D2 Match Up Dilemma

If New Albany wins R7, they will almost surely face the R8 with winner (LaSalle or Winton Woods) in the state semi.

The dilemma comes in if Massillon wins R7. Then we have three NEO schools in the state semis. Hoban/Barberton winner of R5, Avon/Olmsted Falls winner of R6, Massillon of R7. I wonder what the OHSAA would do? As far as I know, there is no hard-bracketing of the state semi round. Also, how would they determine the home team?

My guess the Massillon vs New Albany winner will play the Lasalle vs Winton Woods winner in Columbus somewhere if Massillon wins and if New Albany wins it will be in Dayton.

I agree. R7 will almost certainly play R8 no matter the winners.

Wonder if they'd consider money. A Barberton-Massillon or Hoban-Massillon matchup would likely have attendance through the roof. Could they get the same from either Avon or Olmsted Falls?

Sort of feels like 1995, when 3 of the D1 teams were from the Northeast. Would they treat Massillon different from Boardman in that scenario? Avon and Olmsted Falls are both geographically close to Brunswick, who got sent down to play Colerain that year.

It depends what they want. They could have either 1 extremely close game (Massillon against Hoban/Barberton) and 1 extremely far matchup; or 1 decently close matchup and one far, but not as far matchup (Massillon vs R8 winner).

FWIW, Massillon is basically the same in terms of driving time to a hypothetical Columbus site (MAPFRE Stadium) as Olmsted Falls and Avon are. 4 minutes different from OF and 20 from Avon.

Yeah, we(Trotwood) played New Albany a few years back at Piqua in the DII state semifinals. You know the final kick missed by New Albany on like the 5 yard line.

Which really makes you think they'll do a Massillon vs Barberton/Hoban game. Huge crowd and maybe they just put it at Tom Benson to give it a dry run before the finals.

That's what I'm thinking. You could probably get 15-20K at Infocision for that kind of game if the weather is half decent.

LaSalle and OF/Avon would get probably 4-5 K regardless and not much more.

Thatís my thought. They might match the R5 winner and Massillon because you can get maximum fan turnout for both schools AND a ton of local interest from other area fans. You wouldnít have that dynamic with an R6 vs R5 at somewhere like Brunswick.

If New Albany wins R7, of course, there is no NEO dilemma.

R5/R6 I could see being at either Twinsburg or Bedford.

EDIT: according to the release, the matchups will be announced later this week. I wonder if that means before or after Friday night?

I think the OHSAA will try to match up two public schools if possible to save some sort of face. It’s time to separate.

Interesting observation. If Hoban and LaSalle were to advance, matching them up in the semis would put a public school in the title game. I doubt it is a serious factor, and I think it will be R7 vs R8 regardless, but I bet someone would at least bring it up.

As a Massillon fan I don't care - except for travel selfishly. Hoban, WW, LaSalle, and Barberton ALL look off the charts good. Pick your poison. Not to take anything away from Avon or Olmstead Falls either but if I HAD to pick a poison...

That last part is pretty much how I feel about it if Avon can get by Olmsted Falls this Friday. The R5 and R8 winners will both be very strong teams, but if at all possible Iíd prefer the shorter trip...so facing R5 is the preference.

It's guaranteed we'll have a public champ in Divisions 4, 5, and 6, so saving face shouldn't be a factor, but it is the OHSAA so you never know.

Regional Finals breakdown:

Private-Public
D1 2-6
D2 2-6
D3 4-4
D4 0-8
D5 0-8
D6 0-8
D7 2-6

Totals: 10 Private (18%), 46 Public (82%)

And with no matchups between Private schools this week, there is a chance (but doubtful) all Privates could be knocked out.

If Massillon and LaSalle both advance, does the OHSAA set the matchup now of Moore-LaSalle or hope it happens in the final?

If/when Moore moves on I want your coach. At least on the very short list. What a consistently solid winning program. Good luck this week.

That would be Mike Elder who would have been an assistant at Massillon with Hall but that idiot superintendent at the time Lisa Carmichael wouldnít let it happen.

don't much about history. don't know much biology. but leaving a community that is thriving community and a program that is annually competing for at least a regional title. hmmm. Tough to imagine, considering the alternative.

Gonna guess they are doing it so that teams don't have to scout 3 games to see their potential semi-final opponent

Can not remember the year or the teams involved but the OHSAA has set it up if Team A wins they play Region X winner in the State Semi-Finals and if B winners they will be play Region Y in the State Semi-Finals. I believe they will do this in Division 2. If New Albany wins they will play Region 8 Winner and Region 5 Winner will play Region 6 Winner. If Massillon wins they will play Region 5 Winner and Region 6 Winner will play Region 8 Winner.

Regardless, state champ will be determined this week with LaSalle vs. Winton Woods in Southwest Ohio....

State champ 2014 - LaSalle
State champ 2015 - LaSalle
State champ 2016 - LaSalle

LaSalle is a member of the GCL South, which happens to be one of the best football conferences in the USA. Since 2001, all 4 teams (X, Elder, Moeller, LaSalle) have each won a minimum of 2 state titles, all D1 except for the 3 D2 state titles won by LaSalle.

I could see the OHSAA putting the Hoban vs Barberton winner against Massillon if they beat New Albany and Avon vs O Falls against Lasalle vs WW Winner, strictly for the huge gate they would get at Infocision or Tom Benson Tiger Stadium. And play the other semi-Final at Dublin Coffman or a bigger venue in C-bus.
