But, it's incredibly common for the run through the banner happens right before the coin toss and kickoff.

I think also we have some 'patriots' who never paid attention before suddenly getting upset because they just now care.
That's not the way it works at the games I attend.

The coin toss takes place before the home team even goes into the locker room for the last time. Well before the kickoff.

I have never been to a high school game that had the teams on the field for the national anthem (I guess that I can recall). I have been to at least 500 games over the last 20 years.
What teams are on the field for the anthem?
I am guessing it is region/ league type of thing. I just have never noticed it and it intrigues me.

It's been said that the Federal League dictates that teams will be on the field for the national anthem.

Massillon- Louisville was the only one that wasn’t. There were communication problems in that Massillon wasn’t told when to come out. But after what happened with how Louisville ran out I can see why there was a “communication issue”.
But the other 18 games I went to both teams were out.

Let's keep this discussion about football. Then you can post about the high school football program you support.

I played in the 70's and we always took off our helmets and put our hand over our heart during the National Anthem.

That's the official coin toss. The one right before kickoff is always ceremonial. Has been for a long time.

Our hometown team plays the anthem immediately before kick off. Both teams are on the field, and kick off takes place as soon as the anthem ends. Very patriotic, and it’s quite popular here. GO TIGERS !!!

Yep. There's no rule on when exactly the coin toss must take place. Some hold it almost as soon as the teams arrive and the flip right before the kickoff is just for show. Many states have two coin tosses. Texas and PA does this. The choices made right at kickoff are real, but the actual flip is usually 15-30 minutes before the game most times.

I was at the game, something you can never claim, everyone from WY left the bench then minutes later all of them were told to leave the field and go to the lockeroom.

Yep. Been going to Ohio HS games for 30+ years and have never seen a “ceremonial” flip post-locker-room-pre-kickoff, be it home, away, regular season, playoff, or otherwise. And certainly never anything that wasn’t done at midfield under the gaze of the crowd. And I generally show up an hour or more before kickoff, many times even before the teams and officials have taken the field for warm-ups. It seems silly to try to recreate the coin toss. Why bother?! Not saying it isn’t done somewhere, but in Ohio... ??? Someone from NWO, SWO correct me if you’ve seen it done differently.

Also, as far as the WY “disrespecting the anthem:” they seemed to have just exited the locker room and had 2-3 minutes left to take the field. They were standing on the pad at the flag end of the stadium as the band began to play. As punk as they were, I don’t think it was disrespect as much as bad/awkward timing. But who knows—maybe someone looking over tha wall at that end of the stands got a better look at their demeanor?

the GWOC dictates when the visiting team takes the field, the home team, and then the national anthem. Both teams are on the field.

the SWBL does not. Usually both teams are still in the locker room.

2 leagues that I see alot of. Same region of the State. Very different though. (I'm thinking the GWOC had some problems about who takes the field first, which led to the strict rules)

OHSAA dictates that the coin flip occur at 20 minutes prior to kickoff UNLESS both teams agree to an earlier flip. There is nothing that states the coin toss has to be at midfield.
