Since they just jumped to Div 1 effective this fall and are loaded with Division 1 College talent I believe they will keep the home and home games they scheduled with StX for the next 2 seasons.

I agree with you....I think he is a 2 year starter at CB.
I have him and Johnny Marocco penciled in at the corners heading into camp

Ferguson had at least 5 interceptions on JV last year, he has very good instincts and breaks on the ball very well. I'm not sure who is coming back on varsity that plays corner, but based on what I saw out of him last year he will definitely have a shot at breaking the starting lineup

He returned one for a TD vs LaSalle JV.
On varsity Paul and Stallworth took most of the snaps at the corners but Morrocco filled in for both when they were hurt, needed a breather or missed a game.
He finished the year with 19 tackles and an interception (vs. Cathedral in week 4) and had his best game in the regional final vs Sycamore with 6 tackles and a sack (Stallworth was out)

Defense

Front 6:

DEs: Bacevich and Jefferson

NG: Heyob, Gretz, Mesue or Dirksing

LBs: Childs, Kiessling, Mesue, Dirksing, Taylor, MacDonald, Arthur, O’Malley

Heyob wrestled at 220, what will be his football playing weight?
Can Mesue move from down lineman to LB?
Could Childs move from LB to Adjuster?

Secondary:

CBs: Morrocco and Ferguson

Adjuster/Safeties: Childs, Adair, Kirby, Baxter, Johnson, Bridges, Glines, Sandifer, Tongdangjou, Hundley and Newman

Kirby and Adair saw varsity action on special teams and nickel defenses.
Adair recorded 6 tackles vs LaSalle and 4 tackles vs Pick Central
Baxter, Sandifer and Tongdanjou were on varsity scout team last season - some could move to WR where there is already a glut of talent
Johnson, Bridges and Glines started on JV last season.
Hundley and Newman played JV as freshmen last year initially splitting time at RB but at midseason Newman was moved to safety and Hundley was primary RB
As a sophomore Ben Glines switched to defense to get “best 11” on the field and then switched back to RB his junior and senior seasons.

Congrats to former Bomber football players Nathan Kappers and Michael Cleary, who chose to focus on baseball and are playing key roles for the GCL leading varsity baseball team.

As sophomores on the JV football team Kappers was backup QB and Cleary played free safety.

Kappers (6’4” and 200lbs) is the ace of the pitching staff with a minuscule ERA of 0.75 and leads the GCL in victories and strikeouts with 5 and 27 respectively.

Cleary is the starting centerfielder and has a 0.283 batting average.

Bomber football players from the state championship team on the varsity baseball club include center Sam Klare, DB Grant Kirby and DE Ben Coffaro.

The Class of 2020 (this fall’s sophomores) had 7 players on JV last season as freshmen.

What will be their impact on varsity this season?

How will they compare to classes since 2000 whose sophomores made significant varsity contributions?

Class of 2020: ????????

Class of 2015: NG Simeon Lane (Princeton), LB Cole Jones (Army), RB Ben Glines (Boston College), LB Justin Hilliard (Ohio State)

Class of 2012: DE/LB Nate Gerbus (Miami OH), C Brandyn Cook (Miami OH), RB Connor Hundley (Akron)

Class of 2008: WR/K Dan Milligan (Cincinnati), LB Nick Schneider (Yale), LB Lou Miller (Columbia), S Fred Craig (Stanford/Penn), RB Darius Ashley (Louisville)

Class of 2002: QB Marty Mooney (Yale/Notre Dame), OL Kyle Ralph (North Carolina), LB Matt Vogele (Miami)

After StX baseball team won the GCL title yesterday quotes from Bomber coach Bob Sherlock.....

"Kappers is an exceptional athlete.
Cleary is about as close to the perfect baseball player as you're ever going to get"

Any chance Kappers returns to the football field for his senior year to be part of the repeat?

There's a 2020 transfer LB that came in at Christmas break that could factor in somewhere.

BTW, it seems people on here think that coach Specht leaving is a forgone conclusion. Any truth to that or just rumor due to his youngest graduating?

Not a foregone conclusion but with his youngest son's graduation it becomes a greater possibility.

A 6'4" 200lb exceptional athlete would be a great target for Wolf.

Other big targets include seniors Max Rueve (6'5") and John Taul (6'3") and sophomore Marshall Lange (6'3").

The Bombers top returning receivers (Specht, Wittrock, Fox and Kreimer) are sure handed, fast, athletic and 6'0" or less.

So X has 7 receivers to choose from? Not bad. I thought Fox was an RB. Is he making the transition or pulling double duty when they need him to?

Per Mike Dyer Facebook
Link to Podcast of Specht with Dyer and Popovich (Don't have to be a Insider)
http://www.wcpo.com/sports/high-scho...chool-football

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Summary:

Still enjoys coaching at high school level, especially at his alma mater
5 losses last season all vs nationally ranked teams
Memories of last season: injuries, position moves, adversity, coaching staff stayed positive, played hard but not smart, 3OT playoff wins
Schedule based on relationships with coaches at Cathedral, Colerain and St. Ignatius
Prefers local Friday night matches

Season transition begins at banquet: say goodbye to seniors and turn it over to juniors - begin in weight room
Senior leaders: son Cameron (“tough kid, energetic, loves to challenge me, not colleges love his film but he's not very big, going to miss him when he graduates - maybe Specht not leaving?)
"If I have to police the locker room or weight room we’re not going to be successful"

Defense: Return 5 experienced players in front 6: Bacevich, Jefferson, Mesue, Childs, Kiessling; have to revamp secondary
UC Coach Fickell: “visible, new UC staff is around, not seen this energy since Butch Jones, changed after him”
Early signing date December instead of February? Per Specht system is broken, not a fan of players committing and then rescinding.
Not a fan of elite camps (ego driven), ok with camps for attracting scholarship offers
NCAA decision making needs to involve input from high school coaches.
Money problem college level: cited LSU and Stanford players sitting out bowl games to avoid injury entering the NFL draft

Concussion issue: helmet was designed to prevent skull fractures, not concussions; solution is getting head out of tackle via leverage tackling “rugby tackle”; concussion is a part of every sport and likes making conscious efforts to reduce citing Heads Up Football: tackling techniques, heat, hydration and response times.

He and his 2 boys played football since 6 years old and shared a passion for the game.
Facebook Live Question: any freshmen or sophomore younger players we should be aware of?
"We have a lot of impressive young kids but we like to focus on the seniors they’ve earned the right to be talked about: Bacevich, CSpecht, Wolf, Childs, Deters, Kirby, Adair, Jefferson, Mesue, Fox etc
Roster size: Varsity 104 (Seniors and Juniors), not sure how many sophomores will be on varsity roster
Going to get together with new Princeton coach Mike Daniels to schedule 7 on 7, will have another after that and then 8 days of camp starting Monday July 17th

Takeaways from Specht's discussion with Dyer and Popo were...
1. Specht sounded like he intends to continue as head coach at StX after this season.
2. Camp starts July 17th; 7 on 7 with Princeton and another team to be scheduled.
3. Varsity roster at 104. Probably about 6 sophomores will play varsity to bring total to @110

Freshman Wyatt Hudepohl got the varsity win tonight over Springboro in the baseball team's final regular season game.
The 15yo's fastball was clocked @90mph.

Another football standout in the class of 2020 frosh Tucker Hundley finished the JV baseball season hitting over .400.

Let's hope nobody talks these young men out of playing both football and baseball.
I know Specht won't.....he encourages guys to play other season sports.

Sounds like Wyatt Hudepohl is a heck of an athlete. Hopefully he doesn't feel compelled to select a single sport, although if he has a 90 mph fastball as a freshmen it would seem like baseball might be his better college option. Either way lets hope he stays healthy and sticks with multiple sports as long as possible.

This article written a year ago when Hudepohl was 14 yo he was already throwing in the mid 80's.

https://youth1.com/football/1942362-...-watch-in-ohio

This is from the StX website: "On Monday, St. Xavier traveled to Springboro HS to take on the Panthers.
Freshman Wyatt Hudepohl got the start for the Bombers and was very good.
He pitched 5 innings and allowed 0 runs and only 3 hits while not allowing a walk and striking out 2 hitters.

I think he and Hundley will excel at both sports all 4 years at StX.
Still holding out hope that Kappers puts the pads back on for his senior season to haul in a few of Wolf's passes.

In addition to the state championship in football the Bombers have won state championships in golf and swimming this school year.

This weekend the pursuit for additional state championships continues for all 5 spring sports.

In Lacrosse the Bombers are the #1 seed in Region 4 and face Lakota West this Saturday in the Regional Quarterfinal at 5pm at StX.
Football players on the team include Carl Grimm, Brady Stoll, Chad Adair, Matt Fox, Johnny Morocco, Nick Shamsi, Riley Rueve, Josh Glaser and Andy Kendall

In Baseball the Bombers face Lebanon in the District Finals on Saturday at Western Hills High School.
Football players on the team include Sam Klare, Wyatt Hudepohl, Grant Kirby, Nick Meyer and Ben Coffaro

In Track district championships continue today at Mason with several football players competing for a state championship.
Micah Farrar as a member of the GCL record setting 4 x 200 relay, the 4 x 100 relay and the individual 100 meter and 200 meter dashes.
BJ Ferguson competes as a member of the 4 x 100 relay and the individual long jump.
Sean Mesue competes in the discus

In Tennis the Bombers have 5 players at Districts this weekend at the tennis center in Mason.
Freshman Ronit Hiryur the #2 seed in singles and doubles teams #1 seed Pete Schulteis/Max DeCurtins and #2 seed Cam Goeppinger/Joe Beischel.

In Volleyball the Bombers take their 19-4 record into the 2nd round of post season play.
Junior slot receiver Henry Huber is the lone football player on the team.

It could be record setting school year for state championships for StX

GO BOMBERS!

So, no Kappers. He won't return to play this year?

Since he didn't play football last year he's probably zoned in on baseball.
He's the ace of the pitching staff this year as a junior and likely to play in college.
Not sure if he would be on anyone's radar for MLB draft.

I saw him play football his first 2 years at StX as backup QB and IMHO he had all the tools to be a D1 QB (size, strong and accurate arm, mobile)
Happened to be at StX the same time as Clifford, Wolf and Hudepohl.

Not sure of his level of passion for the game of football outside of playing QB.
Most guys who switch from QB go to WR or TE to get on the playing field.

In 2009 Alex Longi (6'3" 200lb), point guard on varsity basketball team, came out for football his senior year and turned out to be Luke Massa's favorite target that season. Kappers is similar size and athletic ability as Longi.

At least football would give him another option at securing a D1 scholarship which these days can equate to saving $250K over 4 years in tuition.

In 2004 Dominic Randolph was behind Buckeye recruit Rob Schoenhoft and went on to Holy Cross and set school passing records and then was undrafted free agent with the NY Giants

So maybe he will be at camp on July 17th....it's less than 2 months away
