This has been a strange thread to say the least. Benedictine had a solid season in a solid league. The playoff loss was to what could be the best public school that's not in division one.

In the head coaches first season last year they struggled. Oh well, it happens. From the outside looking in it seems like there is plenty of talent at BHS and the program is trending right back up. Could it be that all of this bickering goes a bit deeper then football? Old guard vs. new guard issues? generational disconnect?

Great Job this season!
Bengals. It's time to get back to the den, heal your wounds, come out fired up for next season. There is a lot of good stuff to build on. Get in the weight room, run some hills, build up your strength for the 2018 campaign.

Word is that Bengals will be playing Shaker Heights next year week 2. Great pick up if true as they are literally right down the street, Buckeye/South Woodland, and could be a nice rivalry game

We should start a thread about the future of the Benedictine football program without airing a lot of negative issues. The Alumni I hang with each week care more about BHS football than anything done by the Tribe, Browns, Cavs, Monsters, and Ohio State. Unfortunately, only the most wealthy Alumni contributors have any voice in how the football program is run, and it is often a small voice indeed.

Our rich tradition of great players and Men of Benedictine is being eroded by head coaches that stop for a short while to build their resumes and care little about long term success. I'm sure a lot of it can be traced back to how difficult it can be to deal with our strict, ultra-conservative clergy, and administration.

However, if the administration would re-establish the Football Action Team, and they were successful in having a fund drive to convince only 200 Alumni to commit $500 each year, our program would have $100k to pay a head coach a decent salary, and still have maybe $30k left for some financial assistance program. The campus looks great.

For now, we have to give coach Welo a few years to develop his program. The cupboard was bare when he arrived. I wish the previous staff would have stayed as they were excellent coaches, but few of them enjoyed the rigors of recruiting. We do have a nice freshman class, but as usual, only time will tell how many will be diligent enough to achieve in the classroom and in the weight room.

Last, Art Bortnick truly loved Benedictine. It was his dream to win 10 State Titles in a 15-year period. All he asked for was 15 potential stud freshmen each year to perpetuate the program. He was tough, a legend in the weight room, and a strong leader for our program. We have to ask ourselves what it was that wore him down to where he no longer wanted to be on our sidelines.

Go Bengals!

The principal, president and AD at the time ran him out. Really screwed over someone who would have been loyal to Bene until his dying day in every way.

That's true. But with some real cash in the till, my dream coach for a 10-year stretch would be "Tiger" Laverde. Of course, he has it too good at Kirtland to ever leave, but such a coach might put us back on the map where we're competing for players that both Iggy and Eds covet.

Go Bengals!

LaVerde has already declined D1 and D2 offers for more money, but there is one major reason why he's not likely to leave Kirtland for the next 10 years or so: His two boys love football and have the best chance of playing and thriving at a D6 school like Kirtland versus if Tiger were to move his family into a D1 or D2 community. Many of Kirtland's best players probably wouldn't start at neighboring D1 Mentor, and LaVerde has said so. LaVerde is a family man first and foremost, and nothing would thrill him more than to coach his own boys one day.
