Game Report: River 39 Harvest Prep 34

River 39 Harvest Prep 34
(USING THE ROSTERS FROM MAXPREPS.COM AND HUDL.COM)

Last night in Canal Winchester the visiting Hannibal River pilots came calling on heavy favorite Harvest Prep Warriors and their two division one recruits and when all was said and done, the underdogs would leave with a huge win and the right to advance to round two of the playoffs.

#23 Drew Wagnild would pick up 10-yards on a nice run for River and set the tone for the rest of the drive.
River, who seemed to be a big time running team, would fool the Warriors defense by going to the air and to the delight of their fans the result was a 36-yard completion from #5 Lukas Isaly to #88 Drew Dietz, all the way down to the Warriors 1-yard line. With 8:47 left in the quarter, Isaly would bull his way into the end zone. The point after attempt by #4 Grant Williams was missed, keeping this a 6-0 game.

The Warriors offense would get a completion from #6 Daquan Owens-johnson to #12 Savon Mitchell, that covered 40-yards. Mitchell caught the short pass and then let his legs take him to the big gain, with 8:04 left on the opening period clock.
#23 Daniel Bangura worked his way up the gut of the defense, for a nice 9-yard gain, at the 7:40 mark of the quarter. Just thirty seconds later Bangura would pick up a nice gain and then a mask call on River took the ball all the way down to the River 5-yard-line. From there Johnson scored the tying touchdown. A two-point try failed, leaving this a 6-6 game, with 6:41 left in the quarter.

River would need only two-plays to light up the scoreboard again, when Isaly dropped back to pass and found a wide opened Wagnild for a 67-yard touchdown. The point after kick made this a 13-6 game, with 5:49 left in the high octane opening quarter. I could be way off here, but I think the River coaching staff saw something on film and exploited in at will early in this contest.

#25 Kristoff Greensword of the Warriors would put the ball on the ground, with 5:35 mark of the quarter and the pilots came out the pile with the ball. Making mistakes in a big game, against a team you are favored to beat, is the one thing you cannot do, especially when you are already losing the game.

The pilots would take 7-plays to go 58-yards to score again and hush the home team crowd up, when Isaly sprinted in from 6-yards out. The point after kick made this a 20-6 game, with 3:40 left in the very exciting quarter.

The quarter had just :13 left when Bangura scored from 9-yards out to make this a 20-12 game and then after a successful two-point conversion pass to Mitchell, we had ourselves a 20-14 game.

The quarter ended with a 34-yard completion to Dietz from Isaly. Dietz was as wide opened as any receiver could be as the defense again was fooled by the pilots air attack.

River would run nine straight plays after the big pass play, with the end result being a 5-yard touchdown run by Isaly, with 8:20 left in the quarter. Isaly was the main attraction on this drive as he used his feet several times on the drive to pick up big yards. The point after kick gave River a 27-14 lead.

The clock read 5:13 left in the half, when Isaly appeared to be picked off by Mitchell, who then made a nice return on the would be pick, but a flag was thrown on the play , with the call being roughing the passer on the Warriors. This play really changed the tone of this game and gave River a tremendous break. The pilots went back to the ground game, with 4:53 left in the half using a direct snap to Wagnild, with the result being a 5-yard gain. Then it was back to the air, with a 22-yard completion from Isaly to Wagnild, with 4:23 left. Then it would be a 1-yard plunge by Isaly for another River score. The point after was missed and this stayed a 33-14 game. The drive took 8-plays and totaled 66-yards.

The half ended with River getting two fine plays from their defense.
The first came from #27(NOT ON THE ROSTER) and #50 Kaine Mcleod, who teamed up to stop Johnson for a 2-yard loss, with 2:36. The final play came on a fourth and two play, where the Warriors went for it and was stopped short, when Mcleod got to #25 Kristoff Greensword before he could get going.

With 8:17 left in the third and both defenses having played well it would be River coming up with the nice play on that side of the ball, when Prep quarterback #6 Johnson was put down for a two-yard loss by,Wagnild and #44(NOT ON THE ROSTER). Then at the 7:54 mark #50 Kaine Mcleod, of the pilots got to Bangura for a one-yard loss. There were times in this game you could see the talent and how dangerous Bangura was, but more times than not River, with the line stacked and the linebackers playing up tight, as was the defensive backs, Bangura had little room to get moving.

After shutting the River offense down again in the quarter, it would be the Warriors punt return team that came up huge, when they blocked the River punt, with 4:40 left. The block gave the Warriors the ball on the River 16-yard-line. From there the Warriors needed two-plays to get the score. Bangura, did his best Barry Sanders impression, with a twisting, turning move to go in from five-yards out. A two-point conversion pass was incomplete, leaving this a 33-20 game, with 4:13 left in the quarter.

With 3:49 left in the quarter, the Pilots were back in punt formation and from my point of view, it looked like the punter kicked the ball into his own players back. I could not tell if the ball was tipped or not and neither could anyone sitting around me, that I asked. Either way the Warriors special teams play was huge and it gave the ball to the offense, at the River 26-yard -line.

Bangura, would use another Barry Sanders like spin move and a John Riggens like stiff arm to pick up 25-yards, with 3:40 showing on the clock. After a five-yard penalty on the Warriors, Bangura would take the ball six-yards for the Warriors score. #81 Isaiah Mullens hauled in the two-point conversion pass and all of a sudden this was a 33-28 game, with 2:25 left in the third.

River would start its drive at its own twenty and through five plays they had moved a ball a little against a very aggressive Warrior defense. On the sixth play Isaly let go of a pretty pass that Dietz easily caught, as he was wide opened again , after making the catch he made one guy miss, on a poor attempted tackle and then he raced about 65-yards for the biggest score of the night. A two-point conversion failed, but the Pilots had a 39-28 lead, with :12 seconds left in the third quarter.

River had outplayed the Warriors big-time as the two teams entered the final frame and I believe they knew that they were going to win this game, even with 12:00 minutes left. The Warriors in my opinion did not look like a team who was beaten, but did have that look a fighter gets, when he had been punched upside the head one too many times.

With 7:43 left in the game, and the Warriors moving the ball by using some pass mixed in with the potent ground game, Johnson dropped back to pass, he had used a nice play action play to complete one pass on the drive and tried to do so again, but this time he did not sale the play action allowing Isaly to easily pick off the pass.

With 6:25 left THE LICKING COUNTY FAN PLAYER OF THE GAME LUCAS ISALY bust free for a 35-yard run, giving his troops a gigantic first down. The Warriors defense used a nice play from #15 Jordan Walker, who tackled #23 Wagnild for a six-yard loss.

After getting the ball back to the Warriors used a pass from Johnson to Bangura to get on the scoreboard again, with 1:28 left. A two-point conversion failed again, leaving this a 39-34 game. Not having a kicker was one of many things that did in the Warriors on this night.

A onside kick was recovered by the Pilots and from there they picked up one first down and then let the clock expire as they celebrated their biggest win of the year.
