What is also amazing is that 15:43 took 5th place just a little over ten years ago. I don't know what the weather was that day and it was a different course but it would take a monsoon for 5th place to be that slow tomorrow.
Check out the girls winning team from 2006. Great team, course is more difficult, the course when muddy was 10-20 seconds slower, and more wind.

But overall the girls have gotten much, much, much better the last 10-20 years. Training + middle school state meet and having mom's that were athletes or runners have helped women progress tremendously.

The course was much softer than anticipated when I made my corrections; though, I don't know that I could have taken that into account. I am sure that it had an impact as it's unlikely runners on each team respond in similar manners to more challenging conditions. To all who made it to the meet, congratulations! To all who rose to the challenge - well done!

I generally agree that:

Training - realizing girls are capable of running fast, and that they aren't going to break in half if they run more than 3 or 4 miles.

and

Better coaching - how often in the past have girls coaches for the fringe sports been assigned as afterthoughts by many HS athletic depts?

have improved the girls competition.

Genetics don't hurt either, but there are plenty of successful ones out there that don't have that going for them.

Kudos to my good friend Matt Sidel at Jackson and the head coach, et. al, for getting their team back in working form to redeem their tough day last week. I know they were looking to prove that they were stronger than Boardman showed.

Kevin Walsh would be the aforementioned head coach at Jackson. Quite honestly, Jackson couldn't have run any worse than they did at regionals. To still finish 5th and advance somewhat comfortably last week shows how good they were. It's easy to look good when everyone on the team is running well, but only the really good teams can place well when that many of their runners are not having a good race. Jackson looked like top 5 material early in the season but couldn't match the front-running ability that Saturday's top 5 teams had. That worried me going into the meet. Frankly, I'm not sure Jackson ran that well as a team on Saturday. They may be viewing this one as a missed opportunity; although nobody was going to beat Hudson today given how well they performed.

We should all be so lucky (or so crazy). Psycho_dad nearly nailed it!

The only part of his forecast that didn't come true was Mason's 5th runner coming in 4 places under Hudson's total team score. That's darned fine work by one of the greatest veterans and students of this sport.

If you keep that up he will develop a superiority complex.

Congrats to the Davidson boys on a great showing! I'm sure they'll get over the hump again some time soon.

In Division I, Hilliard Davidson took runner-up for the third time in the past 10 years. Hudson turned in a low score of 73 points to easily beat the Wildcats (143).

“The guys might be a little bummed out now that we didn’t win, but ultimately, I think they’ll be tickled they got up on the podium,” Wildcats coach Pat Schlecht said. “Third-places hurt a lot worse than seconds, and we’ve got a few of those, too. Ultimately, Hudson’s No. 4 and 5 guys were a little bit better than ours and we were aware of that coming in. We were hoping we could make it closer, though.”

Got to love the optimism from the coach.

"Ultimately, Hudson’s No. 4 and 5 guys were a little bit better than ours"

Just a tad better at 4 and 5. Oh, and 1,2,3,6 and 7 too!

If we only had to score 3 against their 5, we could have gotten them. If they had to score their 6 against our 5, we had a fighting chance. Our 4 and 5 only had to improve a little itty bitty bit and beat our 3 and be real close to our 2 for us to beat them. It's as easy as that! It was that close. Better at 4 and 5.

Next time the newspaper can use your quote instead.

Congrats to the Wildcats on yet another runner-up finish. Truly something special the runners can always look back at and cherish as life moves on.

Yeah, I clearly was the delusional one in this case. In my defense I said if they ran lights out it wouldn't be close. I would say that Hudson equaled or exceeded their season best time for their top kids, which most if not all the other teams did not. They clearly were the best team. Good coaching delivers best running at the right time. Great job Hudson.
