Portsmouth jumped to an early lead Tuesday night vs. Rock Hill at PHS, were never threatened by the Redmen, and coasted to a 55-37 win. The Trojans, 12-6 overall and 7-5 in the OVC, also secured their 12th win, which is the 66th time a Portsmouth team has won at least that many games in a season. Reese Johnson led PHS with 16 points, while Matthew Fraulini pitched in 11.

Portsmouth will host Gallia Academy on Friday night. The Blue Devils gave Fairland its biggest scare of the OVC season with a 60-59 loss. GAHS trounced the Trojans 76-50 a couple of weeks ago, and have only 3 losses on the season. PHS will have to play much better defensively this time around.

Gallia Academy defeated Portsmouth 71-68 in 2 OT last night at PHS. 7 foot sophomore Zach Loveday had 32 points for GAHS, while DJ Eley and Matthew Fraulini had 29 and 21 points respectively for the Trojans. The game went back and forth throughout, with both teams exchanging leads. At the end of regulation, the score was 60-60 after Loveday nailed a 3 pointer from the top of the key.

Portsmouth showed last night that if they can play at this level, they can make the regionals in Athens. They won't have to face a more dominant low post player in the tourney than Loveday, and the Trojan guards can matchup with anyone. Eley and Fraulini shot the 3 ball as a twosome better than they have all year.

VERY PROUD of the Trojans' effort last night. Portsmouth is 12-7 on the season, and 7-6 in OVC play. Gallia Academy has lost only 3 games total, all in OVC play.

Portsmouth jumped to an early 14-6 vs. Albany Alexander on Saturday at the Beast of the Southeast at Chesapeake, then coasted to a 53-39 win over the Spartans. The Trojans increased their lead to 40-23 at the end of 3 quarters. Reese Johnson led PHS with 20 points, while Matthew Fraulini scored 17. In the last 3 games, Portsmouth has hit 25 three pointers. The Trojans upped their record to 13-7, and have South Webster and Ironton for home games this week. If PHS can win these two, it will be the 45th time in school history that a Trojan team has won at least 15 games in a season.

Portsmouth received a #3 seed at the D3 sectional at Waverly HS. They will play Huntington Ross, and if they win, will play the winner of Lynchburg Clay and Adena. The Trojans have won a SE district best 64 sectional titles.

Portsmouth trailied South Webster at halftime 27-26, but in the the second half Coach Eugene Collins employed a more aggressive defense which led to the Trojans taking control of the game in the 3rd quarter, ending with a 51-46 lead after that 3rd frame. In the final 8 minutes, Portsmouth continued to build the lead and had as much as a 70-52 advantage, when SW hit a 3 at the buzzer to make the final 70-55 in favor of PHS. For the 8th time this season, Matthew Fraulini led the Trojans in scoring, this time with 20 points, which included six 3 pointers. In the last 4 games, Portsmouth has knocked down almost 35 trifectas.

The Trojans improved to 14-7 on the season and will host Ironton on Friday which will be the last game of the regular season. With a win, Portsmouth will post a 15 win season for the 45th time in school history. It will also be the 3rd straight season that Portsmouth will have recorded a 15-7 mark going into the tournament.

Portsmouth jumped to an early 11-3 lead against Ironton, led at every quarter stop, and came away with a 71-56 regular season finale win vs. the Fighting Tigers. The Trojans turned up the pressure against IHS in the second half, and in the end they committed 25 turnovers. Matthew Fraulini led PHS with 18 points, while Daniel Jordan added 17. It was the 9th time that sophomore Fraulini led Portsmouth in scoring. Every starter led Portsmouth in scoring in at least 1 game.

Portsmouth finished the regular season with its third straight 15-7 mark. It was the 45th time in school history that a Trojan boys basketball team has won at least 15 games in a season. It was also PHS's 80th winning season, dating back to 1913.

Portsmouth's all time mark stands at 1,449--767, while in this decade (2010-present), the Trojans are 154-63. PHS is 92-66 vs. Ironton all time. Portsmouth's OVC finish this season was 8-6, good for 4th place in a very strong year in the conference.

Portsmouth opened up tournament play with a convincing 69-46 win over Huntington Ross. The Trojans jumped ahead early, led by 21 early in the 3rd quarter before the Huntsmen cut the lead to 10 points with several consecutive 3 pointers. PHS then regained a comfortable advantage by the end of the quarter, and HR never threatened the Trojans again. Daniel Jordan led Portsmouth with 24 points, his 3rd game this year of scoring at least 24 points. He also had double digit rebounds.

Portsmouth advances to play Lynchburg Clay (14-8), which defeated Frankfort Adena in the second game of the night 78-68. The Mustangs are led by 6-5 Eric McLaughlin, who was a starter on the LC Final 4 team of 2016.

A win by the Trojans will give them the 65th sectional title in school history.

Portsmouth's season came to an end Saturday night at Waverly HS, as the Lynchburg Clay Mustangs defeated the Trojans 47-42. Eric McLaughlin led LC with 23 points, and he made several clutch baskets in the 4th quarter. Reese Johnson led PHS with 15 points in his final game wearing the Red and Blue. Portsmouth pulled to within 44-42 with just under a minute to play, but a turnover proved costly, and the Mustangs held on to win the sectional championship.

Portsmouth graduates 4 starters, and the first sub off the bench. Matthew Fraulini, who will be junior, and was the leading scorer for the Trojans this season, returns. The two other notable subs, Daniel Lattimore and MyQuel McKinley, both return. However, the Trojan JV team went 1-21, so the 2018-2019 season looks right now to be one where wins will be hard to come by. The freshmen and 8th grade teams have some nice talent, and will probably be moved up faster than usual.

Coach Eugene Collins' overall record stands at 155-64 after 9 years. He is currently the 3rd winningest coach in PHS history, behind only Red Hopkins (168-58) and George Heller (224-137). Portsmouth's all time record now stands at 1,450--768.

Looking forward to the 2018-2019 season already!! This summer should be very interesting with some important decisions that will have to be made. GO TROJANS!!

Portsmouth's roster for next season got a big boost with the transfer of Miles Shipp, who will be a sophomore in 2018-2019. The 6-3 Shipp comes from Portsmouth Notre Dame where he started as a freshman for the Titans. He should be an immediate starter for a Trojan team that lost 4 starters from last season. His combination of athleticism and physicality will fit in nicely for PHS. He will be looked upon to score, helping out last year's leading scorer Matthew Fraulini, who returns for his junior year.

With the new enrollment figures being released by the OHSAA, Portsmouth will remain a D3 school for the 2018-2019 season. Next year's enrollment number for PHS is 171.

I recently completed a writeup on every one of Portsmouth's 37 district championship teams on www.trojanhoops.org. Included are game scores, rosters, individual accomplishments, and tournament outcomes. The 37 district titles are the most of any SE district school, with Wheelersburg coming in second with 19.
