DII Region 7 Championship: Massillon (9-3) vs. New Albany (8-4)

Massillon beats Ashland’s pass offense 28-7 and New Albany knocks off the number 1 seed Walnut Ridge 30-6! Should be a good game! Thoughts and predictions? Site for the game?

Some fun facts about each team and their latest regional appearances:
This is Massillon’s first regional final appearance since 2012 in division 1, where they lost to eventual state finalist Whitmer, 16-49.

New Albany appeared in the regional final last year, losing to eventual state finalist Massillon Perry, 6-17.

Mount Vernon or Mansfield are my guesses. Like Boardman and Ashland, New Albany has a mix of being great at times and awful at others...I still think the Tigers win comfortably.

Massillon goes from playing against the 5 wide spread to the Wing-T. Tough task for the young Tigers.

I love the wing-t, but I think Massillon will know what to do to stop it. Interesting that so many on here were saying after the Mentor game that the Tigers would be lucky to win four games and here they are in the regional championship.

I love any offense that uses confusion to move the ball. The wing-t got Fitch a lot of wins against teams that had much better talent than we had. The key for Massillon will be having the linebackers not bite on the counters. In '90 when Fitch played Iggy, they were chasing the wrong players the whole game. The next time we faced them, Iggy's backers just stayed at home and waited. That will be the key for the Tigers.

New Albany is strange. They have some good athletes are well coached and play a good schedule. They have beaten some good teams and then you look and they have a couple head scratchers of losses. Maybe just depends which team shows up.

I think this time of year any game between two public schools is a toss up. Go Tigers!

I can only go by what I saw last year in the regional title game against my Panthers. They had decent size, were a tough physical team, had some good skill, tough running backs, but lacked an accurate thrower. I thought if they had a better passing QB, it might have been an even tougher game.

Agreed. If a team is still standing at this point, they have to be good and capable of beating their opponent...

Looks like Arlin Field in Mansfield is the confirmed spot the game!

Big Ed...that description of New Albany is correct. They have been a consistent team year in and year out, a well coached team that is in the playoffs yearly...they would be a team that can compete in the Fed. How about you...get to watch a game in Dalton and then two games at Hoover!

I certainly would have never guessed that New Albany would be in a regional final, so congrats to their coaches on a really good coaching job in the playoffs. I'm pretty impressed with how they manhandled Walnut Ridge.

Playing Massillon at Arlin Field is going to be a tall order, but the Eagles do have good playoff experience, and they seem to be peaking at the right time. Should be a dandy of a game.

I wish I could be there, because this is going to be a good game, and Arlin is a fantastic venue, IMO. I saw the Ignatius/Olentangy Liberty DI state semifinal at Arlin last year, and you can feel the history there. It's awesome.

The Tigers are a very balanced team running and throwing and have played really good defense the last few weeks. Don't forget Massillon's D coord has faced the wing T vs Perry the last few years while the D-cord at Jackson. Nobody runs the it better than Perry and I think looking at the size advantage Massillon has upfront favors the Tigers. Good Luck to Stark County's last team alive.

Here we go with someone bringing up winning title of field. Seriously, right now Tigers fans are just enjoying this ride. They only have 4 senior starters on offense and 3-4 on defense. All the key subs are also sophs and juniors. This team is just getting better week after week. After this week, comes extremely tough teams... so probably not, let Massillon fans just enjoy the ride before bringing up that junk. Win this week first and see how plays out. So many sophs getting varsity playoff experience and Moore dressing some freshmen for the ride. The extra weeks of practices and playoff games are invaluable for the future

Wing T has given Massillon trouble in the past. It is supposed to be warmer than last week but it is supposed to be rainy. I think this game should be closer than last weeks game vs Ashland.

The thing about a Wing T offense is if they get down 2+ scores games many times can get ugly.

Massillon 24
New Albany 13

If I were a betting man I would pick Barberton over Hoban. If McKinley and Perry played Iggy and ED's tough I bet the Tigers can hang around a while against LaSalle.

Go Tigers! Great story... seemed like people were ready to throw in the towel after the Mentor game, but the Tigers have peaked at the right time. Great to have a kid like Longwell back there to learn about the big games as a Soph. That’s huge.

New Albany’s luck ran out this same week last year so they will not want to repeat that same outcome this year. They will come to play.

I’ll use the same example as last week against Ashland.
This will be the toughest team New Albany has faced and they will not be the toughest team the Tigers have faced, just the next opponent.
The running game is why the Tigers are in the regional championship, over the last 3 games they have averaged
51 att
192 yds
3.8 per att.
If that continues that will keep them in every game and combined with the passing attack makes them a threat to make it to the title game.
But of course we will be “running clocked” in the semi final. LMAO !!!
