Avon (12-0) vs O Falls (11-1) R6 Final

A rematch between two solid programs from the SWC. Avon won in week 2 31-7. Who wins this and why? Possible game locations?

Avon has unusually good depth for a high school program in this day and age, but even that depth is being tested as star players are going down seemingly every game now. That has to help bridge that 31-7 gap for Falls from Avon’s Week 2 win, as does Falls season long improvement, so I’m expecting a much closer game this time. What Falls did to Wadsworth was impressive! I still go with Avon in this one, but it should be a much tighter game than their regular season meeting.

North Ridgeville’s new stadium should be more than adequate for this all SWC regional final. The stadium just hosted a playoff game last night, so they are now used to the routine. Wherever the game is played, props to Ridgeville on the new school and stadium. Very nice!

The OHSAA couldn’t have been more accommodating to the teams and fans for this one. North Ridgeville’s stadium is 7 miles from Avon HS and 5 miles from Olmsted Falls HS. Hopefully the rain stays away and we get a capacity crowd for this one.

A familiar opponent Avon will be well aware of the chop blocks. Wads lost two guys due to this blocking. Officials were warned prior to the game and still allowed it to happen. Canít wait to watch this game

I would agree with cjb56, I have seen OF the last few years and never noticed or heard the players/coaches from North Ridgeville complaining.

Rumor is the two players tore their ACL's as a result of the blocks in question?

I was the game and saw both plays where the players went down and couldn't tell for sure if they Chop Blocks or not.
I will however say that from my experience and from hearing the comments in the crowd that most fans don't know the difference between an illegal Chop Block and a legal Cut Block.
Olmsted Falls runs the triple option so the cut block is part of their game plan.

Falls has zero reputation for illegal chop blocks, and its staff is held in high respect amongst fellow SWC coaches. And CJB56 should be in tune enough to the Avon side of things to verify this about an annual rival.

Post some videoS, lest this just be chalked up to sour grapes.

I myself have been to all but one Avon OF game the last few years and have never heard of or seen any of this. OF is a very respected opponent.

Since the SWC fans don’t seem to feel there is anything to the Falls playing dirty theme, it’s time to focus on the game. The teams obviously know each other well, and quite honestly I wish the SWC teams were divided into R5 and R6 to avoid these rematch playoff games, so I expect a much tighter game than we saw in Week 2. I’ll go with Avon 28-21, but in the playoffs any win is a great win, so even a one point 6 OT win would be fine with me.

They chop block every game. Part of their Offense and the Wadsworth coaches and players should of been prepared for it.

Been watching them since they installed this offense and they do it legally. The SWC Coaches are very aware and the Falls Head Coach and staff are very well respected throughout the league.

Really??? OHSAA in their infinite wisdom needs to change that rule yesterday. Chop blocks and/or cut blocks should be illegal!

I realize that but either way. OL lunging below the waist - period. Whether engaged or not or etc etc. Players' health and futures at stake, c'mon.

I assumed you realized that. I wasn't correcting you. I was simply adding my comments as an emphasis that they are different...one being illegal and one being permitted in a defined area.

For clarification, Blocking below the waist is not a chop block. Blocking below the waist is legal when inside the free blocking zone and both player, offense and defense start on the line of scrimmage. O Falls blocks this way on almost every running play.

A chop block is when a defensive player is engaged above waist and an other offensive blocker engages below the waist. Or vice versa. These are illegal!!

Purposely or not, O Falls chops blocks almost every time they double team block on the line of scrimmage. Center engages above the waist, Rt or LT guards block below the waist. This type of block occurred 4 times in the Wadsworth / O Falls game and was only penalized 1X. ( 2 injured players) This is why Chop blocking is illegal!! I will post film to prove my point when I figure out how.. LOL

The cut block is a valid way to block in some instances. When coached and used correctly, it's a great tool for a linemen.

Players and coaches that know they have to go against it need to practice taking them on. Coaches rolling bags at legs or throwing bags at legs will teach the kids.

Why it's a valid way to block.
- Cut's down some players in pursuit
- Can lower a linemen for easy vision for a QB on certain routes, etc...
- Is a like a change up in baseball. Will slow a linemen down and make them think about coming full force straight ahead.

They could allow it like they do in college and pros where cut blocking is legal in the open field.

You are correct. I typed in haste and didn't clear up the terminology.

Just pause the clip and take a screen shot. That could show enough. Maybe in sequence?

No doubt. When I played guard my favorite block was a sweeping forearm under the facemask to the chin. Used sparingly but very effective.

Thanks to all for the explanations on cut vs. chop etc. I hope it gets brought up this offseason.

Dirty and intentional. Not even sure how you can defend a "legal block" that blows a kid's knee out.

How many more do you need. Poor Nose Tackle from Avon Lake was choped at-least 5-6 times.

Very good post and pictures. I will tip my hat to you. I would hope some of those were called. I know coaches yell about holding a lot when Fall's in on offense, but this is some very good evidence of some dirty play.

I guess you haven't been watching close enough based on the facts that have been presented. Pretty crappy they took Wadsworth's star nose tackle out of the game on the 3rd play using this dirty tactic. Player should have been ejected just as they are for targeting. Clear intent to injure. OF coaches should be ashamed of themselves.

The team I follow closely has played them 6 times in the last three years (Midview). Not one injury to any linemen in those games. Much complaints on holding, but not one injury. Not really sure why the Wadsworth kids got injured and the Midview kids have all stayed healthy.

I looked through the OHSAA website and didn't see anything in regards to fans whining about a loss and getting their loss overturned, so it looks like it's still Avon vs OF on Friday.
