut (3-1), but when they tried to score, more often than not, something happened to stop themselves -- whether an interception, a fumble or a penalty.

That wasn't the case on their first drive of the game. The Braves marched quickly downfield, using less than the first three minutes of the game and just seven plays to travel 77 yards. Jason Hughes carried the ball over from eight yards out to put Olentangy ahead 7-0 just 2:41 in.

But on the ensuing kickoff, the Golden Eagles caught their first break. Braves kicker Craig Donohue clearly kicked the ball into the end zone, where Eagle return man Brad Rhoden caught it two yards deep, but the official did not whistle the ball dead. Rhoden returned the ball to the Eagle 30, and a face mask call against the Braves moved it to the 45, giving the Braves 25 extra yards they should never have had.

Big Walnut took advantage, using 10 plays and just under four minutes to drive the 55 yards. Eagle quarterback Andy Stein carried the ball over from a yard away to tie the score with 5:20 left in the first quarter.

After that, Olentangy ran the ball almost exclusively and drove into Big Walnut territory on both of their drives in the second quarter, but the first came to an end when Big Walnut's Mark Kemmeling intercepted a Robby Thayer pass at the Eagle 15 and took it back to the 25. After the play, Olentangy was hit with a pair of penalties after the play, one for illegal helmet contact, one for unsportsmanlike conduct, and the ball ended up at the Braves' 45, but the Eagles could do nothing with it.

Olentangy ran out the final 5:46 of the first half taking the ball from its own 26 following the Big Walnut punt, to the Eagle 15, when with fourth down and five seconds left in the second quarter, Donahue drilled a 32-yard field goal to break the tie as the clocked ticked to zero.

The Braves pushed Big Walnut back from their 20 to their five on their first drive of the second half, and on the ensuing punt, Matt Butler took the ball all the way back to the Eagle 11, but another penalty negated the return.

Big Walnut stopped the Braves on three plays, but themselves were hit with a penalty for roughing Donahue on his punt. Big Walnut's defense stopped Olentangy again after that, though, when Kemmeling again intercepted Thayer and returned the ball 19 yards to the Eagle 40.

The rest of the period, and most of the fourth, were marked by stalled drives and punts until Big Walnut took over at their own 20 with just under four minutes left. The Eagles gained a first down after three plays, but following two incomplete passes and an illegal procedure call on Big Walnut, Olentangy took the ball back when Jared Ison picked off Stein at the Eagle 42 and returned it back to the 20.

Olentangy took its time running plays after taking over possession with 2:18 to play. Hughes carried twice and gained five yards, forcing the Eagles to call time out at 1:29. On the next play, however, Hughes broke through the line and ran for a first down, but Kofron came in from behind and grabbed the ball away from Hughes at the seven just before the Braves ball carrier's knee hit the ground.

Kofron then turned and made a bee-line for the Braves goal 93 yards away to put the Eagles up for the first and only time.

The excitement still wasn't over, though. On Kofron's ensuing kickoff, Olentangy returner Andrew Terwilliger took the ball at the Olentangy six and sprinted through the Eagle special teams coverage, but Kofron kept Terwilliger from going the distance, tripping him up at the Braves 45.

But Olentangy threw three incomplete passes and gained just three yards on a Hughes third-down run on its final drive, and Big Walnut used three plays to force Olentangy to use its final two time outs before running out the clock.

Hughes finished the game with 155 yards on the ground and his one touchdown on 31 carries, outgaining the Golden Eagle offense by more than 2-to-1. Brady Collins added 23 yards on nine carries. Thayer hit 4-of-9 passes for 87 yards, with Hughes catching two for for 48 yards.

Stein completed 6-of-16 passes for 69 yards, including four to Josh Becker for 30. But the running game, so potent in the last two games, gained just 18 net yards. Rhoden finished with 19 on 12 carries while Jayme Wright added 11 yards on six rushes.

The Braves will travel to Gauthier Field in Delaware to take on the Hayes Pacers next Friday, while the Eagles play host to Galloway Westland.
