D VI Region 21 Championship: Kirtland (12-0) vs Rootstown (12-0)

Kirtland has the the track record, but Rootstown has a great team this year. Who wins this?

This should be a great game between two undefeated teams.

Drew Pasteur has Kirtland by 4. Calpreps has Rootstown by 2.
Interestingly the first week of the season, Pasteur's site had Rootstown losing it's opener to Field by 12 points. Field ended up 0-10.

This could be a great one. I love small school games like this one. I think Rootstown may buck tradition and surprise some people here.

Rootstown has proven this year to have a tremendous team. They really caught my eye when they beat Mogadore a couple weeks ago. Because of that I'm leaning toward the Rovers to buck the trend and knock off the Hornet Friday night.

This has to be very exciting for Rootstown. Knocking off Mogadore during the regular season and now making a run in the playoffs. I'm guessing the whole town will be at this game.

Especially since this is Rootstown's first playoff appearance in 13 years too. Has to be a special ride for those in the community

My buddy and I jump around to different state playoff games every week. This past Friday we saw Rootstown and Norwayne play at Green. I was more than impressed with Rootstown. They have 4-5 excellent and I mean excellent skill players, starting with their QB. Every one of those kids could start for a Division 1 school. I think they only have 29 kids or so on their roster, but they are extremely well balance with very quick and fast backs and QB who can zing it. Clearly easy to see why they were 12-0. I went to game thinking they had no chance vs Kirtland. I left thinking they will beat Kirtland. I thought they were that good. The Sibbio kid is all over the field. Unbelievable athlete and he is not very big either. Should be a great game. My buddy lives in Solon and has seen Kirtland this year. Said Kirtland has more depth but Rootstown has better athletes. We will see.

Rootstown definitely has some outstanding athletes. In addition to the players you described above, their RB and LB/TE are 1st Team All State caliber players.

As you mentioned their offense is excellent but their defense has been very stingy. In fact they haven't given up a single point in the 2nd half since September, a span of 6 games.

I guess you never played Kirtland before, we play them every year in our conference. Good Luck!

Very well aware of the Kirtland program. This will be a great game and this was not an indictment of Kirtland by no means.

If Kirtland's defense plays the way they did against Liberty they should win if not it will be a barn burner.

Rootstown passes the ball this year better than Mogadore and Mogadore really racked up the passing yards against Kirtland. Rootstown’s defense is good but not quite as good as Mogadore’s was. Should be a high scoring game.

Can’t stand Rootstown, respect Kirtland...but still will be rooting for Rootstown being from the PTC.

Hoping to see Rootstown play well again this week.

And hopefully the announcer pronounces the name of the school correctly this week. The guy at Green was driving me nuts the whole game.

I found this interesting. Over the last 3 games (week 10-12), the combination of Torok/Neibecker (Kirtland) has rushed for 541 yards and 7 TD's (Neibecker DNP in week 10). Kaut (Rootstown) has rushed for 508 yards and 10 TD's. I'll hang up now and listen to what you have to say

Also over the last 3 weeks, Kirtland has averaged 45.6 ppg offensively and given up 15.6 ppg. Rootstown has averaged 31 ppg and given up only 4 ppg. In comparing the 2 passing games (again, over the last 3 weeks), Kirtland is 13/17 (76%) for 205 yards and 4 TD's. Rootstown is 30/43 (70%) for 376 yards and 4 TD's

If you're wondering why I'm choosing the last 3 weeks it's because I thought it was important to include the head to head match ups against Mogadore. Here's my last stat for awhile. Week 10-12: Rootstown rushing yards, 564 (90% Kaut). Kirtland rushing yards, 1,156 (47% Torok/Neibecker).

Strength of schedule is very similar for both teams although in the last 3 weeks Rootstown's is more difficult. They've played Norwayne (10-2) and Columbiana (7-4) + Mogadore compared to Liberty (8-3) and Hawken (3-7) + Mogadore.

That may skew the statistics a bit.

I think it'll be a great game, looking forward to it. I wasn't trying to predict any outcome with the stats, just like looking at the numbers Here are a few more regular season stats, week 1-10.

Rootstown
Passing - 1,149
Rushing - 2,454
Avg PF - 37.5
Avg PA - 7.6

Kirtland
Passing - 581
Rushing - 3,814
Avg PF - 45.7
Avg PA - 8.8

I think it'll be a great game too. I think Kirtland is a slight favorite which is something that no one would have said at the beginning of the season.

In August this was a David vs Goliath matchup. Since then David's picked up a few more weapons.

Rootstown seens to really be rolling. A 17 point win over Mogadore and then a 29 point win over Norwayne are both extremely impressive performances. I was skeptical on the Rovers up to the Moggy game, then the Norwayne game reinforced they are for real. This should be a dandy. Question though, is this Rootstown team very senior laden or do they return a decent amount to be in contention next year?

Saw the Rovers last weekend. The thing that really impressed me was how quick the were in open field and also how they come up and hit you while on defense. Garman from Norwayne was constantly put on his rear end. This game is one small town fans should go watch. to far for me but I'm pulling for the Rovers. Kirtland the tradition vs Rootstown the one yr wonder. reminds me of Norwayne vs Kenton. Im pulling for the Rovers

Rootstown graduates 8 senior starters plus the kicker and they lose their 2 best players in Caleb Kaut and Nate Moore. However, the junior class was the more heralded class going into high school so there are definitely enough players returning to be in contention again.

Rootstown has had a big fall for its sports progam. The boys soccer team made it to the state quarters, and the girls soccer team lost to Kirtland in the regional semis (round of 16).

This is just like the Hoban-Barberton match up. 2 great teams, 1 that sees the playoffs to end every year, and 1 newcomer. Kirtland's heavy playoff experience makes them the favorite, but I'm hoping Rootstown can buck the odds, and pull the upset.

Like I posted in the Moggy vs. Kirtland thread, Kirtland's achilles heel all year long has been it's pass defense and special teams. Both weaknesses almost came back to bite Kirtland against Moggy. If Rootstown has a good passing game, Kirtland may be in trouble this weekend.

Should be a good game.
