Awesome

Has there ever been a more dominant performance by an individual in the State final than Solon's Olivia Howell??

2015 - FR - 5th place
2016 - SO - 3rd place
2017 - JR - 2nd place
2018 - SR - ??

Here's hoping for the title next year!!

How about Patty Metzler

Freshman 3rd
Sophomore 1st
Junior. 1st
Senior. 1st

Sunny Olding. 2,1,1,1

K Radlewich. 2:1,1,1, and ran 16:59 at the State Meet

I am a HUGE Olivia fan...I’m not betting against her becoming the fastest 1600 girl runner in Ohsaa history...her fragile feet are probably holding her back right know from getting in the necessary miles to go sub 17....

Brooklyn Ridder 1,2,2,1

This list will get rather long. Bizarri from Mason had a great run.

Yes it will. For boys: Brian Hesson I believe went 8,1,1,1 in D3 from 1989-1992. JJ White went 16, 2, 1, 1 in D1 over the same time period. Probably the best boys performer Zach Wills I think was 4th as a freshman and went 4, 1, 1, 1.

For boys I was thinking Sharsu or Nicholas from the old timers. Sharsu was 14th and Nicholas 8th as freshmen, then 3 time champs each. There were separate team and individual races back then so Nicholas would have had to beat Zishka for two of his three championships if they were combined. I cannot find Zishka at all as a freshman. He was 4-1-1 from soph on. Best I can find for boys is same as mathking, Wills from Mason 4-1-1-1.

As a freshmen, John did not run with the Lancaster varsity in 1976. I can't remember if this was the state-wide rule.

Reading the previous post again; if Sharsu and Pittman competed in the HS championships as freshmen, then maybe it was just a "Lancaster thing". In those years, Lancaster freshmen attended a separate school, with grades 10 through 12 attending the high school.

So maybe Zishka didn't run as a freshman but was 4th as a soph so he couldn't have improved upon Wills 4-1-1-1. He would have had Sharsu in his race when he was a freshman. A fact that is stunning to me is Pittman ran 8:46 and under 4:10 but did not win a cross country or track state title in any event. He was a freshman NCAA champ in the steeple. He ran in a very tough period of Ohio individuals. What place was Pittman as a freshman?

Though not quite at the same level as Wills and some of the other guys, Middletown's Jeff See had an impressive run starting with his freshman year in 2001. He finished 12th that year and followed it up with another 12th place in his sophomore year before winning in both his junior and senior years. In See's freshman year, the times were really fast. Twenty-three guys went under 16:00 in DI. For contrast, 18 guys went under 16:00 this year. I know that in '01 the meet was held at Scioto Downs and this year the course was soft and a bit slow, but I thought that stat was impressive.

The fact that NTR was soft this year makes Conant Smith's & Dustin Horter's run all that much more impressive. I was really impressed with Conant. If things go well for him next year from a health and training standpoint, and the conditions are right, he will break the NTR course record. After his 3rd place in his sophomore year and a runner up this year, Conant is well on his way to joining the elite ranks of Ohio distance running history.

It's really weird to think that Middletown was DI team runner up in 2003 and State champs in 2004. That is a school that has really fallen in terms of its athletic teams. It used to be a contender in so many sports. Changing demographics, I guess.

Not even looking at results..

Stephanie Morgan (Not sure she ran in Ohio as a Frosh)
Emily Infeld
Emily Thompson
Emily Grad (Top ten at least all 4 years. Maybe top 5 three of them)

Katie Gillespie I think was injured as a soph, but had to be top 4 frosh and Jr. year and won as a senior. Also. think they fluctuated between D3 and D2 with Woodridge back then.

Can't remember if Bridget Franek ran CC as a freshman or soph. She played soccer.

Julie and Joanna Diaz (Southeast)
83 84 85 86
Julie 2 1 1 1

Joanna 1 3 2 2

I might be wrong about that. I thought they were freshman in 82 and went 2,4. So I must be remembering 85 and 86 as the same year and it was 85. I think Joanna went 2 and Julie went 4 in 82. Even so, impressive.

Tony Carna had to have 3 wins from Caldwell

3rd-1st-1st-1st from '92-'95. Doesn't get much better than that.

Franek's first year of XC was her junior year. She finished 2nd to Brittany Tinsley, IIRC.

Yes, Ohio has a handful of more dominant individuals than Olivia Howell.

Didn't Bob Kennedy get 2nd as a Sophomore and won the XC titles his Junior and Senior year?

Patty Metzler went 3,1,1,1 from 79-82

There has been a few more than a handful.

I think that I have an answer for why John Ziska (Lancaster) did not run with the varsity at his high school when he was a freshmen. If Lancaster had the same building set-up as Tiffin Columbian then the answer is simple. Tiffin Columbian at that time was a sophomore, junior, senior building. The junior high schools (East and West) housed 7th, 8th, and 9th graders. The OHSAA did not allow 9th graders in a junior high building to compete at the high school level even though freshmen, of course, at a 9th - 12th building could.

In the mid 1980s the OHSAA started letting 9th graders in a junior high setting complete at the high school level. I remember the years (before that rule change) when our freshmen at East and West Jr. High couldn't find enough meets because they were one of the few remaining 7th - 9th buildings left in Ohio!

Coach... that's exactly what happened. John ran for Stansbury as a 9th grader, then was a part of those great Lancaster teams his last 3 years of high school.

A slight clarification...

Stanbery was a Freshman only school from 1973 to 2005.

Grades 6,7 & 8 attended the two remaining JHs... 10, 11, 12 graders attended the HS.

Prior to 1973, Stanbery was one of three Lancaster JHs, each with just 7th and 8th grade students.

Anyone know of CJ Robinson (Reading) results from '78-'81 cross country? She was Kinney National champion in '81 with her 16:41 5K

I do not remember Connie Jo Robinson running in 78. She finished 7th in 79. she was 2nd behind Metzler in 80 and won the team race while Metzler won the individual race in 81.

Peggy McVan of Woodridge was 4th in 79, 6th in 80, 10th in 81 and 7th in 82.

Thanks for the info on CJ. She was a true talent. I still remember here running the streets of Reading between the Mile and 880yd at their Invitational back in '82. I remember being amazed that she could do that and successfully win the 880 doing that.

Stephanie Morgan ran in Michigan her freshman year. She ran sub-18 as a freshman and was 6th in the DI championship. As it is in Ohio, Michigan DI schools are the largest schools. Her team, Clarkston, was the Michigan DI state champs in Stephanie's freshman year. Stephanie's sister, Jenny, was Clarkston's top runner that year. Jenny never competed in Ohio and competed for UMich after graduating from Clarkston. FWIW, Michigan also runs the state championship meet for the LP schools at a race track - the Michigan International Speedway. The UP schools have a separate state meet earlier in the season.

When Stephanie moved to Ohio she attended Barnesville HS - a DIII school. Her sophomore year she was 3rd at the state meet and followed that up by winning in both her junior and senior years. In her 11th grade year she went under 17:30 and crushed the field by more than a minute.

Morgan was just as dominant on the track and won state championships in the 800, 1600, & 3200. She is still the DIII state record holder in the 800 & 1600. She is undoubtedly one of the most dominant female runners in the history of Ohio XC & track.

Including mile conversions Morgan is either #2 in all-divisions Ohio history behind Infeld or #3 behind Infeld and the Granville girl 2-3 years ago. All three are very close in times. The neat part is that Howell is not too far away from these three after her sophomore year. She is one of the better girls ever in Ohio and has a chance to be debated for one of the best before she is done.
