1986 I think they may have won or shared the Metro Championship, but I' m not sure. I had a lot of friends that played on that team.

I'm pretty sure that 1986 they went 4-6 but I'm not positive, so I didn't post it. I know for sure they didn't win the Metro because the 1982 season was the last time they won a league prior to 2004. I'm going to add the league champs info to the post.

If I remember correctly Gary Vituccio was a guy they brought in to turn the football program around. He was an assistant from Notre Dame if I am not mistaken. I just remember his gold.

Rumor had it that he was paid big money to coach. I bet that did not turn into a Tallmadge tradition.

Gary was brought in to hopefully turn the football program around. He was buddies with then AD Frank Jessie. He did have quite an impressive resume which I believe included time working with the Tennessee Vols and also as a scout with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He had also coached at Walsh prior to any of that. I do not believe that he was paid big money, especially since he was not a teacher in the school system. Jeff Ferguson's first year with the team was as an assistant coach during Vituccio's second and last year. I believe that Vituccio is now coaching high school football in the Pittsburgh area.

Interestingly, if anyone watched "Bound For Glory" on ESPN, that is the school (Montour) that Gary Vituccio coached at a couple years ago (2000 & 2001). Do a Google search on him and you will see that he is working as a township manager in Pennsylvania.

btw, does anyone have the records when Jeff Ferguson was there? I know that those were decent years but I don't have them at the moment.

Bumping this back to the top. Maybe someone can fill in some missing data. Looking for records during Jeff Ferguson's years? Any data from the 60s or before would be great too.

Tallmadge Varsity Football 1982 Metro Co-Champs

This was during my Freshman year, school year 1982-83 back when 9th grade was at Central Junior High School on North Ave. I was Varsity Football Manager, waterboy, ballboy, go for, ankle taper, game filmer, you name it, during 8th grade threw 11th grade. I played my Senior year, 1985 season. However, I pretty much only attended T.H.S. to be envolved in the football program. Eighth grade threw 10th grade I was also Varsity Basketball Manager. If it wasn't for my envolvement with these two programs, I believe to this day that I would not have finished High School. I am still very greatfull to this day, what Tallmadge High School gave to me and allowed me to be active in a proud organization. I graduated in 1986, the following years and scores are true and acurate to this date. Anyone with corrections for inaccuracies, please post.

The Following Seasons were final results as follows, under Head Coach Tony Kijanko:

* Kent Roosevelt LOST 33-6
* Ravenna (Parents Night) LOST 27-6
* At Springfield LOST 20-0

* At Nordonia WON 7-3
At Hoban WON 21-13
* At Kent Roosevelt LOST 14-13
* At Ravenna WON 31-29

North LOST 6-0

* Stow LOST 35-22
* At Nordonia WON 52-28
At Hoban WON 28-24
* At Kent Roosevelt WON 34-27

Quarterback Joe Mayfield set a school record for passing yards with 2,410. This record stood for 27 years until 2012 when it was broken by over 2,600 yards passing. Congratulations to the new record holder.

1985 (2-8) (*Metro League 1-5)

Field WON 7-0
At Ellet LOST 28-13
North LOST 34-12
* Ravenna (Home Coming) LOST 26-16

* At Stow WON 13-0
* Nordonia (Parents Night) LOST 41-0
Hoban LOST 34-12
* Kent Roosevelt LOST 54-6

The most frustrating game every year was against Akron North. We lost to them 5 straight years in a row and they were alot to blame why most of our seasons finished lop sided. Prior to the 1982 season, playing our opener at Field on Sept. 3, 1982 we entered that game with a 17 game losing streak dated back to Sept. 1980. I still remember back in the day when wins were hard to come by in Tallmadge, and very few and far between. To this day, I still believe our 14-6 win at Field on a fatefull evening on Sept. 3, 1982 broke a losing CURSE! Which allowed the upcoming under classman to win a few games during my years of attendance. Thanks again to Tallmadge High School for these great memories that no one can take away from me. I wish there was someway we could organize a Football reunion at the old High School and reminisce what we accomplished together during the 1982
Metro League Champioship Season. The last year the Metro Trophy came home to Tallmadge.

I believe so. He was a coach when I played at Hoban in late 80's. Looks like he went to Tallmadge after that.

Interestingly, that question was from 8 years ago. He's moved up to Superintendent now. And yes, that is the same person.

You could probably find the answers to the question about records through a little research at the local library.
